The Garífuna Cultural Center in Punta Gorda was one of the highlights of our trip to Roatan. Audrey and her family were so welcoming and taught us so much about Garífuna culture. I highly recommend this experience!

Beautiful people, location, and history

We really enjoyed learning about the history and experiences of the Garifuna people. When I return, I would like to visit on a day when they offer the immersive experience, to enjoy the dancing and also to take a drumming lesson. I felt like my time in Punta Gorda and at the center was too short! Thank you so much to the wonderful women for sharing their culture and wisdom with us, and for the important work of learning their history so it can continue to be shared with the future. Also, the food was amazing!! As a side note, there is an Airbnb available that is right next to the cultural center and on the water! We stayed there for a night, and it was the perfect location to enjoy the cultural center and walk down the street to experience the Sunday drumming at a local hang out.

Visit the Garifuna Cultural Center - you'll be glad you did!

My friend and I visited the Cultural Center last week while on a dive trip to Roatan and were so glad we did! The two Garifuna ladies who presented the information were excellent and we learned so much about the cultural. Very, very interesting.

These women and trying to educate all of us about their people and their history and I greatly admire them for this.

Most enjoyable!

Sorry this review is coming late. I have been traveling Central America and let me tell you this tour was one of my Honduras highlights. I mean this is a top 3 thing to do while visiting Roatan! EVERYTHING WAS A HIGHLIGHT!!! Audrey is so dope and very welcoming and really everyone who works here including Audrey’s husband. I am so happy about the work they are doing here to preserve and educate about the Garifuna Culture. I learned so much during my time here, for what you pay you get so much out and it’s soooo worth it. I’ll take a refill of Gifiti please!!

A trip to Roatan is not complete without a stop at the Garifuna Cultural Center. We learned about the determination of the Garifuna people, some of their language and their foods. We had a delicious meal there. I highly recommend a visit to the Garifuna Cultural Center! I learned a LOT! And enjoyed the meal!

Beyond a doubt our favorite experience during our two week stay on Roatan. A special thank you to Audrey, the director, for sharing her knowledge of her people’s history and culture. We enjoyed using the traditional tools for food preparation, (mortar and pestle, grater made with crystals, clay oven ……) What a joy to have a meal made with sustainable food. What a joy to share space in such a loving environment.

A history worth knowing. A people worth befriending.

This place is magical.
On stilts in the ocean, the Garifuna Cultural centre hosts lunches of the most delicious food; couple with a history lesson in this profoundly resilient people.

Two hours with Audrey Flores and her crew of talented musicians snd dancers were two of the best spent during outgrow weeks on island.

The story goes back to Africa, with the Garifuna people spring from intermarriage with the indigenous peoples of St Vincent (also one of our favourite places), who after siding with the French were cast out to the bay Islands by the English. These are a proud people. Never enslaved. These are a powerful people.

If you are visiting the island, I heartily recommend a visit. Come for the food, be touched by their story.

If you are an expat in the island, bring your guests. Sure, there is loads to see on a Roatan. This is not to be missed.

My favorite part was the literal taste of the Garifuna culture with the food and getting to dance with the drums. We were also happy to purchase shirts to take home with us.
And the mangrove tour was a great experience with an amazing boat ride and views.
