Amazing church with a variety of architectural styles. Lots of history and very much part of the community. The area around the church is the more interesting part of town.

All'interno di questa bella e grande chiesa, grande in proporzione alla dimensione della cittadina in cui si trova, ci sono dei pannelli che ricordano la vita e le opere del suo più illustre cittadino, il poeta Samuel Coleridge, nato qui nel diciottesimo secolo. Nel prato antistante c'è una statua a lui dedicata che potrebbe passare inosservata. La chiesa si trova sopra una collinetta ed è circondata da tombe sparpagliate in un prato verde. Oggi c'era un viavai di persone che portavano dentro la chiesa degli abeti, probabilmente in vista del Natale.

We’d tried to visit St Mary’s on other occasions in recent years but had, not surprisingly, failed because of COVID restrictions. We were therefore very pleased to be able to visit this time. It is indeed a stunning church with a range of fascinating features, quite apart from the Coleridge connection. Our enjoyment was, however, compromised by the hubbub of a local church coffee tasting that shattered any hope of quiet contemplation. I appreciate that a church is a living thing, not a monument, but St Mary’s still open to visitors for very long each day. Perhaps a little attention should be paid to noise levels when visitors might like to appreciate a wonderful church not rowdy meeting.

Simon Jenkin's give this church 5 stars so I was so looking forward to seeing it. I have a passion for vising churches and I was a little disappointed in its overall appearance as there seemed to be paraphernalia everywhere which is really distracting. I have no problems with screens if people need them but they were not in use so why not take them down until they are? The picture of the monument to John Coke has the screen in the right-hand corner. I was also disappointed to see cushions strewn across the recumbent figure of Jane Fortescue in the magnificent Butterfield transept. Perhaps I visited on a bad day but it feels like no one has an eye on the detail of the church and it should be presented with its best bib and tucker to reflect the true gem it is. I liked a lot about this church though: the beautiful fan vaulting in the Dorset aisle, the solar clock, the Lady Chapel, the extraordinary medieval bosses – also loved the quirky ones with the gaping mouths in the north transept. Seemed so incongruous in such a setting but once I realised what they are it all made sense. I won't spoil it by saying :-D

Beautiful church well worth a visit. History is wonderful and worth studying. The stain glass windows are stunning.

Situated just outside the town centre, just passed the library, unusual looking church with 2 square towers, fascinating inside, we used the v detailed guide (£3) which was excellent for both inside and outside of the church.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would strongly recommend visiting here if you are in the area.

Living in Ottery St Mary I have often walked around the church both with friends and my 6 year old Granddaughter. It is a peaceful Haven in the middle of Ottery and worth a visit.

A very welcoming group of people at the Church - we waited for the Service to finish and then went to find the clock. A Clergyman gave us a potted history of the Clock and left us to wonder at it.
