We did not have a guide for this tour. We are a fit family of 4, our kids are 20 and 22 years old and we absolutely loved exploring these rocks! I read other reviews where people were scared and sore for weeks - I will say that athleticism comes in handy here. We chose to venture up rocks and squeeze through crevices and each turn and scramble over rocks lead to another beautiful view. For us, the more we could climb and see, the better. I imagine that you can probably get through much of the furnace without having to do a lot of that? I say that with the understanding that you're exploring on your own - I don't know what a guided tour would offer. The vide you watch prior to going is important, as it helped us be mindful of where we were stepping and the importance of preserving the vegetation. We had time to leave the furnace and head to the delicate arch, but we were enjoying ourselves so much that we opted to maximize our time in the fiery furnace. Another note is that the tall rocks offer plenty of shade. So if it's a clear summer day, you will definitely avoid some of the intense sun on this excursion. Highly recommend!!

We were fortunate to get a spot on the NPS Ranger Guided tour of the Fiery Furnace. It was absolutely worth the effort of waiting on line. The tour was fantastic and our guide was first rate.

Getting tickets is definitely tricky. We were not able to get a Ranger guided tour. We ended up being able to get self guided tour tickets. I was a little nervous about getting lost. My husband seemed more confident. We did listen to people on TripAdvisor saying to go counterclockwise. We found that to be a bit confusing. Our suggestion is when you go into the parking lot, take the entrance to the trail at the part of the lot that is not next to the bathrooms.entrance , take the entrance to the trail at the part of the lot that is not next to the bathrooms. Once you start down the trail, just follow the arrows.
We did take a wrong turn because we thought we needed to go counterclockwise to the arrows. That’s not what those directions mean. Just follow the arrows no matter what.
That being said, the arrows are very difficult to find until you get the hang of it. They will lead you in the right direction, but there are not many and really tricky to see.
We did have a couple times that we were unsure. We were the right place. We did turn around a couple times. Overall, we had a good time and we were done in well
under two hours.
If you can get the tickets do it. Don’t worry about not having the guide, although that would certainly alleviate anxiety for people.

We were fortunate enough to get tickets to the ranger-guided tour after three misses for our last day in the park. It was well worth the effort! Great scenery and a really fun hike. Paris did a great job leading our group, offering informative commentary on the scenery and fauna as well as useful guidance for the sometimes-challenging terrain. We were definitely glad to do the guided tour so as not to get lost, consistent with most of the commentary we’d seen ahead of time. We got some slightly confusing advice from the ranger at the visitor center when we picked up our tickets who suggested that if we weren’t comfortable with the moderate level of difficulty that we should do it on our own. (I think probably just not doing it at all would be the more prudent course under those circumstances - but they seem mainly and understandably concerned about getting anyone who might spoil it for everyone off the group hike).

My husband and I did the self-guiding hike. We downloaded the map from the AllTrails app which worked about 85% of the time. We picked up our permit and watched the short film the day before and set out around 8:30 the next morning. We went counterclockwise as this is the best way to spot the arrows. The trail starts from the parking lot close to the viewpoint on a sandy trail and quickly descends into a scramble to the bottom. This is where you see the most arrows. When you’re finally at the bottom, the real fun starts. We managed to find skull arch with not a lot of difficulty and headed back to the main trail. I’d say you’re scrambling 80% of the time. You must be sure-footed and like an adventure. There’s some exposure and tight squeezes through the sandstone fins. It’s a lot of fun. If you go with an open mind, you’ll have fun too. We finished in just under 3 hours.

I did the self-guided hike with 3 kids (age 10,11,13) on a weekend afternoon and had a great time. We went counterclockwise and did the spur to Surprise Arch (but not skull arch spur). It took us around 3 hours, at a slightly relaxed pace with a few stops. We only saw one other party (and briefly heard sounds of another). Depending on their rock scrambling confidence, I wouldn't take kids much younger on this (at one spot, I would have had to carry my particularly small 7 yr old daughter on my back, if she'd been with us). Though the park ranger at orientation asked that visitors not use the "All Trails app" (just because its not 'authorized'), I did utilize another similar app, CalTopo. It proved a very important for navigating our trip (in fact, I would only go in without it if I was planning for just do out/back and retrace my steps, or I planned for a significantly longer trip with much more trial/error pathfinding).

We are avid hikers and this was one of the most amazing hikes we have ever done. I was fortunate to have read sone great tips online which made the experience for us, and I’m passing on the favour here. We hiked in October when there were no ranger-led tours available - these tips are for the self-guided hike:
1. Buying Fiery Furnace permits: only 75 permits are issued per day, 7 days in advance, at 8am MT. I was online ahead of 8am two days in a row and missed them both times. However I noticed that the system gives 15 minutes to complete a purchase and some groups likely have multiple people trying to buy the tickets at once, to increase their chances. Sure enough, I was able to buy permits at exactly 8:15am MT.
2. Download a GPS map. I downloaded the “Fiery Furnace and Surprise Arch” map from AllTrails onto my iPhone. Obviously you have to do this before entering the park as cell service is spotty at best. This map was incredibly accurate and we did not get lost, though we did wander off and had to course-correct quite frequently. The map followed the ranger-led trail.
3. Do not count on the ranger trail arrows to guide you. Rather, use your GPS and then use the arrows as confirmation. The arrows are tiny, far apart, blend into the rocks, and are often very difficult to spot (see if u can spot them in my pics, then imagine trying to spot this from 50 feet away)
4. The signs that say “Dead End Ahead” really mean “something absolutely spectacular ahead”. Don’t miss these! Examples are Skull Arch and Surprise Arch (see pics).
5. Don’t go late in the afternoon. It would be a nightmare to have to navigate your way out in the dark if you got lost. We entered the park at 8:20am and hit the trail around 9am (it’s a 14 mile/25 min drive from the entrance). There were a few people about but mostly we enjoyed solitude. While the passes are for 8am, you can go as early as you want. Plus, the lineups to get into the park in the early afternoon were 1/2 hour long, whereas it was very quick in the morning.
6. Allocate enough time. It took us 2 hours to hike the ranger trail. We were on a timeline - we could easily have spent another few hours exploring off-trail. Not to mention we were lucky not to get lost.
7. Wear hiking boots. You will be climbing over rocks and will need the grip.

If you enjoy getting lost, this is the trail for you. I had researched this trail and knew it was easy to get lost, so I downloaded a guide. The guide was great, but we still got lost. I am not sure why the park does not put up better trail markers. It seems they want people to get lost and frustrated. It was pretty down there, but not worth the frustration of constantly having to retrace your steps and try to figure out where the heck you were. There were also some physical aspects of climbing and maneuvering through the rocks that we just did not feel safe doing. We did not make it all the way around and ended up turning around and going back the way we came in. We wasted a good portion of our day getting the permit, watching the movie and getting the talk, and then getting lost. I'm not sure where all of the positive reviews come from. Everyone we encountered was lost and trying to find their way. Not a fun way to spend your time.

We were able to secure a Ranger led hike through the Fiery Furnace. If you go by yourself there is a National Park process that will need to be followed with a wilderness pass. We met our Ranger and he provided education about the area, biology, nature and led us on a challenging path. We saw several types of arches, water tank where animals drink and even microscopic organisms survive.
The hike is 2 1/2 hours and approximately 2 miles. There is a lot of rock scrambling up and down as we hiked. We had to balance a leg on 1 rock and the other leg was on anther rock with a ledge below us, not for the faint of heart. Some spots required us to jump from 1 ledge to the next, plus the ranger had to tell us where to place our feet on some rocks as we climbed. It was fun and we didn't travel fast since some people in our group were a bit nervous, but everyone made the hike to the end.
If you sign up for the ranger tour, make sure you follow the instructions to be on time in the parking lot. We were at the visitor center when we overheard a family of 3 complaining that they missed their tour by 10 minutes.

I booked the fiery furnace tour online for August 16 and they just canceled it. I’m guessing Covid related. Anyone know if I can still hike it on my own? Or is the trail closed?

How did you get a permit months ahead? The NPS website says they only give permits out 7 days in advance and only in person.

Où peut-on prendre un guide? Est-ce que on doit le faire sur un site web et réserver d’avance ou on peut payer au Visitor Center?
เขียนเมื่อ 8 สิงหาคม 2019
It shouldn't be. You might have to help them along a bit, but an 8 year old should be able to do it.
เขียนเมื่อ 10 กันยายน 2019
Can you get permits online for the individual hike, or can those only be bought in person at the Visitor Center?
เขียนเมื่อ 18 มิถุนายน 2019
You can buy the ranger-led hikes on-line. I bought ours months in advance. I believe permits for "individual hikes" are only available 7 days prior to the day you want to hike and you can only get them in person or calling the visitor center. I'm sure about the first part, not 100% about the 2nd part. I'd recommend calling the visitor center prior to this 7-day period to verify with them.
Regardless, don't wait until the day you get there to request a permit! A guy in line in front of us said he drove from Montana to hike Fiery Furnace that day and they were out of permits so he didn't get one. He yelled at the ranger because he didn't read the rules before he left!
เขียนเมื่อ 8 กรกฎาคม 2019
The only days we'll be there are April 24 or 25. How likely are we to be able to get a permit that day, since it is Easter week? The ranger-led hikes are already sold out.
เขียนเมื่อ 15 มีนาคม 2019
Show up there early to get one. It all depends on how many people show up before you do, but there was no mad rush either. We were disappointed to miss the ranger-led hikes, but it turned out to be a blessing for us. We did it at our own pace and kids had loads of fun

Why do you have to get a "coveted" pass to tour Fiery Furnace? It's part of the National Park, right?
Thanks!

It is like a maze and you can get lost. Some places are narrow and steep. They show you a video to make you aware of these conditions. They also only let certain number of people into the area to keep it protected.

Hi,
We'll be doing the Fiery Furnace hike mid July 2019, we booked online for the 9:30 ranger-led hike.
I see that we have to get the tickets one hour in advance, but the hike is at 9:30 and Arches NPS site says visitor center opens 9am-4pm.. The day before, we will be coming all the way from Jackson, WY, not sure at all we can make it to Arches Visitor Center by 4pm !
Question : is showing up to the Visitor Center at 9am for 9:30am hike ok ?
Or does the visitor center have larger opening hours during the summer ?
Thanks for the info
เขียนเมื่อ 21 มกราคม 2019
Hi, the visitor center will be open at 7:30 in the middle of the summer! you won't have to watch a video if you're going with a park ranger.
เขียนเมื่อ 24 มกราคม 2019
So sorry, I just saw this. On the website it says they are available through September 28th. You have to reserve them in person and they do fill up. Have fun!
เขียนเมื่อ 26 มีนาคม 2019
I may not be able to purchase the morning ranger hike ticket in advance online. Does anyone know what time(s) the afternoon hikes are? I do know they can only be purchased 7 days in advance in person. Thanks!

I would call the Arches visitor center to ask for more information about off season hikes.
