Best Badland Experience, Signature NPS Hike MUST DO
ต.ค. ค.ศ. 2021
This was the most fun activity we did in Badlands. The hike is both beautiful and challenging, and most importantly, the view at the end is simply incredible. It has everything you came to see at Badlands NP. There are some challenging spots both the ladder climb and the canyon edge but do not let these deter you. Please note this is a signature hike in the NPS system for the ladder which is a woodrail ladder that begins gradual as simple steps before ending vertical like a ladder. Truly it is not that bad, easier going up than down. You then walk on the canyon ledge that adds some additional excitement to this hike.

While this is a fun diversion along the hike, the more impressive part is simply hiking in the valley of these tremendous badland peaks and features before reaching an incredible "Notch" in the wall where you have an amazing view of the valley below. Both the end view and the unique trail make this a MUST DO and simply the best part of Badlands. While it can be crowded with a pinch point at the ladder, we had the entire hike nearly to ourselves. For crowd control, I would start on the east side first and visit this hike early in the morning or early in your entrance to the park. Again this is a signature hike that you must do.

Fun Hike
ก.ย. ค.ศ. 2021 • คู่รัก
We hiked early in the morning and had the trail to ourselves until we were headed back. Although there was a bighorn sheep that hung around near the trailhead.
Really enjoyed the ladder and the view at the end. Great short hike.

Believe the rating!

This is a great moderate, more strenuous hike. It’s fairly short, but about half way out you ascend a log ladder and at the top it’s a bit more adventurous. You’d want to keep a close eye on kids, and those with a fear of heights might want to reconsider this trail. Usually we find that trials are “over sold” regarding the difficulty. This was our first hike in SD and afterwards we decided to trust what the ratings said. However I totally recommend this hike. It was fun and different!

Nice short trail and beautiful views
ก.ย. ค.ศ. 2021
Beautiful trail and scenery. The ladder and trail are not as hard as one may perceive. There are plenty of people traversing it. You may also avoid the ladder by going up a small trail to the left of the ladder.

There is a great view of swallows' nests at the end of the trail that goes past the ladder.

Very nice trail with a good view at the end
ก.ค. ค.ศ. 2021
The issue with this very nice trail is that there is this ladder that scares so many people. Since there is a bottleneck at the ladder, you can go up the side (on the left, the second 'gully' closest to the ladder) and avoid having to wait for people coming down.

Once you get up the ladder, the trail is well marked and there are a couple of narrow ridges, but it's a pretty easy hike. At the end, you get to look out over the grasslands and it's a lovely view.

On the way back, you may have to wait for people going down the ladder, as there seem to be a lot of people who are terrified and move at a glacial pace getting down and you have no choice but to wait.

The whole hike is about 45 minutes, although that can be longer if you have to wait for bottlenecks at the ladder.

Our favorite trail, but was hard for me, but I'm not in great shape!
มิ.ย. ค.ศ. 2021
This was kind of a hard trail for me, a 56 year old big girl not in the best shape, but BOY WAS IT WORTH IT! We went slowly and took our time, rested on some rocks here and there and NO REGRETS! Loved the trail. Younger folks (or those in better shape than me) would say this is not a terribly strenuous hike, but it was the toughest one I personally did while I was in the Black Hills. Let me encourage you to try it! If you can climb a ladder, you can do it!! Loads of young folks were passing us, but we just slogged along and managed it well. I loved this as I felt like I accomplished something (don't laugh at me young, fit people)....Views at the end are worth it and the trail itself is the coolest trail I've ever taken.

Cool Trail with a high Ladder to Climb
พ.ค. ค.ศ. 2021
The Badlands were awesome! It was such a site to see the unusual landscape. We hiked part of Notch Trail. There is a ladder that you must climb and descend if you want to do the whole trail. My family climbed, but I did not. It is quite high and vertical. I am not a fan of heights. My husband is not either, but he climbed with our young adult and teen kids. He said it was tough to do being scared of heights. But, I saw whole families and kids going up and down, so it is all about your comfort level. The trail even to that point is really unique and I recommend it. We hiked other trails and visited the Ben Reifel Visitor Center and drove the loop. Fantasic! and we had time to do this all within a few hours. But, with more time you could definetly do more. We saw our first Bison here; he was right along the road at the exit and having a dust bath.

Gorgeous views!!
พ.ค. ค.ศ. 2021
As someone who hasn't hiked in over 4 years, I struggled when we got to the ladder part (we took an alternate route up instead of the ladder). There were some other parts that I was a bit hesitant on, but getting to the end made it worth it. I think this is the hardest trail of the four in this area. We did go down the ladder on our way back for the experience and I was glad not many people were around as it was difficult for me to navigate down. Super amazing views throughout this hike and I would do it again! (maybe in a few years!) :)

Fun trip up the log ladder
มิ.ย. ค.ศ. 2021
This was a pleasant little hike, not so great for smaller children. We saw a man slip with a baby backpack on...scary but they were okay. We sat at the bottom of the ladder while waiting for the rest of our group. Lots of people slipped and fell... not on the ladder but just after they got off. Wouldn't recommend for babies or small children in tow.

Fun, navigable trail with gorgeous view - best in Badlands
พ.ค. ค.ศ. 2021
I'm not an expert hiker, so we "warmed up" with Door and Window Trails. I was wearing efficient hiking boots, though. The Notch Trail's log ladder was fun and not too scary on the way up. The only real challenging part of the hike was what appeared to be a ledge with a precipitous drop off. The signs warned of danger and said to keep right. My husband navigated around while clinging to the right edge, but I stayed frozen in place. Meanwhile, another hiker came by and advised me to look up to my right. By climbing two or three rocks of moderate height, I was able to circumvent the scary ledge and continue on the trial. The view at the top of the trail was well worth it. Gorgeous, stark scenery. On the way down, another hiker advised me to hold onto the metal cables of the Notch Ladder, rather than the log steps. This made me feel much more secure in coming down. I highly recommend this trail!
