What a rush! We rented a Jeep just for this drive! We came from the top and went down which was absolutely terrifying. At points you are angled so steeply and sliding on sand with no protection from the edge. It was horrifying. That said, it got better at the end and you have some fun but it is not for the faint of heart. We just took the road back to Moab after that

Went in 2020 and this has become a near death story telling experience we share with friends lol. Make sure you have enough gas, probably a good idea to have some food and water (just in case) and prepare for no cell service. We were definitely unprepared and did not know what we were getting into. By the time we realized it there was no turning back (literally). We were overcome with fear for the entire two hours it took (13 miles, sharp switchbacks, going 8/9 mph) and our mortality became real. Pretty sure we suffered with acute stress for a few days when trying to go to bed having flashbacks. We can laugh about it now but I don’t think I would ever do that again.

Ich bin diesen Trail zusammen mit einem guten Freund gefahren, der auch etwas offroad experience hatte. Am Anfang war alles gut, nur steil und viel Geröll. Später war ich dann über die Bodenfreiheit unseres SUVs dankbar. Mein Kumpel ist öfter ausgestiegen und hat mich über die größten Klippen gelotst. Es war ein absolut tolles Erlebnis!

Met Adrift de Shafertrail gereden. Na de heftige regen en overstromingen in Moab, twee dagen eerder, waren er diverse verschuivingen van steen en rots. Gelukkig waren wij daar met ervaren chauffeurs en veilige jeeps maar onderweg troffen we ook een echtpaar halverwege de trail met een kapotte band, op randje van het smalle pad… dat wil je echt niet. De trail is erg smal en steil maar prachtig uitzicht en bijzonder.

You know that stomach dropping, regret-filled feeling you get when you’re strapped into a roller coaster, wondering why you decided to do this and there’s no turning back, but you know it’s going to be fine and over before you know it? Well this is like that except you don’t know it’s going to be ok when you feel like any plethora of rocks could slide onto you, out from under you, or somehow end up off the narrow ledge/road, and it lasts an hour!!! Every muscle in my body was sore afterwards from clenching my muscles and I literally cried. All 3 of us were very scared. Then it started raining which made things even scarier. I wouldn’t do it again, nor recommend, but if you’re a thrill seeker who likes living on the edge (literally) then you’ll love it!

We drove the backway from Potash Road. Plenty of potholes and ruts and cobbles and small boulders on the dirt road. Very few "shoulder" areas if 2 cars are trying to pass each other. There are a few areas driving up narrow cliffs and hillsides. Quite a few mountain bikes and quad runners were on the trail. The view from the flat area was awesome and a great stop after doing 1/2 of the trail.
we ascended the famous "Shafer Switchbacks which was really narrow and steep. thank goodness no car was coming topside.

The overlook is just a few steps from the parking lot. You view the serpentine trail that has been used for years, in wonderment on how they drove cattle herds, uranium trucks or even cars down the gravel road with no shoulder. An exhibit sign explains the history and you can watch the car and bike traffic test their nerve.

This is a must drive if you have a high clearance, 4 wheel drive vehicle. We descended the trail in our Yukon XL. The trail had recently opened and still had snow in some locations which made for some scary hair pin turns. However, the views are amazing. We continued down the trail to the Potash road and on to highway 239. The road was pretty rough near the ponds.

Wenn Sie gerne eine Offroad Tour in der Umgebung machen möchten, bietet sich der Shafer Trail an. Sie sollten jedoch ein Fahrzeug mit großer Bodenfreiheit und Allrad haben. Vor allem wenn Sie weiter über die Potash Road nach Moab fahren möchten. Tolle Ausblicke und etwas Adrenalin sind auf jeden Fall gewährleistet.

We were a party of 3 adults, with 2 rented jeeps. We decided to descend rather than ascend the famous "Shafer Switchbacks, and so did the trail "backwards," beginning just off Scenic Byway U-128 not far from the Red Cliffs Lodge and ending at Potash Road, a distance of just under 20 miles.
We were happy with this choice, which was immediately breathtaking, and not just because of the expansive views as we initially went down about 1400 feet, but also because coming down from that height on a narrow dirt/gravel road with such tight turns was rather unnerving. Yes, it did "take your breath away" in the sense too.
Our jeep had quite a long bed. At least twice in our descent, the switchback turn was so tight, that we couldn't safely make it around without stopping and backing up a bit to reposition. Views from the outside edge (with sometimes the driver, sometimes the passenger peering over it) were splendid, mostly exhilirating, sometimes unsettling. Fortunately, there was very little traffic, as we arrived early and most people were starting out at the other end, so had not yet made it here to the switchbacks.
I breathed a sigh of relief when we finally reached the "flatlands" and saw the long, straight road stretching out ahead of us. There were wonderful stops where we could see the Colorado River rushing by far below us. One was a place called the "Goose Neck," where the river snaked around a high promontory. And another was the iconic spot where "Thelma and Louise," from the movie of that name, appeared to hit the gas and drive over the cliff rather than surrender to the police. That's the place most people on this track want to see.
But the entire trail was interesting and unusual, with something new seemingly around every bend. We picked some wonderful places for snacks and lunch, so we could just gaze peacefully at everything around us. If you are constantly on the move, you really can't focus on the beauty of your surroundings, as every minute your eyes leave the track , you are potentially in danger. This is one location where you have to focus your full attention while you are on the move in the tricky, rocky environment.
All that said, our trip here was a blast, and we'd all do it again, exactly the way we did it this time. It is awesome and unforgettable.

Can any length of this trail be safely driven out and back on a regular clearance 2WD?

Planning on driving Shafer Road summer 2019. We have 4X4 truck camper, 12'6" tall,22ft long, 15,000lbs. Looks like some of the rock overhangs are low...will we have enough clearance? Thank you.

In talking with my husband he said he wouldn't do it and we were driving a full size Yukon Denali. There is one low overhang that could be a problem as well as one tight turn. I had to hang out of the window and guide him through the turn. We recommend if you do it to start at the top and go down but it would be best to check at the Canyonland Visitor center with one of the rangers and get their input. At 22 feet long it would be difficult to find a place to turn around if needed,

Hi, I am returning to Canyonlands in September 2018. I am dying to take the Shafer Canyon drive. My question is how far does it go? Can I drive from Canyonlands all the way back to Moab? Or Dead Horse State Park? Or is it a road that goes to Potash and then back to Canyonlands? Thank you!

You can drive all the way to Moab!!
A bit before the White Rim Rd you take the left into the Potash Rd. Follow this road all the way till you drive on the 279.
In the corner of the 279 is a parking spot, you can hike to the Corona Arch Trailhead!! After that continue to Moab.
A gem of day is ahead !!!

Can I drive my Dodge Caravan at Shafer Road. How rough is the road?

I would not attempt it as it is quite a dangerous road and quite challenging especially with a caravan I would only attempt it with a good 4 wheel drive, and it would be a challenge even for a 4WD especially in bad weather at night etc. I personally would not, but it all depends on you of course. Do your research well!!
