We only drove as far as we could through the park, deciding not to take their bus tour. It was rainy the whole day and we wouldn't get to see the Denali mountain anyway. We saw sheep, bear, moose, porcupine, elk and plenty of great scenery. Being stuck on a small school bus for hours with a crowd of people didn't seem so appealing and we made the right call.
Plenty to see and do on your own without their bus tour. Also, you can drive outside of the park and around to get great views of the mountains on a clear day.

The Denali National Park is a must. The views of the snow peaked mountains are unbelievable! We took the train from Anchorage which was another great experience.
Don't miss the Wilderness Tour, saw grizzly bear, moose and big horn sheep.

Six hour drive from Anchorage but well worth it. Spent two nights in Denali Bluffs. Clean, great food, excellent rooms. Cable was down while we were there. Denali Park bus tour was Outstanding. Elton Parks was our driver....couldn't ask for a better narrator and driver. Saw porcupine, lots of moose, bear, caribou, ptarmigan sheep, and a host of other wildlife. Definitely a must do when visiting Alaska. Recommend a tour within Alaska and not associated with the cruise lines. More sights, freedom, and our green bus wasn't "packed" like the cruise line tan buses.

It was so much fun and our guide (Little Kyle!) was full of facts and tidbits of information! I was hesitant because the weather was cold but it was the BEST way to see Denali! It was the best excursion we've had in the 4 days we've been here! Thank you Little Kyle!

Great Park, Great Views, Great Scenery everywhere, Great Wildlife everywhere. Sucks you can't drive into the park but the bus tours are fun and it isnt hard to use the shuttles. Not as many hikes as I would have thought there would be.

We visited Fairbanks to see the Aurora, not realizing that Denali National Park (formerly Mount McKinley) was nearby. With plenty of spare time during the day, we decided to drive 2 hours Southwest to explore this wilderness. It was well worth the trip, as we took advantage of amazing clear skies, which we learned from the park ranger was uncommon in these parts. As you can see from the photos, the landscape was stunning in its glory; a must see for any landscape photographer. Along the trail, we encountered a herd of 5 moose, feeding on some shrubs. While the drive into the park is definitely worth the effort (it was plowed up to the information center), be sure to travel further South of the park along Highway 3 for more breathtaking views.

Have been to Denali before but weather didn't allow us to see Mt. Denali. This time weather was great and the view was breath taking.

We picked a terrible season to go, apparently nothing is open until late May. We were there the first week of May and besides some deer and moose we didn't see anything else. All the trails were covered almost waist deep snow so impossible to walk. Not one single restaurant was open during first week of May, not even park services so don't come until last week of May.

On my last day in Anchorage, I rented a car to go see Denali. As I was close, I found a small town that was really so small I should have avoided it (sorry). I was a bothered a bit hoping to see other mountains on the drive. Tall trees on either side of the road blocked most views. Once I got close, I knew there was a view pullout on Highway 3. But once I got there the three feet of snow was not plowed to get to the viewpoint! As I backed up a bit, there was the Mount McKinley Lodge, parking lot plowed but blocked off to traffic – much better photoshoot of Denali!!

Hello I'm going on a cruise to Alaska next month 5/15 - 5/22. I will be at Anchorage for 3 day 2 night after my Princess cruise. It's shoulder seasons. My wish was to visit the Denali NP and Wonder Lake, but found out after doing research that wonder lake not going to open until June. :( Do you recommend I still do the shuttle bus to Toklat River? Will I see wildlife and find good hiking trails to go on? Which ones do you recommend? Thank you in advance for your advice!

Denali, Valdez is great too and in Anchorage we ate at a great place called F Street Station.
Prices of food in Alaska as a whole are pricey. Cost of flying food in.

Hi, I was wondering if three people want to take the School bus trip into Denali, how do we book it in advance for June? Who do we contact : I did not see reference to an actual tour group. Thanks, Linda

We took the Kantishna tour which is a private company and was more like 12 hours long and goes to the end of the road. They are the only ones allowed to do this privately as they own the lodge there. The park service runs the other buses to the best of my knowledge and can be booked in advance on their site. We did both the tundra wilderness tour and the longer one to Kantishna. Long days but we figured why are you in Denali?
Is it open in March?

Not unless you are a Ranger. The single road in and out would not be passable.

What is the best way to see the park ? Take the narrirated tour bus or the national park bus where you can get off and on.

Narrated bus tour was great. Our driver had actually lived in the area for two straight winters and had been leading a tour for 12 years. Guy was the best. If you love the park and wanted more time you could rent a vehicle once you knew where you wanted to go. While we were there, two couples were waiting for a big bull moose to get up from his resting place in a meadow. Tours can’t allow to that type of wait time. And that moose was massive....

My family is taking the bus trip to Wonder Lake. My kids are 10 and 12. Our tour leaves at 6:45AM. I know they don't give you food and there is nothing to buy along the way. Are you allowed to bring food on the bus? We aren't due back until 6:45PM and not sure we can go all day without eating anything.TIA

Yes! You are allowed to bring food and snacks in your back where ever you go. Just make sure you keep up with the contents because recycling is a huge deal and they want to keep the park clean. The wilderness your provided a snack box and water for the long trip. The place you are staying at should have the ability to make a lunch box but the option is up to you. Ultimately bring in the trip what you need.
Were you allowed to get down from the bus (aside from rest room breaks) for few minutes to enjoy the scenic beauty and take photos?

Alaska/ Denali has been my summer destination for the last 26 years. There are two types of concessionary buses going into the park.
The SHUTTLE bus is the MOST economical! On this bus your are allowed to get off to hike at any point as long as no wildlife has been spotted within 1/2 mile. After the hike, flag down the next shuttle bus going your direction and continue your trip (seats must be available). You can also change buses. If you pass a spot/ animal sighting and you would like to take a longer look...have your driver flag down the next bus going your way and hop on (seats must be available). Your ticket is good for the day. We like to take the shuttle to Eielson as we feel animal sighting past that point are slim. Usually your bus will allow about 30 minutes at Eielson, but you can always catch another bus back and stay longer for a ranger led hike! However; I have been to the end of the road and everyone should make that journey at least once! Tickets to Eielson run about $35.00 a day and you must supply your own food and water. Shuttle buses stop for animal/ landscape shots, but time is limited as the shuttle must stay on schedule. Drivers will NOT let you off to take photos!!!! If you love wildlife and fabulous scenery, the time on the shuttle will pass very quickly!!!!
The Tour Bus is the second choice, but can be very pricey! This is over $100.00 a day! You must stay with this driver all day. They do supply you some type of food and drink for the day. Your bus has drop down screens to allow you a closer view of the animals (the driver has a scope/ camera that feeds pictures to the drop screens). This bus only goes to mile 62! Tour busses load first at the hotels and finally make there way to the Wilderness Access Center (WAC) for the final loading. If you catch it at the WAC, you will most likely end up in a back seat! If you choose the tour, I would highly suggest you only consider the Tundra Wilderness Tour!!!!!! I have not heard good thing about the HISTORY tour!
Wishing you a fabulous visit to Alaska!
Did you and other passengers get opportunity to get down from the bus for few minutes (aside from just rest room brakes), to enjoy the scenic attractions and take photos? Were the seats in the bus comfortable?

Yes, there were several opportunities to get out besides for bathroom breaks. There was so much to see I do wish they let us out even more though since I take a lot of photos.
As far as the comfort of the seats, you need to realize there are two types of buses. The tan ones are used on the more expensive tours and have better seats (and are needed since the trips are longer) than the olive green ones which are used on the shorter trips.

I plan on booking passage on one of the transit buses all the way to Kantishna. I know these are 'school bus style' buses but I am 6'3" and am wondering about seat legroom. Hopefully they are configured for 'adults' and not schoolkids.
Any observations on this? it's a long ride......

From memory, this was two years ago, the legroom on the old school buses isn’t great. But maybe you could get an aisle seat and that would help you to stretch out. Or maybe you could get a seat right down the back so you could stretch your legs out down the aisle of the bus.
These tour buses are the only way to see the park though unless you’re lucky enough, like we have been once, to have a friend that lives in Alaska and wind the state lottery and is allowed to drive their own private vehicle around, giving you more leg room. Good luck.

We made our arrangements through the Alaska RR as part of a package. The bus picked us up at our hotel near the park.
