4 of us, all between 60-70 hiked this. Online said it was a moderate trail with some challenging sections. We’re not mountain trail climbers but wanted to experience the Smoky Mountains and a waterfall while traveling.
It was much more challenging due to the numerous large rocks and tree roots we needed to climb. The huge drop off the sometimes very narrow trail in spots was another. We found scavenged walking sticks which were a plus. I can’t imagine not using one!
We made it to the waterfall where we could cool our feet in the chilly water. Refreshing. But then the trek back. Proud we did it but not again.

Nice falls without the major crowds. Hiked here with family including a 6 and 8 year old. Keep an eye on the little ones because there are some steep dropoffs on the trail, however we had no major problems. Terrain can be a little challenging, but take your time, anyone can do this trail. Well worth the moderately short hike for the falls. The pool below the falls is the perfect place to cool off if its hot. Trail is short enough not to have to worry about bringing food or even drinks, although, its probably a good idea to bring a beverage. Highly recommend this hike for the lower crowds and time it takes to finish.

These falls are very pretty but not easy. There’s a lot of rocks & roots to trek over & the trail can be 2’ wide at times. I though it was harder than Groton Falls. Not a lot of room when you get to the falls. Be prepared to climb over big rocks to get a good spot to sit.

This trail was not very well marked and difficult to find but made it a more peaceful hike since there weren’t as many people. The hike itself was quite strenuous. Though it was only 2 miles you are climbing over rocks or tree roots almost the entire way. But the falls were powerful and beautiful and well worth the hike!

Hard trail for all of us, steep inclines and water on trail in places. Kids are 6&9 and were able to do it with some breaks (which were needed by the adults as well). Lots of yellow jackets around, one of us got stung. But man is it worth it at the end and you see the falls. Then you climb up next to the falls and touch them and cool off in the pool and it’s even MORE WORTH IT

This trail is a great little trail off of Tremont Road. The trail is about 1.3mi starting from the parking lot at the Tremont Visitor Center (which is closed due and may open in August). Anyhow, your adventure starts with a teaser of steps and easily traversed terrain and then the earth throws a few steep areas with a narrow path and some fun obstacles to overcome (nothing big, trees, tree roots, Boulders, etc). Just when you start to hear rushing water, you still have a ways to go. About 3/4 of the way there the trail is tame and starts to head down slowly. At the end, you will come to three levels of pools at the bottom of the falls. A well worth trip where one can wade in the deeper waters, or sit under the falls and have them beat down on you.
While at the falls, there were a few people in the morning. Around 11:30, as we were heading back, there were many people on the trails heading in and when back at the lot, the lot was full. So our take was, head out early.
If I had to guess, it took about 45min hike with some stops for photos along the way.

One of the nicer little waterfalls on the Tennessee side of the mountains. It can be reached by utilizing the trailhead at the Great Smoky Mountain Institute at Tremont for a nice walk through the woods or take the gravel road that takes you to the Middle Prong trailhead and cross the stream for a rock hop or three and a 100 yd scramble and you will be there. You will get wet crossing the stream and you will risk falling in due to the slick rocks but I always go in the middle of summer and plan on getting wet under the falls anyway. Aproximately one mile up the gravel road you will see a stream flowing down from the bank and into the middle prong. That is where you cross. Once across the stream, you can catch a glimpse of Spruce Flats Falls just a matter of yards away. Of course I am describing a summertime trip but the falls are beautiful year round.

This is a great trail! We first drove to the Middle Prong Trailhead, and hiked the Middle Prong to Lynn Camp Falls, then drove back to the Institute for the Spruce Flats Falls trail.
The trailhead for Spruce Flats Falls is at the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont.
The rocky and rooted trail leads to a beautiful waterfall. The trail is narrow and travels around the edge of the mountain. The elevation gain is 413 ft, but you have to remember this is over a distance of just under a mile. The total distance, round trip is 1.8 miles. We saw families with young kids on the trail and they were managing just fine.
You can cross to the other side of the stream, but be careful.
A nice place for a pic nic.
We did this trail after the Middle Prong to Lynn Camp Falls trail. A great combination.

Fun, mostly easy hike that is pretty good for families, and younger kids can probably handle fine. Beautiful waterfall at the top and gorgeous views along the way.

This falls hike was nowhere near as busy as most. I underestimated how challenging it would be. Lots of roots and rocks and narrow in areas, when it comes to passing other hikers. The falls were really pretty! Our 9-year-old was able to do this hike with us but the descent was pretty slow going.

How was the auto traffic getting to and from the parking area at Spruce flat falls?
Matt M

We were coming from Townsend which was just a couple miles from the turn leading back to the parking lot at Spruce Flats Falls. The roads are single lane in each direction once you are inside the park so it will depend on the speed of the cars in front of you. If you are coming from Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg you are likely to encounter more traffic. We arrived fairly early and there was no traffic in the parking lot but was starting to fill up by the end of our hike.

What is the easier route to the Falls other than Tremont?
Jacana
orlando1,085 ผลงาน
No. You have to park at the Tremont Institute. There is only one road in and this trail doesn’t have any connectors. The trail is moderate and pretty short.
Can leashed dogs be taken?

no...dogs are only allowed on The Gatlinburg Trail and the Oconaluftee River Trail on a leash.
They are allowed in parking areas on a leash and in the campgrounds on a leash. Check out the Great Smoky Mountain National Park website for info on their pet policies.

Was this hike hard for kids to do? I have a 10 yr old and 5 yr old that would love to see some falls while we are on our trip.

Is this kid friendly? My 3 yr old might need to be on his Ergo carrier. Is it tough with a 3 yr on the back? We are in out mid 40s.
Thanks

Depends on your physical shape. Not saying I wouldn't but be cautious. Go slower with good footing and hold onto trees when you can.
Look at the pics to get a better feel.

how do we find the opening to hiking this falls?

I put Tremont St. into the GPS on my iPhone and then once I turned into the road I just drove to the Smokey Mtn. Institure on left (couple miles I believe).
There you can park and the little gift shop gives directions.
Feel free to ask anything else.

Exactly where is this falls located? When I searched the Townsend Visitors Center in Tennessee, the road it's on is not Tremont. Anymore information you could give me would really help. We're heading over from Murphy NC.
Thanks,
Danielle

From Townsend take hwy 73 into the gsmnp at the 1st intersection take a right like you are heading to cades cove. In less than 1 mile turn left on to Tremont Rd. Go 2 or 3 miles turn left to Tremont Visitors Center (also located there is the Institute at Tremont). Park in the visitors center parking lot. Start walking up the road towards the dormitories. Then bear left up a gravel road to a dormitory. To the left of that building you will see signs to the Falls. The trail is well marked after that but the signs simply say Falls. I hope this helps
