We had visited this area previously and I still enjoy the loop drive. It offers so many scenic spots and turns. I think the Olympic Penninsula rocks!

We only did a portion of the loop on a recent girls trip. Came through Moclios, cutover to Quinault then over to Forks and into Rainforest & Sol Duc hot springs.
The drive is gorgeous and just being out of traffic and populated areas was a welcome change. The scenery along the loop is varied and roads well maintained.

WE started from the central coast of CA and traveled up the east side of the National Park, visited Port Angeles and visited Hurricane Ridge, Crescent Lake area and falls, Sol Duc Falls and soaking pools, Spruce trail. Then spend several days in Forks and visited the Hoh Rain Forest, Realto Beach, Ruby Beach, Tree of Life and the local tribal lands. The entire trip took 3 weeks and we have never seen such a lush forest, with a mix of broad leaf and conifer trees. Take some time and do this loop as it is well worth time time.

We absolutely love the Olympic Peninsula. The drive is not always scenic, but there are so many wonderful, picturesque offshoots to explore & so much variety. There are many ways to see the peninsula too - hop from lodge to lodge or spend extended time in one area. You can't go wrong. I recommend taking several days to really enjoy all it has to offer. Can't wait to go back!

We did not do the entire loop, since we took the ferry from Seattle and went went straight east from Olympia. There is so much to see while driving, so make sure you pull over frequently. Some of our highlights were Dungeness Spit, Port Townsend downtown, The Port Angeles waterfront (saw a sea otter), the hikes at Hoh Rain Forest, and the Pacific Ocean Beaches.

After visiting Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier, the drive along the Olympic Peninsula Loop was rather underwhelming. Some parts were not very scenic. The exceptions for scenery, though, were the views around Crescent Lake and Hurricane Ridge. The road was rough to drive in certain spots as cars would park on the side of the road. There are a few beaches to stop by, though, the Pacific is a wild ocean, so I'm not sure how good the views will be. You can do the loop in one day, though, it is a very long day.

This is one of America’s best regions for a road trip (admittedly among thousands...) I’ve taken over a week or more to drive it. What most people say is true: just two points to clarify...
1. Given the new era we are in, make sure the site or sights you want to see are open ahead of time. (La Push and Shi Shi close frequently. Currently for Covid. I hope this changes soon but I support the Native American tribe for keeping it healthy.)
2. A reviewer below says it’s better and “makes common sense” to drive counter clockwise around Highway 101. This is silly and untrue. There is no “wrong way” to go. I’ve gone each direction and sometimes even spiraled around to see different places at different times. Go in any direction that makes sense for your personal itinerary.
ENJOY!

The Olympic Peninsula is one of our favorite vacation places for exploring natural beauty. There are dozens of side trips off the main highway that will take you to wonderful places to visit and enjoy nature. While it is physically possible to do the loop in one long day, you’ll only be able to see 2 or 3 sights and you’ll spend most of your time in your car. Taking two days will let you add 2 or 3 more sights, and spending three or more nights will enable time to explore a wide range of activities. Starting from Seattle and going counter clockwise, here are some of my favorite highlights:
- the ferry ride across Puget Sound with views of the city and mountains
- Dungeness Spit, long hike to a lighthouse on the Straits of Juan de Fula.
- Hurricane Ridge, in Olympic National Park, a 17 mile drive up a scenic road to 5200 ft in elevation to enjoy trails through meadows and stunning views of the Olympic Mountains. Not to be missed!
- Elwah Valley, Olympic National Park, if you have extra time, you can visit a pretty waterfall and hike up an abandoned road to where a dam was removed.
- Lake Crescent, Olympic National Park, the winding highway along the shore is scenic. Stop at the lodge for a meal, or for kayaks or swimming. There is an easy 1 mi hike to Marymere Falls too.
- Sol Duc, Olympic National Park, this side road takes you to Sol Duc Hot Springs, a rustic resort with hot spring water piped into pools. Further up is an easy 1 mi hike to a pretty waterfall in a lush forest.
- Neal Bay, visit the Northwest most point in the US at the end of a 1 mi trail to see cliffs and rock formations and a bird covered island. This is on a Native American reservation with a good museum in town. This is a bit further off the loop.
- Rialto Beach, Olympic National Park, due west of the town of Forks, explore the wild coast with massive seastack rock formations and sea life.
- The Hoh Rainforest, Olympic National Park, hike short trails from the visitor center to see lush growth and gigantic trees covered in moss. With up to 17 feet of rain, everything is overgrown.
- Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park, easy access to a beach where a river meets the ocean. Large rocks and sea stacks with tide pools teaming with life at their bases can be explored.
- Kalaloch, Olympic National Park, near the lodge is a wide sandy beach. There are cabins here if you reserve far in advance.
- Quinault valley, there is another rainforest trail here on National Forest land, a beautiful old lodge, and the worlds largest spruce tree. Further up the road are some small waterfalls.
- Ocean Shores, sleepy resort town with wide sandy beaches you can drive out on. North from there are more beaches and sandy cliffs.
There’s plenty of natural wonders to enjoy on the Olympic Peninsula. We love going back to explore more.

This is a beautiful drive through some of the most lush forests. You can do this trip in a day, bring a lunch or stop in one of the towns, super easy drive. If you are a hiker or a biker you will adore this place and want to come back!

Hi. We are visiting ONP for 7 days. From October 8-14 Just wondering if we should stay in the park and if so what places and for how many nights each. We love our NP but have never been to ONP.

Hello,
I’m looking to visit Olympic National Park park for three days. The areas I’m looking to visit is HOH rainforest, ruby beach, and the hot springs. Can someone recommend the best town to stay ? It looks like port angeles or fork but I’m not sure what’s closer or a better option.
Thank you in advance :)

We really enjoyed Lake Quinault Lodge and Lake Crescent Lodge looked nice although it was closed when we passed through. If you stay in Port Angeles, Olympic Lodge was reasonably priced and nice. I know there is also lodging at the hot springs. We stayed in Port Angeles after seeing Seattle in morning, taking Ferry to Bremerton and going up to Hurricane Ridge so it was a good stopping Point. On day 2 it was great to stop at Marymere Falls and then Ruby Beach before Quinault because neither was off the beaten path. We skipped Sol Duc and Hoh because they involved a lot more driving.

We are planning to fly into Portland in the middle of April. Will spend half a day in Portland and planing to stay in olympia/tumwater area.Thinking of leaving for Hoh rainforest the next day and come back to olympia the same day. Is this doable? We plan on going to the Skagit valley Tulip festival the next day....is it a better idea to stay the night at Port angeles and from there head to port townsend and get the ferry and drive to skagit valley instead of coming back to Olympia? Not really sure about routes or the time factor.Any advice would help ..thanks!

Hey Andy: I am planning a cross country trip next year in May and I will be driving from Seattle to the Olympic peninsular on Highway 101 with plans to see the National Park and everything it has to offer. The plan is to do the loop and ultimately end up in Portland on this leg of the trip. I am traveling solo and am estimating that it may take me 3 days to do the loop if i include a day trip to Hurricane Ridge? I am open on how long I can stay in an area so I am open to itinerary changes. What else should I see? Where should I stay?

Hi, we did the loop in about 2 1/2 days but regret not having stayed longer. We made Olympia our base, but drove one day up the East coast to Port Angeles. We stayed at the Olympia Lodge which was very nice. We regret not staying longer there so we could take a ferry one day to Vancouver. From Port Angeles you go up to Hurricane Ridge. Hopefully the weather is clear that you can enjoy the view. Allow a couple of hours up there for hiking. The next morning we drove to Crescent Lake and Soleduck Falls. Stopped at the lake but hiked around the falls. Beautiful scenery. After that we drove to Kalaloch where we stayed at Kalaloch Lodge. Had a view of the ocean. Very peaceful. Must stop at 2nd Beach and Riviera Beach to see the sea stacks and driftwood on beach.
When we let Kalaloch we went to Moss Tree Trails for another hike and then to see the largest Spruce tree in the world in Quinault. After that it was a long drive back to Olympia.
We also drove to check out Mt. Ranier and Mt. Hood. Drove down to Astoria. Hiked Beacon Rock overlooking Columbia River.
Hope this was helpful

What are the absolute can't miss amazing highlights? Coming into Seattle on an evening flight. Thinking 1 day in Seattle then start our road trip. We have less than 2 days to explore this beautiful place. Then down the coast to Oregon and California. All input greatly appreciated. We planned on doing the northern/western loop

My husband and I are going to be in Bremerton mid second week in September. Currenty we have booked three nights there. Planning to whale watch out of Port Angeles(sp?). Sounds like we should do this loop. Wondering if we should move our third night to a different spot around the loop, beyond Port Angeles or the port itself? Nice to see a post from a recent visitor.

New Zealand couple travelling up the coast from San Francisco and we want to spend 4 days exploring the Olympic Peninsula before staying with friends in SW Seattle. We are flexible with dates towards the end of August (can avoid the weekend) with our plans. We have not made any bookings for accomodation - any suggestions of good places to stay and stop at. Then to get from Port Townsend to Seattle - should we catch the car ferry or drive further down the peninsula?

Here's the information from my review I posted. You could do the same but shorten the time you spend at each place. Best call for lodging soon as with any US National Park, trying to secure a place in summer might be difficult. There are many places to stay in FORKS, WA but nothing like actually staying in the park itself. Good luck and welcome to the US!
We spent a 7 days, 8 nights doing the Olympic Loop. Granted we did a lot of hiking to really explore the park. This is our 25th National Park we visited and it is a beauty. As others mentioned it is very diverse. Highly recommend taking your time. Even if you don't hike there are many easy walks to enjoy the beaches, rain forests and mountains.
We met people that used one location as a base. I don't recommend that as you will spend too much time driving. We started at Lake Quinault Lodge for 2 nights, moved on to the beaches and stayed at Quileute River Resort (not to be confused with Quileute Oceanside Resort) for 2 nights. Moved on from there to Lake Crescent Lodge for four nights. It was perfect. On the way back to SeaTac we drove 101 south along the Hood Canal.

Hi, Maricela M. What would you like to know about this attraction? How much time did you dedicate to the park. I am thinking of a 2-3 day excursion.
MKtravelers19
San Mateo, CA524 ผลงาน
It really depends on what you like to do. This park is very diverse and doing 2-3 days you really wouldn't experience much, like hiking, vistas etc. But if all you have is 3 days, go for it and see what you see. Maybe don't do the loop but concentrate is one or two areas.

What is the Olympia Peninsula Loop?
RosaritoRita

Hi dstober, the Olympic Loop is an amazing 450 mile drive all the way around the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State. Delightful long weekend excursion on slow roads that takes you through several different environments (alpine meadow, dripping green rain forest, conifer forest, rugged log-strewn shoreline and small towns). Wonderful uncrowded gem of the U.S.!

We have reserved a rental car and will be traveling the Olympic Peninsula in August for 4 days...staying at Olympic Lodge one night, Lake Crescent Lodge one night, and Quileute Oceanside Resort in La Push for 2 nights. We had planned to drive from La Push to SEATAC the morning of Aug 10 to catch a 2:40pm flight back to Texas. I am now rethinking my plans. Should we head back to Seattle sooner?

Hello Fellow Traveler JP,
Here is my experience from just visiting Olympic National Park and returning my rental car to SEATAC for our flight home. Prior to was staying in Silverdale on work assignment again.
From your La Push location SEATAC is 194 miles. Generally 4 hours but that is optimum and on distance calculators. Actual time will be more like 5 driving on a Wednesday during your driving time slot and utilizing the 2+ passenger lanes, a big help getting north through Tacoma to the airport.
Take 101=>104=>3=>16=>Tacoma Narrows Bridge $6 =>5 North (Seattle) to Exit 154 (a little tricky) west right exit onto ST 518. SEATAC rental car return signs just ahead.
Make sure the Hood Canal Bridge is functioning and has no openings planned if you stay full term and depart early On August 10. There is not much to do at the airport short of driving into downtown Seattle that is fun but can be extremely congested coming and going.
