Check online before going to the park, as most of the trails were closed. Unfortunately, you have to pay for the parks pass to get to the visitor centre to see decent trail maps and find out what the story is - so that is a problem. Then, when in the park, the hiking trails are poorly marked - especially the Big Stump trails. There were tracks going every which way with no maps of where you were, and the odd sign near a stump. So I suggest you get AllTrails on your phone and plan ahead, then monitor how you are going for time whilst walking.
From the Big Stump car park, I headed to Viola Falls and then up the Sunset Trail. Pine trees must be very weak, as there were trees down everywhere. But hopping over and around the fallen logs and branches made the trails a bit more interesting, as overall the scenery apart from the big sequoia's is not that exciting.

Way better than uluru. Did the 3 hour walk and even though it was 6km it felt way longer. The 500 steps I wouldnt say was hard, but if you arent fit you might struggle.

Great 3-4hr hike but only for the fittest. The initial climb is tough for about 30mins but afterwards it’s mainly level with some short climbs and descents, the last section is relatively easy.
The views are amazing and worth the climbs, if you suffer with vertigo don’t attempt. There are sections that are dangerous and there are plenty of warning signs, at least one person has died on the route although they were larking around!
The circular route itself is well marked and easy to follow, it took us around 4hrs with stops. Take loads of water we drank over 4litres between us and it was not hot, less than 30deg day. The rangers won’t let up after 9am if the temp is higher. We were told to start at 7am which was ideal.

Actually connected to the Sequoia Park, I am so happy I went there. There are many attractions not to be missed here. The roads are also great drives!

Kings Canyon is a beautiful NP, also adjacent to Sequoia NP. The scenic drive is lovely, with stunning views. Plenty of vehicle pull overs for photos and many places to take a hike.
Grant's Tree is amazing and the Sequoias are enormous.
Glad we stayed and enjoyed the views

Kings Canyon is a wonderful National Park just adjacent to Sequoia National Park and they are connected so you can travel between one and the other and your park pass covers both. The park lies within a couple of hours drive from Fresno and is stunning. From the General Grant tree to Roaring River Falls, it is a beautiful place to spend a day.

Kings Canyon and Sequoia national parks are connected and similar, but not the same. The southwestern section of kings is very similar to sequoia (really, really big trees). The back of kings is the actual canyon and worth the hour drive to see. In both places you end up at pretty high elevation and you may feel it. Most of the short hikes are easy enough, but go slow.
Drive the generals highway from the bottom of sequoia to the front section of kings. It’s a lot of steep switchbacks, so go slow and don’t worry about the people behind you driving too fast. Lots of pull-offs to let them by.

This was my second trip into Kings Canyon in two years. Drove down the beautiful road into the canyon noting the amazing views from both the top and the bottom. Did the Mist Falls Trail hike again...this time with lots of water pouring down. Amazing.
Don't skip this canyon if you are visiting Sequoia. It's completely different and it is spectacular.

Hi, How is drive from Fresno to Kings Canyon NP? I see 6000 ft elevation. I saw a video on YouTube. I think Sequoia NP is closed, saw on NPS website. I have an old sedan car. A friend told drive was difficult. I have driven to Grand Canyon South rim from Page, AZ.
Are there any remaining impacts from the Kings Canyon and Sequoia National Park wildfires over the past 4-5 years? Are there scorched trees etc.?

You could tell about some dead trees from the fires but the view is still stunning, don’t stay at the lodge inside too many scary insects even with insecticide we spayed .

We are visiting Kings Canyon in September. We are arriving from Yosemite late morning one day, staying one night at Grants Grove cabins and need to leave the park after lunch the next day. I wish we had more time but want to see all we can while there. Any suggestions as to how to spend our time seeing as much as we can? We are moderate hikers so would like to mix driving and hiking to see what we can. Appreciate any input. Thanks!

Thanks for a great review. I have been wondering whether to spend an extra day in order to travel into Kings Canyon. The 45 minutes you mention, is that from Grant Grove to Wuksachi? Didn't realise that reservations were needed for Wuksachi restaurant, is that always the case.

I do not think you always need reservations but I might call to confirm. Enjoy!

Hello. I am hoping someone could help out a dilemma. I'm considering a visit to Kings Canyon National Park next year in May to celebrate my mom's 60th birthday with my family and my hubby and our golden retriever. My hubby and I love camping and want to find a campsite in the beautiful National Park, but my family (my Dad particularly) do not really camp. I'm hoping to find a place where there's a campgrounds for tenting and cabins nearby, or side-by-side--something for everybody's taste. I know it's very rare for both tenting and cabins to be in the same ground, but I've seen a few in San Diego county so I'm really hopeful that there's one in Kings Canyon as well. Any advise and info would be appreciated. thanks!

King's Canyon may work well for you! The Cedar Lodge is a short walk down the road from one of the campgrounds and a ranger station, maybe a 5 minute walk to the other side of the creek. Campers regularly come to the Lodge for camp supplies in the little shop, or to eat at the Lodge's "snack shop" for a hot breakfast, a packed sandwich for the trail or a quick dinner (burgers, chili). The rooms in the Lodge, although you have to step outside to get to them from the shop & dining area, are warm and comfy but certainly not luxurious so hopefully your dad would like it.

hi! i'm considering a visit to kings canyon on the 7th of august, instead of my original plan to visit yosemite, which i might cancel due to the fire. kings looks like a a great place to visit. my question is if the yosemite fire influences the air condition in kings canyon as well? any info. would be appreciated.
thanks!

Do not know about air quality at Kings Canyon. Kings Canyon might be worth a trip but it is not really a substitute for Yosemite when it comes to the views but I understand your fire considerations.
This may be a long shot because all of these question and answers were years ago. We are planning on camping in cedar grove for over a week. Normally we would purchase our ice (for our cooler) from the market attached to the cedar grove lodge but that will not be open until after we leave. Does anyone have any suggestions? To my knowledge the closest “market” or place for ice is in grants grove and we don’t plan on making that drive every couple days for ice. Anything closer? Would really appreciate it as we don’t want to live on canned food and ramen for a week! TIA

There may be a place right in sequoia near Kings Canyon. There are a few restaurants and hotels. Maybe you can use a hotel ice maker.

I am not sure whether you have your own caravan or tents.....but Cedar Grove Village has a very nice Lodge where you can get rooms to stay. The room we took had two queen size beds and a bathroom. It was very comfortable.
They also have a canteen of sorts for the three main meals....though it closes at 8:30 at night for dinner....and the other times also are a bit strict....so you may need to ask about them.
This place is on the banks of the Kings River and so absolutely an idyllic spot.
Hi
Is Cedar Grove camping safe for small kids? We are going up next week and am wondering what to expect with the high river warnings? How are the hikes in King's Canyon? Was hoping to go to Zumwalt Meadow with the kids.
Thank you

Hi. I haven't camping at Cedar Grove, but the Zumwalt Meadows trail is great, the kids will love it.
