One of the most pleasant Shenandoah hikes
พ.ย. ค.ศ. 2021
Finding this hike can be confusing. It is a moderate hike . Very scenic. If you like waterfalls this is the trail to take. It can be easily combined with the Dark Hollow Falls Trail to the base of the falls and back.

Favorite Hike from Our Trip
พ.ย. ค.ศ. 2021
This was our favorite hike of the trip. I lost count of how many different waterfalls we saw! We did the 4-mile loop hike by parking at Fishers Gap Overlook and then crossing over Skyline Drive to the trailhead. There was a chain link between 2 yellow posts in front of the trail (I think to keep vehicles out), so we walked around that and went to the left first. This was at the advice of a travel blog so that during the hike you see the waterfalls as you approach them (so they're in front of you & it's more scenic), vs. coming at them from the other way around. We did the short .25 mile diversion to Dark Hollow Falls (totally worth it!), and then came back to our car via the Fire Road trail. The hike took us around 2 - 2.5 hours. I would say it was probably "lightly moderate." I would definitely do this hike again.

A pretty hike, with an alternative
ต.ค. ค.ศ. 2021
A beautiful hike. There is a downward slope on the trail to the falls which may be tricky for those with mobility problems and of course you have to come back up, not steep but definitely up, again. The trail follows the river about half the way, so you get to see scenic babbling water and small rapids. A few places to sit on rocks and dangle your feet in the water. Also know that the view of the falls is best from below, which requires good and steady footing. If you want an easier walk to a photo opportunity falls, take the Rose River Fire Road from the Fisher's Gap Overlook to Dark Hollow Falls. Or you can combine the Rose River Loop with the Rose River Fire Road, which will take you to Dark Hollow Falls, and make a loop from the Fisher's Gap Overlook parking.

Nice Looking, But Not Easy to Get To
ก.ย. ค.ศ. 2021
.............at least via the route we took from Dark Hollow Falls. Lots of rocks and big tree roots to get over. And, a good uphill climb to the Skyline Drive.

And, it being the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend didn't help. Hundreds of people on the trail and dozens of dogs, some unleashed.

Beautiful trail

We loved this hike. Has everything a hiker would enjoy. Nature, waterfalls, wildlife, and a great trail. Not difficult and under the canopies of high trees makes it suitable for summer and rainy days . I spent a week in the park and did 15 different trails, I did Rose River ( and passing by Dark Hollow twice. The road back from it to the parking lot is a very easy one too.

Moderate Hike to a Pretty Waterfall
พ.ค. ค.ศ. 2021
The Rose River Falls trail, with its trailhead at mile 49.4 of Skyline Drive, can be hiked as the more common 4-mile (6.4k) loop trail with a 910-foot (277m) elevation gain or a shorter, out and back, 2.6-mile (4.2k) roundtrip hike with a similar elevation gain. Arriving latter in the day, we decided on the out and back option so we could be sure of completing our hike before dark.

From the trailhead parking, we crossed Skyline Drive, crossed the chain blocking vehicle access to the gravel Rose River Fire Road and took the immediate left onto the horse trail with the yellow blazes. After about 0.6 miles (1.0k) on the steady but gradually sloping downhill horse trail, the blue blazed Rose River Falls departs to the left and immediately begins a steady and steeper downhill decent over a series of long, wide switchbacks that makes for a good workout on the way back. With about 0.3 miles (0.5k) before the falls, the trail levels a bit and follows along the ridge at the top of the river’s gorge until one reaches the waterfall.

Rose River Falls is a 67-foot (20m) high cascade and while quite pretty, it does not have the volume of water nor beauty of the nearby Dark Hallow Falls. After taking in the falls, one can either continue forward to complete the loop or, as in our case, turn around and start the climb back out.

Good all around hike
มิ.ย. ค.ศ. 2021
This was a great hike - we added on Dark Hollow Falls instead of doing it separately, and really enjoyed it. There's lots of elevation change and difficult footing with all the rocks and roots, so bring your water and wear your hiking shoes!

Incredible hike!!
พ.ค. ค.ศ. 2021 • ธุรกิจ
This has to be one of my fave hikes in the Shenandoah Valley! Lightly trafficked, tons of flowers and different birds, gorgeous scenery, plenty of shade, and an incredible waterfall at the end!!

I would call this trail moderate - definitely wouldn't recommend a beginner do it alone. The incline isn't too bad - AllTrails had me at 741 feet gained for my hike but that was in just over 4 miles - AllTrails says this is 2.4 miles but it's longer. It's a well maintained trail but it's rocky in a lot of places. And when you get closer to the river, it gets muddy in places and a lot more rocky. The trail is very obvious most of the time and is well marked with paint on the trees.

You'll be able to see the falls from the trail, but for close up views and excellent photos, I recommend climbing to the bottom if you're able. Be aware though- it requires some pretty decent rock scrambling - large boulders and lots of them! And the loose dirt is slippery.

Definitely recommend decent hiking shoes for this trail - and I didn't use my poles, but they would've been helpful getting up and down from the falls.

The trailhead is along the main road in Shenandoah National Park (Skyline Drive). If you're coming from the Front Royal entrance station, you'll park on the right and the trail is on the left - there's a pedestrian cross walk but be careful Bc the cars kind of have a slight blind spot coming up on it. There's plenty of parking and it's mostly gravel.

There are some partial trail closures in the area, and they had signs all around showing the details. It didn't affect getting to the falls so no worries. I think it keeps you from being able to do the whole loop though.

I didn't see any bathrooms so be prepared! There are some bathrooms at a pull out info station just before this trail though and other places in the park too.

If you go to the right of the parking area, you can get onto the Appalachian Trail!! And there are some pretty amazing views from the viewpoint of the gorgeous Shenandoah Valley!! Love this trail! Highly recommend!!

Nice but not Sure if Worth the Elevation After Dark Hallow's
พ.ค. ค.ศ. 2021
There is a lot of discussion about the loop and which direction to go. However, the most important thing to know is to even have the opportunity you need to start from the Fisher's Gap parking lot, not the parking lot at Dark Hallow's Falls.

We enjoyed the hike but Dark Hallow's had taken a lot out of us by the time we got to the creek. The hike through the forest was nice but if you were to do the entirety of both hikes, Rose River is nice but Dark Hallow's is better. Again the loop is the best but you have to use the right overlooking parking lot to make it work. I like waterfalls but if I am going to do that much elevation, I would like a great vista at the end. This left me wanting. However, much of this hike is simply forest. It is a long time until you reach the creek. Still there were plenty of wildflowers to enjoy along the way.

Beautiful rocky scenic hike!
เม.ย. ค.ศ. 2021
We are not experienced hikers, but our daughter (8) wanted to hike on our recent trip to Shenandoah. We mistakenly took the opposite path than is commonly recommended and I found it to be very challenging. I will say that it was 100% worth the exhaustion. Our daughter loved the hike. There was often active water and falls during most of the hike. Our Jack Russell also hiked with us. He has cancer but did amazingly well despite the very rocky final incline to the fire road. A beautiful hike on a crisp spring day.
