Enjoyable Trail, Varying Terrains!

While waiting for the next available Wind Cave Tour, we hiked the Elk Mountain Nature Trail. It is a well-marked, moderate trail, that meanders through varying terrains and was much longer than we anticipated. We enjoyed the natural beauty of the area, including the wildlife that we occasionally caught glimpses of. We were enjoying the hike so much, we had to hustle back, so that we didn't miss the cave tour!

A beautiful, peaceful trail.

Be prepared for grasses tickling you, animals chirping or buzzing at you as you gently trespass thru Wind Cave's areas. Perfect to get away from driving to better absorb the amazing acres.

Easy hike with great views

This was a pleasant hike with great views and considerable wildlife. We also took photos of several flowering plants.

Call this Wind Cave National Park...the top draw to the area vs the forced description "Elk Mountain Nature Trail"

TripAdvisor has this area mislabeled...the tail wagging the dog as "Wind Cave" is a National Park. Wind Cave definitely should be visited as the cave is like no other. That said, the area above ground is part of the park and its preservation has attracted herds of bison. We stopped to watch the bison, many as close as 20 feet from our car, and they must have had 20 small calves in the herd. It was a delight to see and hear them.
Even if Wind Cave sold out of tickets (which it doesn't typically but its neighbor Jewel Cave does) - I'd go again just to see this preserved prairie and bison. It was truly amazing. The cave has an easy, moderate and strenuous tour. The only difference between moderate and strenuous is 15 minutes and 150 more stairs. I wish we'd taken the Strenuous level as Moderate wasn't bad. Our teens were not phased at all and we never needed to stop or sit and we aren't climbers. Our guide was informative and knew her cave facts!
We did not go on Elk Mountain trail and did not see anything about this when we were there. The cave's visitor center has a descent store and informative video.

An OK hike - but better options within Wind Cave park

We hiked on a half dozen of the developed trails and Wind Park - and this was by far the least impressive.

It's a short trail around a campsite - and the campsite is visible for much of the hike. One can pick up a brochure that helps one learn a little about the natural environment as one hikes.

Probably a decent option if already in the camp site, wanting a little (but not a lot of) exercise and an opportunity to learn a bit about the environment. But there are better hikes for more impressive scenery.

Where Grasslands and Forest Converge

The Elk Mountain trail is a 1.2 mile easy loop hike. The hike begins in the Elk Mountain Campground. A sign directs you to the trailhead where you can pick up a trail guide to use at the nine interpretive stops. The hike starts out with a gentle climb through the forest to a ridge line where you will walk through a grasslands area. The trail then reenters the forest as you continue your circle around the far end of the campground eventually ending near the amphitheater. If you need a restroom, you're in luck. We were told that this area is one of the best places in the to see elk. We didn't.
