By far, the best hike ever! We were not sure we wanted to do this hike at first. We heard different reviews about water levels and difficulty but decided to go for it. We rented from Zion Guide Hub and did the bib gators, boots, walking stick. Get there early since it gets really crowded by afternoon. Water level came up to chest height ( I am 5’4”). We stayed dry! Our feet got wet but the neoprene suit and boots were good. The water was cold so we were glad we had the waders. We had a dry pack and a backpack that we carried above the water level. As long as you take your time, watch your footing in the water and use the walking stick, it is manageable. We wore shorts and a few layers on top. We made it all the way to Wall Street!

This is a bucket list hike and a must do in Zion. It is out and back so you can do whatever distance you are comfortable with. Definitely bring or rent the correct gear so the experience is comfortable and safe - we rented the waterproof bibs, boots, waterproof daypack and hiking pole and were so glad that we did - we never would have made it as far as we did without the right equipment to keep us warm in October (it was cold in the morning so we wore layers that we gradually took off and kept in the daypack). We are 61 and 62 but in pretty good shape and we made until the end of wall street where we would have had to swim. We highly recommend Zion Guru to rent equipment in Springdale - they let you pick it up the day before so you can get an early start the day of your hike. They are well versed on the daily conditions and prepare you well for the terrain and conditions. Highly recommend getting an early start to beat the crowds for a better experience - it was gorgeous going out but the last mile was crowded coming back!

Great hike . Rent your shoes , socks, walking stick and waterproof backpack the night before . Highly recommend you do that .The deepest part for us was in the beginning , we turned around 2.5 miles in . It was breath taking beautiful. So glad we did this . Highly recommend. Be aware no bathrooms along the way.

This was our favorite hike of the entire grand circle. We did fiery furnace at Arches, multiple hikes at Mesa Verde, and Queens Garden at Bryce Canyon. We spoke to multiple couples the night before and we followed their advice. We went to Zion Gurus and rented the boots, socks, and walking stick. We were happy we did! Their were places where the stick kept me upright in the current. My husband and I are both over 5’7” and the water level was just about waist level in one spot. Most of the hike is knee deep or less. We did take one of the first shuttles at just after 6 AM from the visitor center. When we came out around lunch it was madness with people everywhere. We rode the shuttle back to the visitor center and ate lunch in the back of our rented SUV. We watched as multiple cars circled the lot looking for parking. You won’t get parking at the visitor center that late in the day.

Water felt great. Definitely rent or bring a walking pole. Don’t wear sandals. You will get wet. Fun experience.

Une rando vraiment géniale!!! On remonte le canyon dans la rivière, c’est vraiment top, magnifique. Mais attention, il faut être correctement équipé ; nous étions en chaussures de randonnée avec un bâton chacun. Selon nous, le bâton est vraiment nécessaire pour garantir les appuis et éviter les chutes. Cette sortie est très populaire, nous sommes partis tôt, avons pris la navette vers 07h et nous n’avons pas regretté car il y avait un monde fou à notre retour, en début d’après midi.

シャトルバスに40～50分ほど乗り終点のテンプルオブシナワバからの平坦なトレッキングを30分ほど行くとナローズの入り口に。ほとんどの観光客はここで引き返してしまうがザイオンの目玉のナローズはここから始まる。
ザイオンに来てナローズに行かず何処にトレッキングするのかと言いたいほどだ。
今回は昼間にナローズを出発してオーダービルまで目指したが１時間30分ほど行ったところであれだけ晴れていた天気が急変し雷はなり始めものの10分ほどで土砂降りの雨に。。。 近くにいた人たちと話してこれはかなりヤバイ状態だよねとお互いに言い聞かせてあと少しでオーダービルなのはわかっていたがすぐに引き返すことに。 Fash Floodはいつ起きてもおかしくないし一度アンテロープキャニオンでFash Floodで股下まで一気にずぶ濡れになったこともあるので無理は絶対にしてはならない。電波の届く位置に着いたら携帯にはFlashFloodのアラートとナローズはクローズされたと沢山の着信あった。
改めて次の日にトライしたが水量はそれなりにあり胸まで深いところが何カ所かあったが最終目的地のオーダービルまではなんとかたどり着くことが出来た。
ナローズに行くならしっかりとしたウォーターシューズとトレッキングポールが必要。 ビジターセンターの近くのショップでもレンタル出来るので間違ってもクロックやビーチサンダルで行くのはやめよう。
非常に楽しいトレッキングルートだがビジターセンターで最新情報を得るのはもちろん絶対に無理してはいけない。

We love this trip inside the narrows
You have from the bus stop about 1.8 km to walk on an easy path then you can get into the water to walk on the river bed till the fork then it will add 3.2 km in the water
Sometimes you have water to your tummy… cold water … and it’s just at the beginnings
It’s not always easy to walk on the rocks as you can’t see them in the water
We saw people bare foot, pregnant women, and family with very small toddlers … that’s insane !
You should only do the trip if you can walk and have water trekkings sandals
If you intend to walk inside the narrows then leave early as the round trip will take you between 6 and 7 hours if you stop to look around and enjoy your surroundings

Hiking the narrows is a must if your physically fit. We are a family of 5 (kids are 15, 14 and 12) and we are all in great shape and this was much harder than I thought. The water is very muddy so you can’t see a thing and have no idea where the rocks are. It’s a challenging, but very unique excursion! We went about 2.5 miles one way and then had to turn around due to a storm coming in and the narrows was closing due to flash floods. There is a 1 mile walk to get to the narrows. This is a very crowded hike with people of all ages and abilities so it can take a bit. Once you go a ways in the river, you start to lose some people so it’s not as crowded. The water is very cold but you quickly get used to it as your concentrating on where to step so you don’t fall!
We didn’t rent walking sticks for $5 or waterproof socks and shoes for $40. In our opinion, it was a waste of money and wasn’t going to make the hike easier. A stick might have helped some. Your shoes are going to be soaked either way as you’re walking in a river!
Would totally recommend this hike and do it again! Make sure you watch the weather as it does close when it rains! Also— bring a waterproof bag for your phone or other items as the water was up to my chest in spots and I’m 5’5”.

We hiked the narrows as a family. Kids as young as 2 years old. If you are in decent shape and have the appropriate gear (hiking shoes, walking poles, water & snacks) it’s a great time.
There are a few spots that the smaller children will need to be carried (due to depth of water or how quick it was flowing).
We saw some people without the appropriate gear or who were not in physical shape to hike that were struggling.
Plan accordingly and this is a must see spot. Beautiful views and a one of a kind hike.

We are hiking the narrows top down and read that we need to get our own transportation/ shuttle. How do we find a shuttle service that will take us up to Chamberlain ranch? There are 12 of us. Any recommendations from someone who has done this?
Do I need a wetsuit? I will be hiking the Narrows top down in a week (end of May). Water temp is going to be ~55F and airtemp ~85F. The park ranger was a little intense in their recommendation, suggesting a wetsuit and saying there have been a lot of search a rescues lately because people have not been prepared. However, pretty much all the other info I can find suggests that I don't need a wetsuit for these air/water temps. Thanks!

Hi Kevin: I would follow the advise of the Park Ranger. The Narrows can experiencing flooding in the spring. It can be quite dangerous to be in there during a storm. You would not be safe in water temps of 55 degrees without the proper equipment. I'd worry about being warm, dry and safe first. If you don't need the outwear recommended, you can always take it off once you get there, but if you don't have it to begin with, you will be in trouble. The boots, by the way, are one of the most important aspects of hiking in the Narrows. All of these items can be rented on-site through outfitters that the Park Rangers recommend. Hiking tomorrow and have rented the pants, shoes, etc. if we’re taking the tram into the park, do we wear the gear into the park, or change by the river? And do you recommend bringing a dry pair of shoes/socks to wear after if we’re not planning on doing any additional hiking after?

We wore the rented pants and shoes from our hotel to the park and on the tram. We brought dry shoes and socks and left them in the car in the visitor center parking lot.

Zion Outfitters and picked it up same day, wait time was bad, about 15-20 min. If you can get it the day before, that's even better.

I’m wondering what the path is like before you have to get in the water. Is it relatively flat, or full of huge rocks to navigate around and over? My husband and I both have some ankle issues that we like to kind of cater to, and wonder how much we’ll be able to enjoy of this hike. Thanks!

The path before you get to the water is not bad at all. It was relatively flat and paved. It isn't until you get down to the water that you'll have rocks to walk around.
You could look at some videos on YouTube to see the hike and path.

Heading straight to Zion from Vegas first thing on a Thursday in July, and staying at Zion Lodge for 2 nights (Th & Fri) in order to do Angels Landing and the Narrows. Any suggestions on times and order/which days we should do these two popular hikes? Thanks!

Definitely recommend doing the narrows first thing in the morning when is much less crowded. By the time we came back around 3:30pm, it was crazy how many people were there. It was so much nicer and quiet early in the AM.

Hi! Anyone know the recent status of the toxic bacteria levels in the Narrows? Is it safe to hike it? I was concerned when I saw the warnings about kids and pet not going in the Virginia River.

The Danger Advisory for the North Fork Virgin River has been downgraded to a Warning Advisory based on May 2021 monitoring results.
Search for "Toxic Cyanobacteria Bloom in the Virgin River and the Streams of Zion National Park" to see the latest status.

Hi guys. Going to Zion next week w a 10 & 14 yrs old. We were able to get a shuttle park tix but for the 11am time slot which is a bit late. We are short on time but were wondering if we could go do the narrows but kinda just walk in the water for awhile, wow at the surroundings and turn back around and get the shuttle back on that same stop? We arent hikers but based on reveiws and pics, looks like we would enjoy going through half a mile or so and just turning back so are committed and loose more than a couple hours there. Is that doable? allowed? not worth it?

Keep in mind that it is a 20 minute walk along the river before you reach the beginning of the Narrows. The scenery and experience gets better the further you go up the river and is the most spectacular once you reach Wall Street. If you're going to do it, I would do it right and allow at least 3 hours to walk in and out.

Has anyone hiked the Narrows in Zion lately? Is there great concern locally about the Toxic Cyanobacteria Bloom? How were the water levels bottom up to Big Spring? We are going in a few weeks for the first time. Do most people hiking it in early June not wear dry pants? Any and all thoughts / advice is appreciated! Thanks!

We hiked it in December. I know conditions change pretty quickly. I would check the NPS.gov site for alerts. I am unable to answer the question on June hiking. I just know we absolutely had to have them in December. The price for rental is reasonable thought. You also spend a lot of time in the shade, so it might feel colder because of that.

If you have an annual pass for the National Parks, do you need a separate permit/pass to hike the Narrows?

The annual pass gets you into Zion National Park. You do not need a separate permit for the Narrows UNLESS you plan to do more than the usual single day hike (bottom up). If you plan to do a two day hike (top down) then you definitely need a separate permit to stay overnight.
Please note that for the bottom up day hike you WILL NEED to get a timed shuttle ticket through the ZNP website- without this you will not be able to access the temple of Sinawava stop (where the Narrows hike starts) during the months of march through the Fall.
Plan early and ahead- the timed shuttle tickets go fast
