The museum is great! We had a tour with one of the guides. He didn't speak much English but he used an app to translate. It worked really well. We learned so much!

These two small museums are a must see for everyone who wants to dive into the history of Ometepe and Nicaragua.
According to our guide this is the biggest exhibition of archeological findings within the entire country (which comes as a complete surprise given the rural character of Ometepe and Moyogalpa on particular).
Entrance fee was USD 10 per person, English speaking guide included). And it was completely worth it. The museum consists of two parts (which can be visited on separate tickets too): the bigger one displays archeological findings and covers Mayan and Aztec influences on what is now Nicaragua. The smaller museum lays it's focus on the economy by exhibiting coins and bank notes from various centuries until present.
We had a private tour and not only that our guide was fluent in English we asked him loads of questions which he was willing to answer.
So, even if you don't see yourself as a history buff this museum is a welcoming change from nature, beach and volcanoes. It can easily be done in less than an hour.

I visited the museum after our tour guide took us there. It was $8 for internationals and $2 for nationals.
The tour was divided into two sections. The first section consisted of artifacts from the island over different periods.
The second section of the tour was about the various bank notes of Nicaragua.
I found the tour guide was very knowledgeable in the subjects of the tour. I really enjoy history and understanding various cultures and history. Unfortunately I just felt the tour was very rushed and lasted only for 20 minutes. I wasn't able to really absorb everything at my own pace. Was the tour worth $8? Not really. It was a big shame, because I was just not able to learn the history of Nicaragua.

If you are interested in archeology, this small museum is a must see. Staff of the hotel of the same name will guide you around.

We weren't sure whether to go in or not but were so pleased we did. There are two museums, one for pottery (which has examples that date back 3000 years) and one for the history of Nicaraguan money. Both were extremely interesting and we were taken round by an English speaking guide who definitely knew what he was talking about. We couldn't believe how interesting the history of money could be. We paid $8 each total to enter both museums which was very good value for money. Our guide was so good we gave him a $10 tip between the four of us and stayed for a coffee afterwards. Well worth a visit if you are passing and have an hour to spare.
