And now, an ode to Monsieur Francois Mitjavile and his winery Tertre Roteboeuf.

His wines are regarded by most as some of the best of the St. Emilion region (that’s on the right bank of the Bordeaux area). And for good reason.

While classification is a big thing here in Bordeaux (like, if you’re a Grand Cru Classe you are thought of as the top of the top, Grand Cru a rung below, and no classification, you’re considered table wine), Tertre Roteboeuf isn’t classified by choice. They do what they do and make what they make, period. Unapologetic.

The magic of his wines are the love and passion he pours into them. Unlike most wineries, including those in the US, he personally greeted us and spent the entire morning with us talking about his philosophy of wine making and living. Not so much on terroir this and grape that, but on the importance of trying to find the authenticity of the harvest which requires finding the balance between the sensuality of the wine and the stress that one needs to put the fruits through to reach that equilibrium.

It is thrilling to meet a person of Monsieur Mitjaville's quality. He is a man of ideas, knowledge, principles. I want him to be my new best friend.

He then took us straight to his cellar where we tasted from the barrel and then he invited us to select a bottle from his personal cellar (we went with a 1985, which had a great story about it) and we talked yet more on passion, love, and the soul of wine making.

If ever you have the opportunity to try one of his wines, know they are truly special and worth the cost. Craftsmen such as Monsieur Mitjavile are a rare and dying breed. His philosophy for winemaking is perhaps a great lesson for living, always strive for authenticity and balance.

Without question... best wine (and best wine tour). Ever.

Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf

Praising Tertre Roteboeuf wines...
This is a long time due review
One that I couldn't insert in our dear TA before, until know...

We (my son and his wife were traveling with us) were in a long time planned Gastrotour all over la France. After our stops in Champagne, Alsace, Bourgogne, Rhône and Provence, we arrived to a place that we haven't been before. A place that, after Burgundy, holds a very special spot in my wine lover's heart : Bordeaux Right Bank, with its two great wines region and its distinctive Vineyards, nearby the fantastic, very small-Medieval Village of Saint-Emilion. Two areas which produce some of the most sought-after wines in the world.

As wine collector, self- proclaimed wines connoisseur, my heart got faster as we felt closer to Saint-Emilion, a beautiful small town -with nothing much to do in it, but to enjoy its Vineyards, its Wines and its historic Chateau
Producers...which is like being in heavens for me and for my son.
Just with enough time to check-in at the beautiful, recently renovated, hotel
"Chateau Grand Barrail" , we jumped into our SUV for a short first ride around those beautiful and picturesque Vineyards of both :
Saint-Emilion and Pomerol Libournais areas, where you will find not only some of the very best, finest, delicate and "after-sought" wines of the world, but the most expensive ones, together with those from DRC in Bourgogne.
Day before we went to Left Bank (South) wines areas. As expected, even it holds the greatest First Grows Chateau with its better known classified wines (Lafite, Latour, Margaux, Haut Brion and Mouton) it was not as attractive in its surrounding images as the ones in the Right Bank with its beautiful and picturesque landscapes, mainly around Saint-Emilion.
The greater river in Bordeaux is Gironde. There are two smaller rivers, feeding it; the Dordogne and the Garonne. Looking from Bordeaux, facing west, toward the ocean, the "Left Bank" is south Garonne and Gironde rivers, and the "Right Bank" is north Dordogne and Gironde Rivers.

Most of the Red Bordeaux wines are made out of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grapes. In the Left Bank vineyards reigns Cabernet Sauvignon grape, while the Right Bank focus more on Merlot. Cabernet-based Left Bank wines tend to be more tannic, while the Merlot-based Right Bank wines has more restrained tannins.

It has been said that the wines from Bordeaux appeals to the "intellectual" side of us and those from Bourgogne appeals to the "Soul". I, as Bourgogne wine lover, believe in that "credo", but...BUT I always had found lots of similarities among my Bourgogne wines (over 2,000 bots in my cellar) and those from here, from Libournais areas, lets see:

The wines of Pomerol have a high composition of Merlot in their blends and are considered the gentlest, least tannic and acidic of Bordeaux wines. Similarly ; the wines from Saint-Emilion, south-east and much bigger than Pomerol, has great focus on Merlot on its blends. Trough the years we, among our International Wines & Food Society (IW&FS) members, had sustained a big deal of discussions regarding those assessments. I found all of them to be - in many ways- the truest ones, always following the Wines Credo :

I believe in wine...
I believe in its health-giving properties
I believe It is the most supreme beverage
All assessment are to be CORRECTLY and TRULY ;
A good wine should appeals to more than just the palate; it can be beautiful and give to the taster a feelingness of eager anticipation of tasting it.
It smell can be fragrant and evocative, preparing the mouth and setting all of the body senses in motion.
It should taste good and have a pleasing flavor, that should be not only intriguing, but delightful to both BODY AND MIND !

After all before phylogenic considerations, lets get back to Saint Emilion, to those memories of our visit to a very simple and lovely man; Francois Mitjavile, the owner of Chateau La Tertre Roteboeuf

Driving from Chateau Grand Barrail, we passed Saint Emilion, in a beautiful sunny day, to our appointment with Francois which we made via an exchange of emails with him. After driving around for sometime we finally got into this hidden -unpretentious - treasure place.
When we were getting in we noticed they were still right in the middle of their harvesting; we knew it was a very bad moment to visit him.
Francois, himself, received and greeted us in his perfect Spanish, as he knew we were coming from DR.
Even he told us that, due to its harvesting works, he could not dedicate us too much of his time and it would be a short visit...
But that was when we arrived...one hour later we were still there talking to this incredible eloquent man- exactly my age- dedicating his time to show us his beloved Vines and wines. We ended up tasting with him one of his recent Tertre Roteboeuf vintages and one of his 1989 Roc de Cambes, from nearby Cotes de Bourg wines area (northeast Saint Emilion)... a lovely wine !
Francois is the kind of person deeply involved not only in his wines, but being a very cultivated-wit person, he is passionate, as well, about all aspect of culture, art and life itself.
He explained to us about his origins and the origins and name of its Wines.
When we stepped with him, glass of wine in hands, overlooking his beloved Vineyards...his face and his eyes said everything and we understood him; he was a family man fully contented with life and his work in it.
His wines are not officially rated as per Saint-Emilion classifications, but he doesn't care about it. He nows better...
Tertre Roteboeuf, 20 years ago almost unknown, today is a Cult wine, highly appreciated among discerning wines connoisseurs and its prices had grown accordingly. The wine is made mostly based on Merlot grapes with a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon. When we asked him why he was harvesting so late (first week of October), he told us that he always try to pick his grapes as late as possible, from his low yield 13 plus acres and over 45 years old vines. Besides, he keeps -in the process - the skins of the grapes for a long time, aging up to 24 months in new 100% oaks barrels.

There are four levels in the St. Emilion classification of its wines; Premier Grand Cru Classés A and B, Grand Cru Classés and Grand Cru., being The Premier Grand Cru Classe Classification of St. Emilion are the top vineyards of St. Emilion. Into Premier Grand Cru Classe A you will find Chateau Ausone and Cheval Blanc (one of my very favorites), plus - later on were included- Angelus and Pavie...all of them with astronomic retail prices, but Francois doesn't care about his Tertre Roteboeuf prices, as said before :
He is content with his passionate work on his beloved vineyards !

If you are a wine lover and you can get an appointment with him...
....you will not regret it !
