We booked a 5-day endemic bird tour with Explora Ecotourism several months in advance. This was very easy to do and pay for from the UK using only email and WhatsApp.
Manny picked us up at our Santo Domingo hotel at 7.30 as agreed and whisked us off to the botanical gardens for some introductory birding. By the time we left the capital we already had several of the DR's endemic species under our belt.
The first night was spent at a lovely small rural hotel atop a low sea cliff near Barahona.
Before dawn the following morning, Efrain, our guide for the Sierra de Bahoruca part of the tour, picked us up and drove us up into the cloud forest. After a picnic breakfast provided by our hotel we birded a couple of trails looking for local specialities, getting good views of some and fleeting glimpses of others.
Late morning, after the heat of the day had diminished bird activity, we headed for lunch at 'the best sandwich bar in the DR'. We can't corroborate that claim, but the food was very good!
Then on to Duverge, on the North side of the mountains, our base for the next two nights. A little late afternoon birding grabbed us a couple more ticks, but the birds we'd hoped for around dusk failed to materialise. Here we stayed in a simple but adequate apartment, with all our food needs being satisfied by the restaurant in the centre of town. Good service and excellent food every time.
Day 3 started early, very early. We had a long, uncomfortable drive in the dark to get us high up in the mountains for a bird that only shows itself at dawn, the La Selle Thrush. We paused a couple of times on the way up to try and find nocturnal birds, and in the case of the endemic Nightjar, succeeded. Plus, we saw the Thrush, and added several more birds to our list.
Again late morning, once bird activity had decreased, we headed back down to rest through the hottest part of the day. It would have been nice to walk some of the descent - the road is so rough we could have walked some short sections faster than our 4x4 - but Efrain said it probably wasn't safe for us to do this as the road in places goes very near to the Haitian border. Mention must be made here to thank our driver and local guide Rafael who did such a fantastic job getting us up, and getting us back down.
Late afternoon we headed back out and birded beyond dusk, finishing with brilliant views of the rare Least Paraque in Efrain's spotlight.
Our final morning with Efrain was spent on the shore of Lake Enriquillo looking for waders and herons, and, at a second location, the endemic Palm Crow. After an early lunch, we headed back to the capital having seen all but 3 of the 30+ island endemic species, and we still had one day left.
We spent the last night of the tour in a comfortable hotel in the historic centre of the capital, a couple of minutes walk from the main square. Manny again picked us up at 7.30 (so time for some breakfast) and drove us to the edge of Los Haitises National Park to look for what may be the world's rarest Buteo, Ridgeway's Hawk. With the help of a local guide from the raptor group working with this species, a bird was located perching out in the open, giving superb views and great photo opportunities. A brilliant end to a rewarding 5 days.
Both Manny and Efrain are good company and great birding guides. They (and the local guides they work with at each location) not only know where to look, but seem able to spot things that we would never have noticed on our own. They always ensured we both had the best chances of seeing the birds, which did seem particularly skittish and elusive. And they took us to places we would never have been able to get to independently. Both had good English and were attentive hosts, ensuring that everything ran as planned.
We went to the DR to go to a relative's wedding, but this trip really put the icing on the cake!

We did a half-day birding tour and loved it! We saw so many birds, our guide was awesome and very knowledgeable, and it was an amazing way to see the natural side of the Dominican Republic. If you’re a birder or just love wildlife and being in nature, you will love this tour! I would definitely do another one if we ever go back.

We were picked up at our hotel by Kiko. He did a fabulous job showing us all the beautiful sites along the shore line that led up to Sanoa Island. We saw the turtles and lots of sting rays and the sky was filled with butterflies. All kinds. It was a full day and we are birders so we were able to get a lot of great pics. We went to a fishing village and relaxed and had lunch. It was nice to sit and talk with the local fishermen. I would do this excursion the next time I go. I highly recommend this adventure!

We spent two half days birding with Manny in completely different locations and enjoyed each enormously.
Our first outing was to the Santo Domingo Botanical Garden, an old, large and diverse expanse of greenery. We were very pleased to see as many lovely species as we did. In large part, the good sightings were a result of Manny having both a keen eye as well as a keen ear.
Our second outing was to the National Park of the East. It was exceptionally warm for this walk and what made it bearable were the very nice sightings we were having as well as Manny having brought along water for the 3 of us. Having a thirst quenching drink as you look out on the turquoise Caribbean and listen to the bird song around you is a pure delight.
In addition to the great birding; we were treated to very engaging narratives about the history of the DR and pointers on what to see, where to eat and what to do. Manny is not only a good bird guide, he is very good company.
My husband and I bird outside of the USA with some frequency and have liked all our guides. But there was a special connection with Manny that went beyond birding. It was a comradery based on a shared language and shared values. We hope to bird the DR again, and it will definitely be with Explora Ecotour.

Excellent opportunity to view endemic birds. Many is an experienced birder and speaks excellent English and is very personable. All communications prior to trip were clear and responses timely. He runs a well organized tour company. I would highly recommend this birding outing for anyone who is interested in Dominican Republic’s birds.

Explora Ecotour is the best tour company if you are a serious bird watcher. Although not widely known, the Dominican Republic has a large number of endemic species, some of which are quite spectacular. Manny Jiminez, president of the company, and his team have to be the best birders in the country. They can take you right to the birds - as if the birds are waiting for you.

Absolutely amazing tour! (We did this tour from Punta Cana.) Our guide/boat captain, Kiko, was probably the nicest person we met on our entire DR vacation. He was knowledgeable, extremely eager to please (most of the people we met in the tourism industry seemed to be quite indifferent to the wants/needs of tourists), and so friendly. This Saona Island tour is worth every dollar, starting with when we met Kiko at the dock area and he led us through the crowds of people waiting in the hot sun right to our private, shaded boat. We told him we wanted to focus on snorkeling, and he had us in the water (at a fantastic spot!) within minutes of getting on the boat. He tailored the entire trip to make sure we got as much snorkeling in as possible, and it was incredible. (One of my teenage sons was so impressed that he said it is the best tour he has ever been on. :-)) We saw turtles, rays, huge starfish, barracuda, and so so so much more. The island was quite picturesque. (Keep in mind there's a lot of sargassum seaweed there right now, as all over- didn't bother us at all.) The lunch was delicious and filling. (I don't think they knew what to give us, since we are vegetarians LOL; but the rice & beans, potatoes, salad, and pineapple, plus coffee, were just right). If you want loud music, drinking, partying, then this is not the tour for you; but we loved that Kiko went to great lengths to make sure we were AWAY from all of that, and could enjoy the serenity of the place itself. We greatly appreciated all the effort Kiko (and others I'm sure, behind the scenes) put in to make this tour one of the highlights of our entire DR vacation.

Manny was very responsive and booking was easy, no issues with booking or payment. Kiko was a GREAT guide-got us everywhere safely and showed us some beautiful places. Natural swimming pools, snorkeling-we saw turtles, stingray, and starfish in crystal clear starfish. The private tour allows you to make the day exactly what you want. Would def book again!

Big thanks to Manny for helping us arrange the tours to Saona Island and Los Haitises National Park.
If you're looking to get away from the crowds and see the beautiful nature of the country on your vacation, I highly recommend these folks. Kiko showed us an unforgettable time on our Saona Island trip, while Kelvin and our driver took great care of us at Los Haitises.
Word of advice. If y'all are planning on going to Los Haitises, plan for 2 trips or perhaps more; that park is way too big to see it all in one trip.
Next time we come back to the DR, we're 100% booking the same trips again. Thanks again for everything y'all!

Explora Ecotour is our go to tour guide company in the Dominican Republic. We've gone on many tours with them over the past 20 years, most recently to some of the most incredible places on the Northeast coast. The owner, Manny speaks fluent English and Spanish and knows the country inside and out.

My husband and I are coming to a resort in Puerto Plata (Playa Dorado) on Feb 20-Mar 6. We may be interested in booking a bird watching day trip. I saw on your website that pick up time is 5:30 AM. Will there be an opportunity to pick up food for the day, or would we need to do that in advance?

They provided us with lunch on both tours so it is likely included and they are very accommodating and offered to stop at gas stations so we could get snacks

Hello! We offer several great private nature tours from the Punta Cana area. However, we do offer tours to Salto Alto Waterfalls, but only from Santo Domingo, since those falls are located too far from Punta Cana. Please visit our website to see which tour options are available to you from the Punta Cana area. We hope to see you soon!

Hi there, I am a year 11 student from South Australia and am conducting an assignment based off of the Explora Ecotour company and would like to ask a few questions on your experience in the Dominican Republic.
- What was the day tour you partook in and was it a private or group tour?
- If a group tour, what was the maximum number of people allowed?
- What were the particular regulations suited for your tour in order to protect the natural environment if the area? This is in terms of behaviour e.g. not allowed to walk off the path etc.
- What cultural awareness (in terms of how to improve environment) did the guide teach you about the local area?
- Who are the host/local community?
- Do you know whether the company puts some of their earnings towards environment conservation?
- Do you know whether the company keeps some of their earnings and puts the rest towards helping the local community and their projects?
- Did you have a very memorable experience on their program?
- Did the guide inform you on how to preserve the local environment and raise awareness of environmental sensitivity?
- Did the company show recognize the rights and spiritual beliefs of the indigenous people in the community and work in partnership with them to create empowerment?
If you could answer these questions ASAP, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou, Savanna. :)

Sure thing, ill gladly help.
- It was a group tour, eventhough they do offer private tours and the last one i participated in, was septiember 28th, 2015.
- Maximum number of people is unknow, but in total we were around ten participants.
- Regulations were stricktly personal (sun blocker, hats etc.) but they did require a personal thermos, no paper napkins, no disposable cups, etc
- Local awareness, the importance of manglares, these are water plants, known for purifying fresh water and a high ratio of air cleansing.
- We visited the rural area of Montecristi, small local coast villages, near the border with Haiti.
- Since its a small family business, I cant confirm it, but they really raise awareness
- Do you know whether the company keeps some of their earnings and puts the rest towards helping the local community and their projects?
- Did you have a very memorable experience on their program?
Yes, very gratifying.
- Did the guide inform you on how to preserve the local environment and raise awareness of environmental sensitivity?
Yes, they are very professional about it.
- Did the company show recognize the rights and spiritual beliefs of the indigenous people in the community and work in partnership with them to create empowerment?
They require the services of the locals for food preparation and protection of the environment. In facebook they are always posting when the lobsters are multiplying, so you should not eat it in those months, as well as the conch, etc No trash in the beaches, no plastic bottles, etc.

we are looking for a private tour from Santiago to Cabarete for a party of 9 on Jan 17.
We arrive in Santiago late on Jan 16 and can check into our vacation home in Cabarete around 3pm on the 17th.
We were hoping to be picked up around 10am and to see sites around Santiago and around Cabarete with our final destination being our home in Cabarete.
If you don't service this part of DR, can you please make a recommendation for a tour operator who does? You have outstanding reviews and we'd like to go with a company as reputable as you.
thank you & happy new year.
