We were greeted by a polite young man who provided a brief orientation and spent a pleasant span of thirty minutes in the cathedral. The altar is beautiful and a reminder of the glory and richness of Puerto Rico. At the left end of the transept is the tomb of Ponce de Leon. Fans, discreetly swiveling, keep the place cool. It's undergoing necessary renovation, for which contributions are accepted, and one feels happy to give generously because of the welcoming nature of the place and its staff.

This is a small cathedral that houses the remains of Ponce de Leon. The artwork is beautiful. The cathedral is welcoming. There are other religious figures. It is the oldest cathedral in San Juan. Worth a visit.

Amazing church to visit. Wanted to light a candle for peace but wasn't sure how to. We went inside not knowing it was THE cathedral. No wonder it was so beautifully adorned with frescos, statues and plaster relief. Nice person at the door offered some holy water for me since the stoup/basin was empty. Glad we wandered into it.

Old San Juan's venerated cathedral is Puerto Rico's grandest religious building, and one of its most important, and San Juan Bautista is the seat of the Archdiocese of Puerto Rico. it's a can't-miss historic landmark in the heart of the old city
The history of the church dates to 1521 and the earliest beginnings of the Spanish colonization of the island. The building you see today wasn't the original church, which was demolished by a hurricane. The current structure dates to 1540.
Fact: It's also the second oldest church in the Western Hemisphere, and the oldest church on U.S. soil.
Location: The church is located at Calle del Cristo, just across from the beautiful El Convento Hotel.

This was literally steps away from our villa. We could see it from our roof top terrace. Still in full service and has been maintained so well. Lovely stop.

Find a guidebook or hire a knowledgable local tour guide because there is zero information (at least in English) for visitors to the cathedral. Also, look for the Ponce de Leon tomb against the north wall. The cathedral is free, which is nice.

This is a simple but beautiful church. The exterior is very simple and the interior is the same, but amazing art is hanging on almost every wall. I wedding party was rehearsing while I was there so I did my best to stay out of the way. I did find the tomb of Juan Ponce de Leon which was kind of cool. Very well maintained.

This is by far the oldest church under U.S. jurisdiction, nearly as old as some of the famous churches in Europe. It is worth seeing for its history. You just don't see 500-year-old churches on the mainland.
It is, however, a surprisingly small church (especially for a cathedral) and not a particularly beautiful church (especially for one called a basilica). It was not a place where I marveled at the architecture or artwork. I was also a bit put off by a rather rude guard at the entrance. He seemed anything but welcoming to visitors.

This is a beautiful church with so much history inside, including the burial location of Ponce De Leon. We didn’t realize it was the second oldest cathedral in the Americas, which is amazing. This is a nice quick stop when you’re downtown.

El Covento requires two nights. Hotel Milano is nice and others that aren’t chains. It’s beautiful, good security and amazing food.

Masses are said in both Spanish and English at different times - call or email the Cathedral and they can give you the schedule for any particular day. The streets in Old San Juan are very small and there is virtually no "street' parking anywhere nearby. However, Hotel El Convento has a valet parking lot adjacent to the Cathedral if you don't mind paying. Best, however, is to use the City of San Juan's free trolley service - it stops just two blocks from the Cathedral and runs every 15 minutes during the day.

Regulary on a Saturday the mass is at 7:00 pm.
But since its a Christmas mass it might be at another time.
You may call to phone 787 722 0861 and asked them.

Hi. Usually, Saturday Mass is 7:00 p.m., and Sunday Masses are at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. but it might be different on Christmas.

There is no specified dress code; However, since it is a place of prayer and worship for some visitors, I would dress as I would if going to a causual lunch.
