This is a most amazing place. If you are looking for comfy beach chairs and all the creature comforts of a vacation resort, this is not it. If you want to experience the land, the beach, the sea...just as it IS...this is the place. We took our rental Jeep back the windy road and spread our towels under the coconut trees and enjoyed a beach without another human in sight or hearing. Just us and Mother Nature. It is a top ten highlight of my life, truly. Just the most natural and peaceful setting.

Rent a golf cart/ car/ scooter, pack a cooler and enjoy. Tons of little beaches and places to spread out. Count the wild horses on your way out, I lost count around 30. Worth the trip!

Compared to the rest of the island, the roads in the refuge were wider, and had fewer potholes. The beaches were still covered in lots of seaweed, and there were many warning signs to stay on the trails/roads, d/t unexploded ordnance, left over from US military.

Very pretty beaches with hardly anyone on them exist here! So quiet - no loud music playing! A change from the main island. However, a jeep is a must to get to them, especially, our favorite, Green Beach on the west side. I can't believe the government doesn't take better care of these roads. I've heard some car rental companies won't allow people to drive the 1.7 miles down to green beach and I can understand why. If you can't drive it, hike it - you won't regret it. La Chiva (on the east side) gets more attention, but we thought green beach was prettier, had good shade trees, and snorkeling was top notch. We checked out all the beaches on both sides of the Refuge. At Green beach, we swam with fish, puffer fish, eels, lots of turtles, sting rays, etc. We parked a couple spots to the right of where the beach sign and gazebo are and swam out to the buoys and to the left of them. There are reefs all around them out there and on your way out to them. We did see one huge spotted sting ray at La Chiva, but it was so fast, we didn't get a picture.

We used a UTV to get to La Chiva in the park - bumpy in spots yes, but not awful, and about 15 minutes drive with that vehicle. Had a gorgeous beach to ourselves with a covered table to set our things at. Saw only a handful of people all day, amidst miles of beaches. Swimming was awesome - warm, clear water. We set up around spot 13. The snorkeling in the visible coral just off shore was amazing - there was a turtle, an octopus, and many colorful fish, plus schools of all sorts. There were quite a few bees there, so be aware if you are allergic. I don't think there are any facilities so bring your own everything.

Birds, good birding action. This refuge had amazing beaches, yes, amazing, but also…well, darn good wildlife to see!

we loved exploring all the amazing beaches in the reserve. So many to choose from. take the time to beach hop some are down a beaten path,some you might have to walk a path into, some have bathrooms most do not. Go and explore and please don't try to change them into all the other beaches in the world...they are still pristine...go enjoy and preserve.

Great sandy beach very close as the crow flies but far because it takes forever to go the 4+ miles on very bumpy, potholed road,
Do not take a golf cart there (even though lots do, it’s pretty dangerous and hot!).
The beach has great snorkeling and you can see giant turtles and pretty fish near the huge wreck of something (the wreck is on land but very near the old broken up pier).

Hubby and I visited La Chiva and Playa Caracas (both reviewed separately) in Vieques National Wildlife Refuge in late November with our dog. We found the snorkeling to be better at Playa Caracas but it had more people than La Chiva (which is much further down). The park closes at 6pm and the gate appears to close automatically so don’t be late! There were many signs along the way indicating the beach locations and warnings/information. We didn’t have any trouble finding the beaches. The road got rough after the pavement ended but was fine with a jeep. There were many garbage cans along the road which helps contribute to the overall cleanliness of the park. We didn’t see many animals along the way other than lizards. Take food/drink with you. Overall, a pleasant way to spend the day and we hope to return one day to explore the other beaches.

No wonder they only rent SUV 4WD vehicles! Tense driving:
he dirt roads need many repairs due to gigantic potholes. We drove 15 mph most of the time. But the beaches! Wow! Thank you, US Military, for rehabilitating this beautiful area!! Find your favorite private beach on the E. side, and snorkeling on the W side. Recommended!

How can I get from San Juan to Vieques? Something that is cheap . Is there a boat or ferry? Pls help

Hi, you can go to Ceiba and use the ferry there to go to Vieques. Terminal de Carros Públicos in rio piedras will offer you a ride there pretty cheap.
