Sun is the best guide one could ask for this type of tour. Having he been raised in Plymouth (the buried capital after the volcano explosion) he is able to explain with details what it used to every single building that is mow partially covered by ashes. He can relate his own personal experience and identify what once used to be a very thriving Caribbean capital. Furthermore, if you are a Beatles, Police, Rolling Stones fan you would be glad to know that his family helped built the museum-bar Hilltop Cafe near Gingerbread Hill. Beyond that, Sum has lived all his life in Montserrat so he knows the hidden spots and best places to eat and have drink. Highly recommended.

We can only reiterate what others have already said: Sun's tour is a comprhensive introduction to Montserrat, present and historically, and well worth doing even if you plan to explore further (or again) on your own. As passengers you have the full benefit of “gazing around” while Sun navigates the twists and turns on the narrow, steep roads with aplomb while also keeping up a running commentary with good cheer and humorous anecdotes. Sun is very accommodating; willing to linger (or skip) where you wish rather than keeping to a rigid schedule - except where that schedule includes Plymouth (the exclusion zone) and coordination with others is required for that timing. While he is a most personable guide, he cannot add hours to his day long tour so if you choose to spend a lot of time in one area, or, as we did, ask for a “quick look” at something not really part of the tour, you may find you have less time for some other fascinating stop. A characteristic of a good guide that Sun demonstrates is his patience in answering so many questions that he has probably answered mutitudinous times before. His willingness to answer questions had us commenting, even after the tour, “I wish I had thought to ask Sun about that”. If, besides seeing the sites and sights, you want to be informed, we highly recommend Sun’s Montserrat Island Tours.

Sun is a wealth of information about Montserrat. His tour was most enlightening and filled with little known facts about the village that was once his home. He won't disappoint and the tour was well worth the time and $$.

I highly recommend this tour. Sun is an informative and entertaining guide and covered everything I wanted to see and more, providing interesting background and helping me better understand what the island was like at different points of history right up to the present day - including on migration, battles, the economy, social issues, music, nature and of course the impacts of the volcano. He was also kind, flexible to my interests/requests and good company.

Sunny provides a wonderful tour of a mystical island. He’s incredible prompt and professional - he was there before we arrived and patiently waited for our COVID test per Montserrat protocol. He provided drinks and at drop off made sure everything was ok with our flight check in (we day tripped from Antigua).
Once on tour, he took us to view points, historical sites, exclusion zone and more and gave us good knowledge as well.
We would 100% recommend this tour.

Sunny took us out to Plymouth and the sight of the volcano, with a few stops along the way. Great place for lunch, great 'hilltop cafe ' visit You won't be dissapointed

Short version: We would do it all again! Enjoyable day excursion with engaging guide who shares wealth of knowledge about the island and it’s dramatic history. Picked us up and dropped us off at our doorstep! Very attune to interests of his customers. Nice job weaving humor and technology into the guided tour! Just do it! It’s a great way to see/learn plenty and get an idea of what you might want to explore more on your own afterwards.

We booked this tour ahead of our cruise instead on a more expensive excursion from the ship (Windstar Star Pride) and were extremely glad we did. Sun is a great guide, knows the island well and has connections you wouldn’t get with any other tour. Besides seeing the buried city as everyone wants to we were treated to his parents visitor center/coffee house and a tour and video at the Monserrat Volcano Observation center. The video was made by Sun’s father and Sun helped in post production. It has been used by National Geographic and is an amazing thing to see. Someone else on the island reported while everyone else was running away from the exploding volcano he was running toward it.
The coffee shop is run as a non profit. Sun’s dad, David Lea, gives a tour of not only volcano information and his baseball memories (Toledo Mudhens) but extensive history and memorabilia of Air Studios Monserrat where 76 albums were recorded by virtually every superstar from the late 1970s to 1980s. The owner of the studio was Sir George Martin who produced the Beatles. One wall of the coffee shop is covered with album covers and there is a stack of those that wouldn’t fit. Across the room are two tables from the studio covered under glass with pictures of all the greats who recorded there.
We also saw Paul McCartney’s and George Martin’s homes on the island. The latter is where the studio was and is now used as a bed and breakfast.
These are just the highlights of a great 6 hour tour. By all means take this tour if you can! Don’t be scared off by warnings from the cruise excursion people about being asked for more money half way through. Sun is a great guide.

It's truly the best tour experience I've ever had (I'm over 45yrs, to provide some context). I can't say enough amazing things about the experience. It was educational largely because the guide (Sun) is such an amazing, warm and knowledgeable person. I was amazed at how drawn in I was throughout the entire tour. His depth of knowledge is remarkable. And he's incredibly accommodating. We asked about places where we might find local produce...instead of recommending, Sun took us there to shop during the tour. We mentioned at the start that we might not be able to do the entire tour because one of our kids needs his nap...Sun's response..."No problem. Whenever nap time surfaces, I'll drop you home and we can resume when they wake." The learning during the tour was great, observing Sun answer question after question with such detail, his friendliness and warmth, and his professionalism was awesome. Although you're not reminded of the "professionalism" becasue within minutes of getting into his pristine van, it feels like you're reconnecting with an old friend. Sun is a master at his craft. Visit the Hilltop Coffee House and you'll meet Sun's Dad David, at which point you'll see where Sun get's his talent for communicating and captivating an audience. Well done Sun...my family and I thank you sincerely for the experience you delivered. Blessings to you and your family!

It might be difficult. We were a group of 4 and Sunny has a van to take you around, believe it seats 6 or 7. I would definitely email them to discuss your party's arrangements.

We are a group of 8 people visiting Montserrat on March 3rd. We would like to book a private tour which includes the usual stops, as well as some time on one of the volcanic beaches (if that is possible). Is that something you can do,and what would the cost be?

We are planning to visit Montserrat on Tuesday in January 2020 - fly in at 9:30AM and leave on the flight at 16:30PM - which tours are available for this "short" period of time? I understand it's Antigua and Montserrat Day Adventure for sure but what about the other ones? I understand the time constraint thus I want to make sure I am not booking for something we won't be able to accommodate the time :) is the "shore excursion" or "plymouth excursion" available to us as well or since such a short time the Day Adventure is it?

Hi, Sorry I am just seeing these questions. There is a 1/2 tour that last about 3 hours and focuses on the South of the island where the volcano has affected Montserrat the most. It is called the tour of Lost Dreams. You can see it on our web site.

We are planning a nostalgia trip to Montserrat this March (probably March 15), having stayed numerous times between 1967 honeymoon and last visit in 1980. There are various places we would like to see - the old airport from the “new road” from St John, Woodlands Bay, Vue Pointe hotel (lunch maybe) and to see my parents house above, Plymouth incl war memorial clock, jetty, cathedral and jail, St George’s Hill and maybe Air Studios. Is this going to be possible?

Plymouth is under 20 to 50 feet of ash , we went on a tour with Sunny from monserrat tours as you need a special permit to visit the exclusion zone. The war memorial is now completely covered, it's possible to get to the jetty .Cathedral is covered and top of jail is still visible.Only 3rd storey buildings are visible . Old airport is just metal girders everything else gone. Air studios is closed but a friend drove there climbed the small fence and went inside for a nosy around. Hope this helps..contact sunny by email he can give you specific details.

The cost of the ferry is not included. I recommend booking with the ferry at thier web-site. there you will find all their info. It is also far more painless when you go to check in at the ferry if the ticket was already purchased and all the necessary info already put into the system :)

We flew to montserrat and those cost were not part of the tour. You have to make your way to the island. That said Sunny met us at our hotel so imagine you can arrange for him to pick you up at the dock.
