This little gem has a variety of items of interest for history buffs. Volunteer Tom explained some of the displays and urged us to take our time wandering through the room. There is a relatively new exhibit of a tribute to World War I veterans from the Bahamas. Tom gave us ideas about what to see next in Nassau, and we are glad we took his advice.

Like other reboot here this was a bit of a chance find. Having visited the Queens Staircase we saw the museum and actually went in to ask about the slavery museum which my partner had noticed on the way in to Nassau. Tom Wardle was the volunteer on duty and he was so engaging we stayed to tour the small museum whilst he regaled us with lots of interest historical and cultural information. Well worth an hour of your time and $5

We saw the Bahamas Historical Society on Tripadvisor and were interested in learning a more comprehensive history of the Bahamas and understand more about the culture and people here. We were the only ones there and Andrea gave us an incredibly informative and interesting tour of the Society's small collections. She was very knowledgeable and friendly and made our visit memorable and engaging!

We were fortunate to arrive at the same time as the BHS's director, a charming, engaging and very knowledgeable guide to the collection and Bahamian history. I doubt we would have been able to get such an in-depth introduction to the people and places by simply viewing the exhibits (although many of them are very informative). Still, I wholeheartedly recommend a visit to anyone interested in learning about the Bahamas, including the connections with the US over the centuries. We spent about an hour there and learned a lot.

Having been to Nassau more times than I would care to admit, none of the ship’s tours were appealing, so I decided to do a walking tour with 2 goals in mind: to get to Queen Victoria’s staircase and to find some conch fritters. On my way back from the stairs, I saw a museum I had never seen in all of my visits, The Bahamas Historical Society and Museum.
We were greeted at the door by three lovely ladies, including Andrea Major, president of the museum. I paid my $3 admission fee and was treated to a brief but impressive oral and visual history of the islands.
The colonial-style building was much larger inside than it looked. The museum was great source of information without being overbearing. In addition to the oral histories, there is a large collection of artifacts (including some pre-Columbian items), sections representing different eras in Bahamian development, and cultural information.
Please take special note of the large displays of watercolors by a local artist. The illustrations are entertaining, vivid and beautiful!

Though small, the Historical Society has a wealth of well-presented information about the history of the Bahamas -- very even-handed presentation that doesn't white-wash (no pun intended) the role and effects of European colonization. The BHS ladies running the operation are welcoming, knowledgeable, and caring. We spent a very worthwhile and enjoyable hour.

I was in Nassau as part of a NCL Cruise, and having been to this island a few times I was looking to do something new/non-trip excursion.
My intent was to walk to the Queen's Staircase and then to the John Whatley Distillery (which I did).
On the way to the Queen's Staircase I saw the Bahamas Historical Society & Museum and I decided for a $3 admission fee to check it out.
For full disclosure, I am very interested in learning about the history and culture of places I travel too, and I also love to go to museums whenever I can, so this had a special pull for me.
The "tour" started with a 5-ish minute talk about the museum, and what would be seen.
From them it was an on-your-own thing and you could go at your own pace and ask questions along the way.
There were 3 docents when I was there, including the President Andrea who were SUPER knowledgeable and were more than willing to answer all of my questions.
I spent a little more than an hour there, and wished I had more time, but the rest of my "getting lost" needed to continue before I had to be back on my cruise.
I will 100% go back as I had way more questions, and I genuinely enjoyed the time Andrea gave me, not only about what was in the Museum, but the Bahamas in general.
I can't think of any better way, or for any better price, to learn about the Bahamas...in fact, I felt guilty having only paid $3 to enter so I made an additional donation on my way out.
If you are looking for some way to see Nassau without spending a tremendous amount of money, and also learning something along the way, this is the thing for you.

Like most museums this one had quite a few very local artifacts. The docents welcomed us and shared their wisdom to get us started. There was a watercolor series which documented and summarized the history by a local artist. The history began with a display of Lucayan(the indigenous people) items and moved onto the role of Christopher Columbus. They steadfastly declare Columbus did not "discover" the islands. He actually got lost in the islands; they further stated there was no way he could discover something that was already inhabited. This sounds like the same viewpoint of the American Indians. We viewed government, household, medicinal, and societal artifacts. It would really be great for a benefactor to help the Historical Society develop a series of more permanent exhibits using their artifacts in an updated manner.

We stumbled across this little museum. Staffed by knowledgeable and very friendly staff. Full of interesting artefacts. They do talks in an evening as well. Would recommend spending a few hours.

My wife and I visited this small museum on our honeymoon last week. We planned a self guided walking tour of downtown that started at Fort Fincastle. From the Fort we walked down the Queen's Staircase which leads you directly down the street to this quaint little museum. The individuals who guided us through the artifacts and information on display possessed a great deal of passion for their Bahamian history and culture. This made the visit much more enjoyable and allowed us the opportunity to fully understand the exhibits as we were exploring them. I would say this is a must visit location if you are interested in the history of The Bahamas dating to the Lucayan peoples, and are looking for an option away from the more traditional tourist options.
