Beautiful building that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s huge. All that space and 95% of the doors are locked. There were a few small exhibits in the rooms that weren’t locked. Then there are the Orozco murals. I wonder if he was as surprised by his success as I am, lol, because they look like they were done by a 10 year old. 80 pesos and definitely not worth it. I love museums and I’ve never been so disappointed. You need maybe 30 minutes to see it, and that’s just because it’s so large so you need time to move around. Otherwise you’d be in and out in 10 minutes.

The building itself is spectacular. It is quite large and has many courtyards. There were also more closed and locked doors than open ones with exhibits.
This may be an interesting tour if you speak Spanish but for us Canadians, it was extremely boring. We did understand some of the problems that artists were having during that specific time. We did see some amazing art. However, it could have been much more interesting had we been told more of the history of the building. It was the largest orphanage in all of Mexico at one time. We did not see one word that told of this and found online that hundreds of children were housed, fed and cared for by nuns. Some people have fond memories of this time.
When the orphanage closed, what happened to all those children?
We left with many questions but found no one who could tell us the basics in English.

The local English speaking guide was excellent! Enthusiastic and extremely knowledgeable about the murals of Orozco. We learned a lot about that fascinating man and his displayed work. The Gift shop also had some interesting items...

The murals were exceptional but we also enjoyed walking through and seeing the other exhibits. A bit of modern art in the wings. The main mural had an interactive filter on instagram that was fun.

We visited especially to see the exhibition of Chucho Reyes Ferreira’s paintings. The exhibition is extraordinarily well-placed with many works, well-lit, well-marked and very well-organized.
It was a pleasure to see so many unpublished or very little known drawings and pictures of this great painter tapatio.

One place that deserves to be highlighted in Guadalajara is the Hospicio Cabañas, a World Heritage Site since 1997, which was one of Top-rated Orphanages in Latin America. This neoclassical building, built between 1801 and 1810, housed orphaned, elderly and homeless children for more than a century until it was used as a barracks during the War of Independence. It currently operates as a museum showing the murals of renowned artist José Clemente Orozco, as well as hosting exhibitions and a good number of cultural activities.
Because to visit Guadalajara is to visit the peak works of Orozco in three emblematic buildings: 1) the frescoes in the Cabañas Cultural Institute, with a total of 57 frescoes and which constitutes the true “Sistine Chapel” of the muralism of the city and perhaps of the country (with permission of the Old College of San Ildefonso of Mexico City); 2) the murals of the Government Palace that are two: one
located on the stair climb, the mural "The people and their leaders", and the other in the Chamber of Deputies; 3) the mural of the Paraninfo of the University, divided into two parts: “The Creator and Rebel Man” at the top and “The People and Their False Leaders” at the front of the room.

Beautiful experience both for the architectural quality of the complex, and especially for the murals of Orozco that are among the cornerstones of Mexican pictorial art of all time. But the added factor is the guided tour service included in the entrance ticket, in Spanish or English, run by trained and professional museum guides, which make the experience even more appreciated. Well done!

It's a very nice place! I was amazed at everything I saw.
I don't know if the place should be open but there were some areas that were closed and didn't give some reason. I liked that there was even like a Cinematheque, I had no chance to go. The cost to access is very economical, if I remember correctly there is promotion for being Mexican, student, teacher or senior citizen.

Tuesday thru Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM, Central. There is a $70 MXP fee, however on Tuesdays, there is no cost. This is their official webpage: hospiciocabanas.jalisco.gob.mx
