Cesar cancelled our tour due to a COVID lockdown in Guadalajara. That's understandable. The problem is the phone number provided in our confirmation was for a tour operator in a different state of Mexico who says he has nothing to do with the GDL food tour. Cesar would not respond to our multiple emails and phone calls for a refund. Unfortuntately we will need to dispute with American Express. If you're willing to take this risk, the tour otherwise looks great. It's a shame he holds on to your money when he shouldn't. We cannot recommend.

I can not recommend this tour enough! I have done a lot of eating/culture tours around the world and this by far was my favorite! Amala is passionate about both food and history. Not only Tlaquepaque’s, - but Jalisco as a state - and Mexico as a country. She’s extremely knowledgable about everything - from the ingredients, to the production of the ingredients, to the way they are cooked to make the dish. And she’s also very considerate and kind and generally, lovely to talk to.
Unfortunately because of the pandemic, I was her first client since March. I also was the only one on the tour. Never have I been so lucky to get so much personal attention from an expert of cuisine and tradition!
If you’re worried about health and safety because of the pandemic - do not worry. Amala always wore a N95 mask throghout, gave me hand sanitizer (lavender-based) so it smelled delicious and there were multiple temperature checks through Tlaquepaque. There were even several stations throughout Tlaquepaque that misted sanitizer and alcohol on you!
Every food and drink item was delicious, fresh and story fully explained. You really get the best of the best dishes in Tlaquepaque at all the best restaurants and food stalls and tasting rooms. You also feel the cultural, history and pride behind every dish.
Amala has planned this tour so well and much thought has gone into it. You start in the market, where Amala shows you and goes through all the ingredients that will make up the dishes you’ll be tasting - the beans, the rice, the chilies, the sugar, the fruit, the vegetables, the bread - these are all Tlaquepaque’s and Jalisco’s specialties. You whet up so much of an appetite that it makes all the dishes so satisfying - then visit a variety of beautiful restaurants, food stalls and tasting rooms. You also visit a museum. The drinks and food are well spaced out. Worst case, I was able to pack up one of my dishes and I ate it for dinner!
Cazuela is my new favorite drink!! Birria tacos are now my favorite tacos! - Both are native to the state of Jaslico.
I give this tour 100 out of 5 stars :) Thanks for having me Amala!

Cesar was a great guide but I wished he would have given us a bit more information about the food we were eating as well as the time to enjoy it. I am a local resident and was delighted to discover new restaurants.

This tour has it all. You get to try different foods from various restaurants around the area. As you walk to different restaurants in the city the guide gives you good info about the city and the different places around town. You also have plenty of opportunities to take pics on tour in view points you might not otherwise have an opportunity on your own. I’d recommend this tour.

El recorrido es bastante entretenido y dinamico, por parte de los oradores mucho respeto y dedicación...

Creí que en general es bueno, pero particularmente no me gustó, todo fue tan rápido que no te dejaban degustar lo suficiente, además combinaban postres entre platillo fuertes, no había un orden entonces al consumir un platillo salado y luego uno dulce no era de lo mejor, al final se sirvieron los platillos más pesados y más ricos pero como ya era suficiente comida uno ya no estaba dispuesto a comerlos

Cesar was an excellent tour guide and knows a lot about Guadalajara's food scene. He introduced me to many tasty dishes.

You could learn anything from history of a place to the nitty gritty of a food dish on this tour. We were shown the many historical parts of the city alongside traditional regional dishes. This food tour is an excellent mix of walking, dish portion sizes, and exploring features of the city. The local guide was very respectful of our food allergies (we had a lactose intolerant person), and enjoyed sharing cultural aspects of his city. I would recommend doing this tour at the beginning of your stay, because it gives you a great lay of the land and introduction to Guadalajara.
