The cemetery is a quiet place to wander and learn a little about the people of Oaxaca. There are beautiful covered hallways with big arches to look through into the cemetery. it was a photographer's dream! We went in the morning and got there when it said it was open. We found only one gait open and an attendant let us in. On I think the street was called Alphonse, a few blocks toward the Centro was a very nice and good restaurant called Mi Sal.

Oaxaca people take care of their dead so it is forbidden to enter the cemetery due the Corona epedemic.
I first thought the guard at the gate made a joke but this story was true. The place is closed.
May the rest in peace and without Covid.

This cemetery is really fascinating to walk through with ornate and extremely varied burial sites and monuments. Quiet fascinating. Up a gradual hill to get to, easy walk back to central.

Our small Day of the Dead tour group went to this cemetery to see the interesting grave markers, and also decorate the grave of a forgotten person with offerings of flowers, peanuts, fruit, mescal, a bottle of beer, a paper skeleton and pan de muerto. The cemetery was established in 1829 to accommodate large numbers of people who died in a cholera epidemic. Today there are elaborate grave monuments, shrines, and niche burials in the walls of a colonnade surrounding the camposanto.

I walked over on my next to last day. I thought it was beautiful and sad. It was still decorated from day of the dead so I was able to take some pictures of the decorated graves.

It's kind of funny when you think about doing a review for a cemetery as an attraction lol. but here we are. We went to Oaxaca specially for this occasion and visit the old traditions that are very well alive here. We visited the cemetery three times. Once on the 31st October and on this day they had a band playing on the center of the San Miguel Cemetery with a big stage and lights like a concert and the crypt niches are lit with candles. The rest of the cemetery is almost as normal but then on the 1st of November at night all the cemetery comes alive with all kinds of candles and lights and there is a lot of people putting candles and flowers on the tombs and by the 2nd of November family members come to visit the graves during the day and have a picnic right on top of the tombs and they sit around eating drinking and even some are cooking right besides the tombs. It really is a lovely gesture from the surviving family members to go all out and revisit their lost ones, on this day though the vibe is very family oriented and as a tourist we felt a little awkward strolling around during this very private affair so we went out to the nearby market and bought a bunch of flowers and adorn some of the tombs that nobody for some reason were with out flowers so we kind of blended in with the locals. I guess if you are a tourist this is the time to visit

A restored French thread weaving factory built in the 19th century, with beautiful buildings and landscaping and fine exhibitions of art. Located only two blocks away, is the workshop where handmade paper is used to create affordable art using the designs of Maestro Francisco Toledo, who iniciated the restoration of the factory.
