El Santuario de Atotonilco, ubicado en Guanajuato, México, es un hermoso ejemplo de la arquitectura barroca mexicana y una muestra de la influencia europea en la región. Conocido como la "Capilla Sixtina mexicana", Atotonilco se ha convertido en un lugar de peregrinación para miles de devotos cristianos, a los que atraen sus famosas pinturas murales y murales de estuco así como su significado histórico. Las pinturas son una variedad de escenas inspiradas en el Nuevo Testamento, que incluyen desde el nacimiento de Jesús hasta su madre María venerada por los ángeles. La impresionante arquitectura del santuario, que cuenta con cúpulas doradas y un bello jardín al aire libre, también es digna de admirar. The paintings are intricate. Would say it's worth a visit if you're nearby. Though maybe not a destination in an of itself if you're not looking specifically to view a church.

This is a tiny town and off the beaten path--however, if you are anywhere in the vicinty, don't miss it! Absolutely beautiful--amazing ceiling artwork.

Amazing Church

Today we visited the village of Atotonilco to see a parish church that is reputed to be the Sistine Chapel of Mexico and a designated World Heritage site. In Spanish, it is named Santuario de Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, but is also known as Santuario de Dios y de la Patria. Having seen the original Sistine Chapel in Italy and the Sistine Chapel of Spain, Valencia, we had to complete the trifecta.
The church comes close to warranting its exalted reputation. The interiors of the main church and its side chapels have murals and oil paintings on the walls and ceilings and ornately decorated statuary positioned in small depressions in the walls. The altars were spectacular in their depiction of the major events in the life of Jesus, particularly the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. It was well worth the time to get there.

On a group tour, we stopped here. Never heard of it before. Spectacular! Must see! A hidden gem! I've been to the Sistine Chapel and this place is a close second. Wish we could have spent more time there.

Conozco el Santuario hace varios años, estaba en mal estado, en esta última visita vimos con agrado que le han dado mantenimiento espero lo sigan cuidando porque es único en México, con una gran historia tanto por sus pinturas, como por el acontecimiento al inicio de la Independencia, pués de ahí tomo Dn. Miguel Hidalgo el estandarte de la Virgen que lo acompaño

Es un lugar con gran historia por su antigüedad y sus obras pinturas y esculturas antiquísimas usadas para evangelizar.
Vale la pena llegar temprano. Cierran a las 4:30 pm

Terrible experiencia. Llegamos al santuario y nos abordó un supuesto guía que contratamos, el recorrido duro aprox 40 min y al salir nos dimos cuenta que habían vaciado mi camioneta. Se llevaron todas nuestras pertenencias, una muy triste experiencia. Al querer denunciar no había con quien, las monjas dicen no haber visto ni escuchado nada. Si se dan cuenta nos estacionamos junto a la iglesia fuera de un restaurante de las monjas a pleno 15:00 hrs, abierto dando servicio. Llegaban y llegaban vans de turistas, y ni así se detienen los ladrones. Ningún policía al pendiente ni disponible para ayudar.
La capilla hermosa, pero a costa de tu seguridad no es prudente visitarla.
La gente nos advirtió que siquiera no se llevaron la camioneta, por qué esos robos son muy frecuentes ahí. Aún así, sin autoridad para apoyar.
Realmente recomiendo no asistir.
Unas vacaciones que terminaron en una terrible experiencia.
