the owner loves masks and has personally collected them all from natives using them in local ceremonies. he has done research on each on and has documentation on them in the museum. Interesting and well worth seeing.

Casa de la Cuesta is not only a fantastic mask museum, featuring an astounding collection of masks worn in ceremonies of indigenous people all over Mexico. It is also a B and B with an awesome collection of the highest quality folk art in every room and public space. And the quirky proprietors (long-time ex-pats) are full of interesting information about their collections, their artists, events places to go in San Miguel. A must-see, in my opinion. And a beautiful place to stay.

Had the pleasure of attending a Day of the dead lecture here including a tour of the mask museum. Both were fantastic! Incredible curated collection of masks from all over Mexico. A must visit!

Taxi driver asked if we could come in. Nope, APPOINTMENT only. This place is off the beaten path. Looked not as safe as other neighborhoods. Asked taxi driver to take is to the Hardin instead. He was not friendly after driving us way out here. Then he charged us $150. !!!!!! So if you really want to see this place, have a good phone plan, my international didn't work there, don't go in that neighborhood alone, and talk to your taxi driver about how to get another taxi when you are done because I didn't see any other taxis in that area.

Hundreds of "danced" masks (meaning worn/used for a festival. Bill the owner is very well versed on the usage of masks and there are masks from all over Mexico.

This collection has been lovingly put together by the owner of the Bed and Breakfast that houses it. You need an appointment but take the time and you will be amazed.

We wandered into this place more or less by accident and found it through another of San Miguel's hidden treasures, a residence that was full of beautiful art pieces and classic Mexican architecture. The masks are well displayed with information and historic data presented in English and Spanish..

First of all I have to say the collection is excellent. I thought it was small but they have a plethora of interesting masks and their stories. The lady that opened for us was very nice and even though we did not make an appointment which is recommended she let us in. Which I greatly appreciate. They were preparing for a wedding and invited us to see the decoration. Would've loved the tour but being how it was short notice I totally understand.
A true must see. However, I do have to advise to take a vehicle since the location is pretty steep and people I was with were winded when we got there.

Bill provides guided tours, and likes to give you the story of his involvement with the collection. Leave yourself plenty of time to enjoy the tour. the Museum is housed in a fabulous house which also serves as a B&B. Well worth a visit.
