We did an early morning birding tour around the maniultepec lagoon with our guide, Eve. Absolutely brilliant!!! One of our best ever birding tours (and we’ve done a lot, including Costa Rica, India, S Africa, Tanzania!). 61 identifications. Some great photos to show for it too (including some nesting boat billed herons). THANK YOU EVE!

I am glad we reserve a minivan with Roberto, he is awesome! super friendly guy and make you feel comfortable all the time. We went to San Agustin and to Manialtepec with them and love them!

We went on a tour of the bioluminescent lagoon with Eve and had a most magical time. It was a very dark night and the lagoon was glowing like crazy. We got to spend a good amount of time swimming and we all really enjoyed ourselves. Eve gave us helpful information throughout. He also dropped us off at our Air BnB after we returned (a little far from town) which we really appreciated! We also booked a dolphin viewing boat trip and just loved it! Again, Eve was our guide and his command of English made for a smooth and graceful experience. He was able to take video underwater and shared it with us. I WISH we had found this company first thing and had done all our activities with them.

Thank you “joe” for the amazing tour. It took a little patience but as promised you found us hundreds of dolphins playing in the water and racing our boat. The young adults on the boat seemed to enjoy getting in the water with them while we chose to stay onboard and watch. They jumped through the air just like sea world but they were free and untrained just enjoying showing off for us. A must see and so worth the very reasonable rate. You also found lots of turtles(two mating) and a water snake but sadly no whales that day. Highly recommend

I've taken up birding in the past four years and try to set aside time for birding whenever I travel. I've made it a practice to keep lists of species I see, and it's always helpful--especially in new places--to go with local experts who can help me identify what I'm seeing, including professional guides where the birding is especially spectacular.
Well, Oaxaca fits the bill for spectacular birding, and Pto. Escondido Ecotours ("Lalo Ecotours" on FB) fits the bill for expert guides. I was in Pto. Escondido for a family vacation last week, and set aside a day for birding (unfortunately, my wife and sons aren't birders--otherwise, I would have birded there every day). The Laguna Manialtepec is the premier birding spot on the Oaxacan Coast, with some 230+ species registered there (out of over 900 in the whole state). Everardo ("Eve") and his father, Lalo, guided us through the lagoon. They know its every nook and cranny, every inlet and alcove, and know where to find specific species and nesting sites. They were patient in stopping and allowing me to take photos; their explanations of bird behaviors and field marks to distinguish between different species evidenced a knowledge equaled only by their passion for birds.
I went with a list of target species, including many I hadn't seen and some I'd seen before, but only a few times or once. We saw over 70 species on the excursion, including most on my target list, some of which were lifers (white-throated magpie jay, bare-throated tiger heron, boat-billed heron, wood stork, mangrove vireo), and others of which I hadn't seen in a long time (roseate spoonbill, white ibis).
Besides being knowledgeable, Eve and Lalo are friendly and outgoing. We stopped for lunch on the sandbar that, out of the rainy season, separates the lagoon from the Pacific. (Word to the wise: I'm not sure if it's expected, but it's generally good manners to pay for the guides' meal, as well as give a tip to the motor boat pilot.) Conversation was easy and free-flowing. We spoke mostly in Spanish with Eve and Lalo, but we interspersed enough English in to let me know that they're fluent in English.
I'm very happy with the birding excursion and just can't say enough about Eve and Lalo.

The tour of the lagoon just outside Puerto Escondido was incredible. Our guide, Eve, was extremely knowledgeable and helped us identify 57 species of birds. His grasp of the English language was very good. Great way to spend the morning.

We were picked up at our B & B by Eve. Originally we were going to do the kayaking part of the trip in the Lagoon. On our drive we were so impressed by Eve's knowledge and enthusiasm of the lagoon and the wird life, that we decided to do the boat ride with bird watching. We saw many unusual and interesting birds. We arrived at an ocean front location for a shrimp dinner, watching the sun set over the water. Once dark we returned to the boat and were mesmorized by the bioluminescence surrounding the boat. Eve explained the bioluminescence beautifully. It was as though we were looking down at the water and saw a sky full of stars. I highly recommend this evening and night of wonderment.

Excelente cabalgata, es larga y tiene muchos crucero por agua es maravillosa. Las vistas que se pueden aprecie en el camino y el guía William muy buen ánimo y conocimiento y dominio de los animales, y nos dio mucha seguridad para realizar los cruces. Nos la pasamos muy bien.

Si quieren tener esta hermosa vista a la hora de la comida no dejen de visitar Zapotalito, Oaxaca. Está a una hora de Puerto Escondido y es una maravilla, todo lo que necesitan para encontrarse consigo mismos. Además la comida en el comedor “La Flor del Manglar” es riquísima y estarán apoyando a la cooperativa de “Las mujeres del manglar” un grupo de mujeres pescadoras. ¡Vayan, vayan!
