A group of us went and spent a couple hours climbing the paths and stairs around the nature reserve. A lot of effort has been put in to make it interesting and entertaining. Our guides were Spanish speakers but did their best with the English they had as we did with our limited Spanish. We enjoyed seeing all the different trees and learning some were local but some were brought in to the country. There was a cacti garden and an orchid garden as well.

este jardin botanico esta a unos minutos del centro de puerto escondido, aunque no es presisamente una atraccion turistica deberia a importar a todos visitarla, con una variedad de orquideas y palmeras endemicas y otros cientos de ejemplares de arboles locales y plantas medicinales es un buen pretexto para perder el tiempo de la mano de tu acompanante y aprender de plantas de la region, la umar ofrece guias con el grado de Biologos para disfrutar mejor de este atractivo jardin botanico

We visited in February ... the dry season. Not much in bloom but having a personal tour given by a student at the university was fabulous. The tour was in Spanish but our guide spoke slowly so it was good practice for us to use our phrase-book Espanol. The Jardin is more of a conservation area than a botanical garden but it was nice to see the effort to preserve local trees and plants by the local university. We were happy to support their project even if it was not very elaborate. There is no entrance fee but we did tip our guide who is a student.
We heard about the Jardin from Gina Machorro, the 'information godess' at the tourist office on the Adoquin in Puerto Escondido. She told us how to get the 'collectivo' bus there and recommended going on to San Pedro on the 'collectivo' after our garden tour. This was one of our most interesting days in Puerto Escondido.

El jardín botánico es hermoso, tiene un excelente orquideario, te acompaña un guía que te informa además de la biología de los especímenes, también conoce sobre los usos y costumbres que el pueblo oaxaqueño da a las diferentes especies vegetales.
La visita no tiene costo, se suben varias escaleras, pero no es pesado el ascenso, es recomendable llevar agua pues hace calor.
Se localiza a pie de carretera, a unos 7 minutos de Puerto Escondido.

Just a short taxi or collectivo ride north of Puerto Escondido. Our group of 4 only spent a half hour here, but we were treated to a guided tour by a knowledgeable botanist. The Jardin is well maintained and well protected. It was a stop on our way to San Pedro and well worth it.

The Botanical Garden is more of a Reserve, certainly not a Botanical Garden that you might see in the U.S. or Europe. You will need to go with a guide and the tour will take about an hour. The tour will be in Spanish. The entrance and the guide are free but you can tip the guide. The Spanish speaking guides are recent graduates from the University and are knowledgeable.
The Reserve has gone out of the way to find local medicinal plants and plant them along the trail. If you are interested medicinal plants, especially trees, the Reserve might be of interest to you.
The Reserve also has a small collection of orchids.
I found the place to be boring and do not recommend bothering to go there, unless you have an interest in medicinal plants.

Es impresionante la variedad de plantas y animales que habitan ahí, lo tienen muy cuidado y vale mucho la pena visitarlo. Así conoces la flora endémica, :).

sono arrivato el jardin botanico e mi e' stata assegnata una persona per una visita guidata. Il ragazzo era gentilissimo e mi ha insegnato un sacco di cose. Mi ha fatto vedere molte piante medicinali, e mi ha anche dato una dimostrazione, ero stato punto dalle zanzare e lui ha strappato alcune foglie, mi ha detto di strofinarle dove avevo prurito e sono immediatamente guarito!.Sono presenti tantissime piante medicinali, e' incredibile come la natura offra moltissimi rimedi ed e' triste che noi abitanti delle citta' non li conosciamo e dobbiamo affidarci sempre a medici e medicamenti. Il giardino e' curatissimo e la visita e' veramente interessante per chi ama la natura e la cultura. So che organizzano anche visite per i giovani studenti per sensibilizzarli sul rispetto della natura. Bravi, complimenti. Consiglio vivamente questa visita se andate a puerto escondido. Ah, la visita e' gratuita anche se accettano donazioni Io ero talmente contento che ne ho fatta una molto generosa. La struttura comprende una parte visitabile e una non aperta al pubblico perche' dedicata alla ricerca che viene fatta in collaborazione con prestigiose universita'. giovanni

We went there in February which is the dry season and so many of the trees etc were not in bloom. This is more of a conservation area then a botanical garden. Also not for those who have walking issues as there is a lot of climbing. Our guide was helpful and very knowledgeable but spoke no English so if no one in your party speaks Spanish expect to gain little from the visit. Some lovely vistas but overall not the best time of year to visit. Inuit.
