We found this quite by accident but found it very interesting to see the foundations of the coal mine workings that were supported by this town for just Twenty years. It is very peaceful now but I could imagine how it buzzed with life a hundred years ago. I love the fact that the buildings were moved to other places, really good recycling. One can be seen in the courtyard of a Banff hotel!

Bankhead itself was lovely - lots of information about the old town. However, the mosquitos get 1 star. No matter how tough you think you are, use bug spray! Due to the lower, swampy elevation, there were a lot more mosquitos than in neighbouring Banff.

I was so happy to find this on the map when I was looking for things to do in the Banff area. The hike is short from the parking area and is a simple loop through the ghost town. There are many examples of the old mining equipment used for coal extraction, which is very interesting to see.
One of my favorite things is all the wild rutabaga growing, which is left over from when the Chinese laborers lived in the area.

What an interesting hidden gem of a trail! It’s a fun piece of history to learn about and easy enough for the whole family. We walked the Lower Bankhead loop with our small children and we all really enjoyed it. There are plaques throughout the trail explaining the coal mining town, and even why the wild rhubarb grows there. The Lower Bankhead trail is accessed off the road to Lake Minnewanka. There’s a car parking lot, and it wasn’t busy at all on a Saturday afternoon.

You will need a car to get to Bankhead because Roam transit does not stop here. Bankhead is on the road to Lake Minnewanka. The path goes is a loop. Along the loop there are information stands about Bankhead. There are also some other buildings and old equipment. Bankhead was an old mining town. This is an easy small hike. Bankhead was not crowded when we went. Bankhead gives a person an insight to the past.

This trail is accessed on the road to Lk. Minnewanka. A good choice for a couple hour walk among foundations and partial buildings of the old Bankhead coal mine (late 1800's to approx 1920) especially with Covid distancing. We saw 6 others while on our walk and we were on our own most of the time. Quiet and peaceful. Interpretive panels and a display building with viewing windows added to the story. There was also a section of coal train on display with an engine powered by compressed air to work inside the mine. Even if you aren't into history, it was a beautiful walk in the valley with lots to look at and birds singing. Houses from the townsite were moved into Banff in the mid 1920's and there is a corresponding heritage walk brochure available at the Banff visitor centre.

I love little hikes that have ruins. Not a busy trail. Right off the highway on the way to lake Minnewanka. Easy enough for all skill levels.

Abandoned coal mining town which takes you back in time to when this was a thriving local community. Although you have to use your imagination there are plenty of relics from the past plus photos and signage. It's abit unkempt and could do with a bit of attention and better information on the people who lived there, however it makes for a good trail in itself but the bonus is the past history you are walking though.

We were told about this when doing our Lake cruise so decided t have a look whilst in the area.
It is close to the road with a small carpark but not many visitors. There is an easily accessed lookout over the area although there isn't many buildings remaining. There is a short walk (some steps) along a pathway that takes you through the remaining ruins which are well signposted explaining their role in the mining village.
The history is pretty amazing & was the hour or so we spent - not sure I would make a special trip there to see it.

We were a little disappointed that there are just footprints of buildings and not much more. Still, the signs posted are informative and it’s interesting to consider the cause and effect of the areas history. It was uncrowded and an easy walk. In my opinion it’s not a must for your time in Banff, but just something to do if you’ve crossed everything else off the list.
