Great place to explore for an hour or two. Cool trails, lots of driftwood, and Shack Island is amazing. Must go at low tide but when the tide comes in, it comes in fast!!!

Love walking at the beach. A lovely flat gravel walkway with lots of benches.
Great hiking areas. Always a chance of spotting a whale.

My wife has knee issues so the rocky up & down circuit trail was too much...we walked back across the lagoon. The whole place is gorgeous and unique, definitely worth a visit. The wind did kick up while we were there.

I have been coming to Piper's Lagoon since I was a child and have many fond memories of time spent there. It's a lovey straight stretch of beach and an easy walk if you don't want a hike, then there is a bit of a climb or some navigating required to access it fully further, so not the most accessible, but it really is gorgeous. There is something special about it.

I absolutely love this park. It unfortunately was to muddy to climb the rocks and get off the trail. There was plenty of benches to sit on and take in the view.

Don't be dismayed if there are quite a few cars in the parking lot because you likely won't see many people. Some people hang out at the beach alongside the spit - so many logs and driftwood to sit on and about 500M of beachfront, so nobody's going to get crowded. And the shubs and bushes keep the beach from obvious sight in any case. Head left and over the rocky bluff to what amounts to an amazing little island around which there are easy trails. Depending on the tide, you can even take a shortcut back to the spit by skirting the lagoon. Watch your step if you're wearing Gucci shoes, though. Otherwise, comfortable walking shoes will do.

Pipers Lagoon is my favourite beach in the Nanaimo area. In the March herring roe cover the beach and the waters are full over wildlife - seals, sea lions, otters. In the summer, you can wade or swim.

The walk has some ups and downs so a short climbing ability is required. Not for people on wheel chairs or walkers. It is a windy spot on a windy day as it is right on the ocean. But it is worth while to go there and get a view of of Nanaimo and the flora and beaches which surround it. It was worth the uneven climb and trails. Highly recommend it.

Yes, you can ride the in-coming tide at Piper's 's channel. It is an exhilarating experience akin to swimming down a horizontal waterfall. Be aware that you should be a strong swimmer or wear a life jacket. Be sure to go with others in case you have any problems. There are no lifeguards in attendance. To get to the channel, drive down Lagoon Drive off of Hammond Bay road until you reach the water. There are several parking spots, there. Do not go down Place Road to the park. Be sure to look at a tide chart to determine when there is a n coming tide. Have fun! But, be safe!
