The FW Francis Street clock is something I’ve walked (or driven) by numerous times. It’s one of those fixtures in Victoria that you just end up taking for granted. It exists but you don’t really see it. To be sure, this happens to all of us regardless of where we live. When we become familiar with a place, many of the sights and sounds that send tourists on selfie stick adventures are seen as standard or normal to us. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people go crazy when they see Bald Eagles, for example. For me, they’re a standard feature – beautiful, yes, but standard. In other words, you won’t hear me going “OMG super crazy!” So, too, is how I see the FW Francis Street clock. However, I’ve decided to reflect a little on this piece as part of my “tour of the real Victoria.”
Admittedly, this historic clock reminds me, in many ways, of the Birks clock in Vancouver. Sure, the FW Francis Street clock is a bit smaller and doesn’t have four faces, but the overall construction is similar. Also, much like the Birks clock, the FW Francis Street clock has seen the passage of time from various angles. First erected in 1900 at Government street, the clock served as a convenient marker for those who worked in and around this important Victoria corridor. Later, the clock was moved to Douglas street in 1921 and, finally to its current spot on Broughton street (home to many nice snack treats).
Having stood and watched Victoria grow and thrive for the past 119 years this clock has indeed stood the test of time. It provided a valuable public service – especially before the time of smart phones – by offering reliable time and, much like the Birks clock in Vancouver, a good location to meet with friends. Thus, it is a worthy Victoria landmark.
It is unfortunate, however, that vandals have had their way with the information plaque attached to the clock. Now, in most places where you see the word “clock” written down you’ll notice that the “L” has been scratched out leaving . . .well, you know. Also, it would appear the clock is no longer “ticking,” which is unfortunate. I visited the site at 2:30PM, not 8:20. In any event, the clock is still worth seeing for its historic value if nothing else. If you use your imagination, you can envision this clock, and those like it, as being able to see not just the present but also what has come before you and what has yet to happen.

ブロートンストリートとゴードンストリートの角のところにあるフランシスジュエラーズと言うお店の外側でブロートンストリート沿いにありました。通りを飾っているフラワーポールや日除けの半アーケードなどがあるので注意してないと見過ごしてしまいます。
