Ah, Fort Street! Once a bastion of cute independent shops and eateries, it seems the times are a changing . . . and not necessarily for the better. First, poor old Fort Street received the wrath of Victoria’s mayor in her quest to gentrify the downtown area with bike lanes (me thinks there’s a hidden personal agenda here). The project was completed in late 2018. Now, Fort Street has two-way bike lanes, bike signals and parking spaces . . . you know, because so, so many people use bikes to get around in Victoria. To be clear, I’m not against bike lanes per se, but does Victoria really need 2-way “roads” for them? Second, thanks to increasing rents, many a ma & pa shop has been closing down in recent years; they’re being replaced by your standard corporate MNCs like Starbucks and Tim Hortons. In the current landscape of Fort, these two look out of place but I’m sure they’ll fit in sooner and later (read: the elimination of more independent restaurants and shops). I know all of this is part of Victoria’s “green” evolution, but not all change is really all that great.
In any event, as I reflect on the wonder that is Fort Street, I cannot help but liken it to Vancouver’s Denman Street: Both are close to the ocean; both are home to a multicultural slumgullion of restaurants; both house many a boutique shop; and both offer a relatively affordable area of town to live in. Ironically, both are also changing. Indeed, we can never escape those social forces forever at work in city hall.
Fort Street does have a number of businesses and attractions worthy of a visit, however. For the bibliophile, Russell Books is a must stop. With two floors to explore and 18,000 square feet of retail space, one could easily spend hours in here and, hey, I wouldn’t blame you. For those just wanting to shop around, Fort Street is also home to an eclectic mix of shops and services, including: Cleopatra’s Bedroom, Goo Goo Goggles Optical, Massage Therapy, and the Good Planet Company. It’s nice to know I can get a massage on the weekend! Or, if you’re into history and architecture, there are a number of lovely heritage homes to be seen. The Wentworth Villa immediately comes to mind. Finally, there are also a number of noteworthy eateries on Fort: Ali Baba Pizza (surprisingly delicious), Crust (fabulous baked treats), Dutch Bakery (takes me back to Holland), Fishhook (unique fusion food), and Little Jumbo (a personal favourite). Oh, there’s also Starbucks and Tim Hortons if you can’t forgo conformity.
I think Fort Street is certainly worth a visit, but I’m not too sure I’d allocate time specifically to amble along this stretch of Victoria. But then, Little Jumbo is pretty tempting . . .

We get the feeling that the mayor and council do not want visitors to spend their money here. Parking if you can find it is very expensive. There is many construction projects and the workers are hogging the parking spots. We did enjoy a couple of hours walking along here many funky shops and small eateries

kind of a night mare to travel and impossible to find parking and now you have to pay on sundays if you can find it i pitty the merchants use to be a very nice little place to shop with antique shops in fact it use to be called antique row but high rents and parking issues stomped that out i think the bike lane was the final nail in the coffin

I found a chiropractor that is open on weekends, was in need of an adjustment .. :/ Made an appointment on Sat. (he’s just left) and walked there from our downtown ‘home away from home’ . It was a 15 min. Walk & I was happy to see another area of Victoria I might not otherwise have seen. Many independent shops, eateries & bars. Wide street, lots of flowers - lovely Sun. Morn walk AND a Chiro adjustment - ready to go & see more

Fort Street runs from Wharf Street all the way to Craigdarroch Castle (admission: $15-$16 more or less); it is walkable if no time constraints exist (but none of us tourists live in a world that perfect). However, the walk along "Fabulous" Fort Street is an internationally flavored gastronomic adventure: Mexican, Middle Eastern, and Italian eateries make their home here.
The other side of Blanchard, Fort Street is more historical (and less trendy) but that is an excellent experience, too. It's all good.

Fort Street is where a lot of things are happening as the landscape of Victoria evolves. Check out Discovery Coffee, hit up up any of the restaurants within a couple of blocks of Fort and Blanshard, and then top it off with a sweet treat at Crust. Victoria's food scene is a big part of enjoyment, and worth checking out while doing a wander.

One of the front desk attendants at the Huntingdon Manor Hotel, where I was staying for the week end, suggested a visit to Heart and Sole (a shop that sells handmade shoes as well as other quality footwear and handbags). What I didn't expect to find was a sales staff of women who instantly became best friends. It was such a fun shopping experience that I will treasure. Victoria-ians know how to slow down, be kind, and enjoy the moment. I am trying to hold on to this now that I am back in the Seattle hub.

Visited Cook Village and then walked along Fort Street back to Government St. A few antique shops, lots of ethnic restaurants, gift shops and businesses.

Fort Street has a lot to offer. It has the Blue Fox Cafe which is an extremely great establishment for breakfast. There are other spots to dine on this street so please take the time to see what is available. It has some local shops, including Cloud 9 which is a recreational Marijuana shop. (Way to go Victoria!) It's got ATM machines and plenty of paid parking on the street. Take some time and walk around...I'm sure you'll find something to satisfy all your cravings.
