Situated on the edge of Prince Albert, this small museum is the perfect stop for a quick break on the way to the lake. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the artifacts will interest any young child with an interest in policing. The interactive prisoner transport makes for a nice little photo op with the kids. No admission, the building sits adjacent to the tourism building and the education museum.

Old style museum with artifacts provided by locals. Would be of interest primarily to history buffs or those with experience in the field. The staff from the visitor information booth were very helpful and accomodating in opening up the museum.

We always go here, just to see what is new, even if we can tell you what's in it like the back of our hand. It is interesting that this museum housed three distinct areas of law enforcement... RCMP . The municipal police and the Saskatchewan Penitentiary. Every time we get to the Saskatchewan Penitentiary corner , we are delighted to hear how the warden had been loved by both inmates and staff. It seems surreal because, I always come with my husband, the warden they are talking about! It is hilarious, I guess it is because the history is still alive.

Considering that Canada's other old pen is now closed (179 year old Kingston Pen. in Ontario), the information here becomes very important in preserving the historical past of Canada's penal behaviours, methods (punishment vs.rehabilitation), locks (handcuffs, shackles etc.), uniforms of guards and prisoners (and all of the police officers over the years in the area), etc.
One of the most intriguing things for me was to learn that until extremely recently this penitentiary acted as a fully functioning farm where the prisoners actually raised much of their own food including meat. It is a shame that the government has closed this program down, at a time when farmers complain that many folks don't understand where their food comes from.
It was also interesting to learn that the Warden and his family had a large house on the premises and lived right there. How things change - everything seems so sterile now!
I drove out to to where this 104 year old penitentiary sits (it is architecturally quite unique) and was cautioned to ensure that I took no photos of the actual facility! So look but don't take any photos, if you drive past the actual penitentiary.
