PRobably not the best time of year to see a garden in all its glory! We went for a walk around. We walked all around the outside, the woods, around the ponds, cafe and gift shop but did not go in to the gardens or castle.
Its a lovely area, and nice to walk around. Really pretty.
Cafe was nice.

Sissinghurst castle and grounds are a delight to visit, we have been a visitor over many years and love the feel of the place.
However, I have recently been very disappointed with the offerings in the restaurant, the tea and coffee have changed and not for the better, we had a cream tea on the 3/2/23 that was dry and tasteless, it also gave me a dicky tummy.
On the 20/2/23 we had a soup which was tasteless and I wouldn't chance the tea or coffee and played it safe with a canned drink, which was very pleasant. I cant tell you how sorry I am to say never again, we will bring a sandwich with us on our next visit.

This is a garden that I have wanted to visit for some thirty years, and felt as though I already knew it.
It was a delight to finally see the garden and house of Vita Sackville- West and Harold Nicholson. Although the garden was past it’s best in August, it did not disappoint.
The tour of the house was especially interesting, having read the biographies of Vita and Harold.
I hope to return to the house and garden again in the springtime, to see it at it’s best.
For those who love gardens, or are a fan of Vita, then this is a must visit!

I have been quite a regular visitor to Sissinghurst Castle Gardens over the years, but having visited yesterday for the 'Festive Market' we decided to have a look around the garden - despite it being November. I have to say I was shocked at the state of it. It has been completely abandoned to do it's own thing with rotting plants and shrubs everywhere and a carpet of weeds. I was told the new Head Gardener likes to leave things to nature over winter and hope that more plants will survive to save replanting in the spring. Whilst I could perhaps understand why someone would do that in their own home garden, (although my garden looks vastly better than any of the garden areas at Sissinghurst right now), I think that when you are a National Trust Garden charging expensive membership fees or £11 entry, it should look vastly better than it does now. I realise that the NT wants people to spend loads of money in the shop and the cafe so therefore keep it open to the public, but the gardens are shocking right now. They don't appear to have even bothered to prune anything, let alone dead head old roses. They have several gardeners employed at Sissinghurst (or perhaps they don't now....), so I wonder what on earth they are doing all day. Certainly not gardening.

Some parts of the gardens are on a slope, but are easily managed, but parts are not wheelchair friendly. There are many small areas well planted out and many plants are labeled. Because of the way the gardens are laid out, they must require a substantial work force.
There is a fair-sized secondhand book shop, plus of course a giftshop and café.

Our first trip back for 30+ years and it offered so much more than we remembered.
You tend to think of it for its lovely gardens - a quirky arrangement planned by Harold Nicolson. However, it is his, and Vita Sackville’s story which make it so much more interesting.
There is currently an exhibition of their time in Berlin in the hedonistic Charleston days in the impressive library but it was the guided tour of their cottage which was the cherry on top of the cake. Bob, our guide, was a star! His love of the couple and enthusiasm in sharing information about them, and their house was interesting and infectious. Thank you.
All the staff we met were knowledgeable and friendly. Lunch at the cafe was good and with great views of the Weald.
Well worth a visit.

The variety of the gardens, from traditional English to the newly planted Mediterranean garden which is only a couple of years old, but looks amazing. When we went it was September 22nd, so unfortunately the White Garden was no longer in bloom, but what was in bloom was really lovely. The staff there are very friendly and it is a nice place to visit.

Though the gardens were not at their best, it being the end of a very dry summer, it was wonderful to be there and imagine how glorious they must be when the flowers are in full bloom. And of course the design of the gardens is what drew us there, together with an interest in Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicholson.
The only sour note was delivered by a NT volunteer, in the building with the wonderful portrait of Vita as a young woman, who gave us the 'benefit' of their opinion on Vita who they described in less than flattering terms (commenting on both personal appearance and character). I think a fact-based approach would have been preferable.
Aside from that minor irritation, a most enjoyable morning, and we'll certainly be back.

Great place to spend a few hours. The gardens are beautiful & very well designed. The vegetable garden was wonderful with lots of helpful tips as you go round. The view from the top of the castle is spectacular. Friendly helpful staff. Good countryside walk around the perimeter. The good thing is you can enjoy a short visit if short of time or spend hours exploring. Well maintained. Nice restaurant with limited but good enough menu & the sandwiches were very nice. Inside & outside seating. Highly recommend a visit. Would love to come back & see the gardens in Spring or Summer as I can imagine how beautiful they must look in full bloom.

Really disappointed
Long narrow lane on approach to the house ( it’s not a castle ) not many passing points.
Dogs welcome
The gardens are beautiful
Only two areas you can see is a old lounge area and the turret which you can walk 78 steps (approximately) to the top to see the views
The gardens here are amazing but this is such a “boring “ place for children nothing for them to do or interact with.
Such a shame as this is the first National Trust Place we found the volunteers miserable and not interactive.
The thing I found most interesting is lady of the house Veta family lived at knole house

Do we need to book a visit
Patrick M
Maidstone, UK
No need to book to walk around the grounds and gardens but you have to queue sometimes for the house and tower. There’s a cottage next to the main house that has timed groups , because you are conducted .
The cafe can get v busy and the tables outside go quickly, especially with dog walkers.

Is Sissinghurst worth visiting at end of September. How much is the entrance ticket
Davethetraveller47
ลอนดอน, UK464 ผลงาน
Hi, the adult charge for entrance is £15 unless you are a National Trust member. For some reason they charge £16.50 for gift aid!
A visit would be mainly for the gardens so I would say that a late autumn visit would not be as colourful as Summer.

How do I get there from london?

Hello
It might be difficult to go on Public transport because if you do it will take a long time getting there ,
Maybe go as far as possible on the train then a pre booked taxi ?
Or hire a car from your destination ?
I went in my car , These places are so remote the best form of transport s by car ..
Do you have to pay the full entrance price to walk in the estate grounds with a dog (not the gardens) and use the cafe?

You don’t have to pay an entrance fee to walk around the estate, or to use the cafe, but parking costs £3. The entrance fee is only for the formal gardens, where dogs are not allowed.
There are two cafes. The one nearest the car park welcomes dogs.

Hi I have a small sausage dog & would be travelling on my own, I don't want to leave her in the car on her own, I would carry her all around the garden area like a baby, nothing new there. Would this be acceptable? Kindest regards Rachel

Hi, I'm going around June 12th, Wed. Did you find the grounds (gardens) terribly crowded? Any thoughts on best time of day to visit...early or late?

Because it is such a big place we’ve never felt crowded. So much to see and it is quite Spread out. There is also the gift shop, and two restaurants and plenty of places to just sit and take in the sights. Don’t worry about crowds just enjoy

Are dogs allowed? Are there areas where they are not allowed? Are there any areas where they can be let off their lead?

Not in the formal gardens. But certainly on a lead their excellent Dog walking areas. A lot of local people go just to walk their dog and one of the small cafés wow you are able to bring the dog in and still have tea coffee cake soup etc.

I think you would have to travel by train to Staplehurst ,then get a taxi to Sissinghurst.
