Wonderful trip to Katavi

We have just come back from an individually planned trip with Chabo Africa Safaris to Katavi National Park.

It started with shopping for food and drinks before the start of the trip. At the local village we got a delicious, fresh fish from Lake Tanganyika. They picked us up at "Lake Shore Lodge" near Kipili on the shore of Lake Tanganyika. For me this shopping was an interesting village tour.

Out guide was Serafino and our cook was "Dr. Stomach" Salim. While Serafino did the driving and guiding in the national park Salim prepared wonderful meal for us.

In Katavi we stayed 2 nights at the government bandas. There is everything you need including a comfortable bed, cabinet, chair and a bathroom with sitting toilet and shower. Everything was clean and in working condition.

At the end of the trip they delivered us to our hotel in Mpanda for our flight the next morning.

Serafino is a truly professional guide with many years experience. I have done 40+ safaris in the last 20 years and this trip was among the best.

The planning was done by Ellen via Email. Prices were transparent and Ellen helped me turn my ideas into a good plan.

Ruaha National Park, 2 days/1 night safari

I used Chabo safari in summer 2021 and it was great. I had 2 days being driven to, and then around, Ruaha park and saw all that I wanted to see, elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, hippos, etc. The girl in the office was very nice and professional, as was the guide/driver, who knew his job well and gave his all, though he didn't seem to like me much and we barely spoke beyond the necessary, I don't think he knew my name, my job or where I'm from, and we had 3 meals together. The one night accommodation was comfortable and the food was great. Great value for money and a great safari experience.

Great Ruaha Safari

What do you want for a Safari: White tablecloth? Infinetypools? Being one of the many? We didn't, so we went with Chabo to Ruaha Park and took four full days to be able to get to know animals, nature and the landscape. That's what we came for. Chabo provided a great local guide/driver, Gotfrid, a old but sturdy car, simple bandas at the river where Elephants eat the hay from your roof at night. Gotfrid knows every inch of the park. We did two drives/walks a day an in between we took time of to lunch and sit at the riverside, where many animals spend the afternoon as well. When - after a four day hunt - we finaly found a leopard in a tree, we asked our guide not to do what other cars did (respectlessly drive through the bush to get a closer view), and he did not.
We ate at the restaurant, but if you want to, you can cook yourself at the banda's, if you bring your own supplies. We saw another group doing this.
Visiting in the dry seson is very recommended (e.g. july/august/september)

Fantastische Safari- & Tanzania-Familien-Erfahrung: Besser geht es nicht!

Wir waren als Familie (2 Erwachsene, vier Kinder im Alter von 7 bis 16 Jahren) im Juli/August für drei Wochen in Tanzania und waren hiervon zwei Wochen mit Chabo Africa auf Safari. Unsere Tour führte von Selous über Mikumi in den Ruaha National Park und endete mit einer Wanderung in den Udzungwa Mountains. Untergebracht waren wir in den National Parks in Zelten auf den "öffentlichen" Camping Sites, begleitet wurden wir in den Tagen von Sam, unserem Guide und Fahrer, sowie von Salim, der das Kochen übernommen hat. Die organisatorische Abwicklung erfolgte vor Ort in Iringa durch Hilda im Office von Chabo Africa.
Die Reise war für uns in allen Bereichen optimal und übertraf unsere Erwartungen bei weitem. Bereits die erste Anfrage und die Zusendung eines ersten Programmentwurfs erfolgte postwendend und unkompliziert per Mail, einige Anfragen wurden sofort beantwortet und zu unserer vollsten Zufriedenheit umgesetzt. Auch als vor Ort noch Fragen aufkamen, wurden diese sofort von Hilda beantwortet und geklärt.
Sam war als Guide sensationell - ein sehr charismatischer Mensch mit einem sehr guten Einfühlungsvermögen in unsere doch sehr verschiedenen Bedürfnisse (die Altersspanne in unserer Familie ist doch recht groß und ALLE wurden genau passend beachtet und eingebunden) und einem unglaublichen Wissen in allen safari-relevanten Bereichen. Er wusste zu jedem Tier und zu jeder Pflanze interessante Details zu berichten und kann sich in den o.g. Nationalparks bestens aus, so dass wir auch z.T. weitab von den "Standard-Routen" durch die Parks unterwegs waren und den Tieren auf der Spur waren. Auch wenn z.B. Elefanten bis ans Auto herankamen und mit den Rüsseln den Wagen abtasteten, fühlten wir uns doch zu keinem Zeitraum unsicher, sondern konnten einfach nur staunen.
Salim ergänzte mit seinen Kochkünsten das Team. Wir hatten mit einem einfachen Essen gerechnet, stattdessen bekamen wir morgens, mittags und abends mehrgängige Menüs gezaubert, die WEIT über den in Reiseführern genannten Safari-Standard hinausgingen. Auch hier wurden unsere verschiedenen Wünsche aufmerksam berücksichtigt und umgesetzt. Dies galt insbesondere auch für "Extra-Wünsche": Wir wollten gerne Kochbananen ausprobieren und auch das in Tanzania weit verbreitete Ugali - kein Problem für Salim: Er nahm uns mit auf den Markt und kochte z.T. mit uns zusammen. Für den Geburtstag unserer Tochter backte er sogar einen Kuchen auf dem Feuer. Unglaublich.
Die Zelte waren sehr gut und geräumig, Chabo Africa stellte Matratzen und Decken zur Verfügung. Wir hatten nach Absprache unsere eigenen Schlafsäcke dabei, da es in Ruaha im Sommer doch nachts etwas kälter werden kann. Klapptische und -stühle sowie Geschirr etc. waren in großen Kisten im Jeep, die "öffentlichen" Campingsites waren gut ausgestattet und sehr sauber. Und nachts war man so sehr "mitten drin", dass wir die Hippos und Hyänen hören konnten.
Um das Gesehene zu verarbeiten und ein wenig herunterzukommen, schlossen wir einige Tage im Norden Zanzibars an. Das ebenfalls von Chabo Africa gebuchte Resort war wiederum klasse - ruhiger, sehr freundlich und genau passend. Auch hier klappte die Organisation hervorragend.
Sollten wir wieder nach Tanzania kommen, wäre für uns klar, wo wir buchen: Chabo Africa - und natürlich wieder mit Sam und Samil.

1 hour after leaving, the 4x4 broke down.. no front brakes! The driver tried to fix it just enough to keep going which meant driving in second gear for the entire journey. A 2 hour trip turned into a 5 hours trip which was just to the park entrance. The driver took the car to a mechanic after our game drive, which was limited to just 1.5 hrs due to our late arrival, but had no luck so we continued with no front brakes. On the way back, one of the doors almost fell off and the driver had to secure it using rubber strap. We had to stop every 40 minutes as something else went wrong (low oil pressure, refill leaking radiator). Eventually the car died and we continued our return in a taxi. We wasted another 5 hours getting back to our hotel. Ann from the agency agreed to compensate each customer USD 50 each, which amounted to USD 200 as we were 4. But as it was a Saturday and she had no cash and we were leaving Iringa, she agreed with the Mama Pizza Iringa Hotel, where we were staying, to deliver the $200 first thing Monday morning which would go towards our accommodation bill. This never happened, the hotel manager (Richard) called her and went to see her in the office but no money.. always offering another excuse. We tried to contact her but she refused to answer. Eventually we gave up and transferred the money to Richard so at least the hotel was not out of pocket. This company cannot be trusted and their service was absolutely terrible as was their unsafe vehicles. As for Ann and the way she managed this situations, she should be ashamed of herself. You can confirm this info with Richard at Mama Iringa Pizza Hotel.

Reading your review made me feel very sorry of myself and the company. Though there's nothing I can do so far but reaching to the point of disqualifying my company regardless to the breakdown of vehicle and to be compensated with $50, the company was able to refund that. Breakdown of vehicle is something that we can not guarantee that it won't happen. The road condition is very bad that can lead to anything. Thank you to the driver who managed to drive you back safe but at the end you were rescued with a small car that was available at that time. Regarding to the way you were treated with Anna during this tragedy, was unfair but there was other levels of management that you would have followed. We have created the company reputation for the past 4 years and we have excellent reviews from people who trust in us. Our company is trusted and we will continue providing a best service to all of our customers.

We innocently bought and paid cash for a 2 day safari to Ruaha National Park ! We were picked up Mama Iringa lodge Italian restaurant for the exciting safari ! Very late and then it all began ! The landrover (vehicle ) was a disgrace unsafe to say the least ! We had no brakes a quarter of the into the trip . Hence the driver tried to fix with a rolled up plastic bag ! Then another came along another driver that supposedly helped . On we went and eventually arrived at the park . So late that no lunch was organized which was included ! Waited and eventually the disgusting food came as the cook was drunk and continued to be drunk and unorganised for the one full day there . However we did see some animals. Drive back to Iringa at about 20 k’s . There were 6 of us not very happy people ! The french couple got a refund of many hours in the office and were told we get a refund . So to this day they have delivered nothing ! They agreed to pay our bill at Mama Iringa, local Italian lodge and restaurant which included tips for staff . So all in all we have travelled all over the world and have never experienced anything like this . So strongly recommend not to use this company and apart from anything else the unsafe vehicles .

Great southern Tanzania, but Chabo's service below expectations

We booked a 2-week safari package, including Selous, Mikumi, Ruaha and Udzungwa. In summary, we have mixed feelings about Chabo. On the one hand, the trip went well with the lodges and Safari guides and also sometimes with the Chabo staff. On the other hand, Chabo has not been able to establish a real relationship of trust. For example, they lied to us several times about the reasons for the absence of our guide after three days of safari. The car they had for us broke down and instead of openly informing us of the solutions they were considering, they strangely preferred to say that the guide had had a personal problem. Fortunately, the people of Selous' first lodge, Mpingo Lodge, took over, including Selous' visit (read our opinion on this highly recommended lodge). Chabo then rented a cheap open car (without seat belts) to take us from Selous to Mikumi and finally join our guide. It would have made sense to have a closed and safer car (probably more expensive too) to drive for seven hours on dusty and dangerous roads. Later, without explanation either, they replaced a correct car, which we only kept for two days, with another car in quite poor condition. Most of Chabo's good reviews are certainly well deserved, but it would be a pity if the reputation they have built up over the years were to begin to fall apart through a certain lack of respect and consideration for customers. Apart from that, Tanzania and its people are wonderful.

Amazing safari experience

It was our first safari and we had an amazing experience. Chabo staff has been very professional in answering all our questions before the reservation and arranged everything according to our needs.
We enjoyed a lot the game drive with Sam, our guide, and his company. The bandas have the essential stuff needed and the food was great. Recommended also the walking safari, few hours walk through the park, following animals footprints and watching hippos from close distance.

Chabo was good at organizing my safari even in very late notice. I was picked up in Iringa and taken to Ruaha National Park. It is a beautiful place. The guide was very discreet but it was nice.
