Decided last minute that the next day that we wanted to go to Manzanillo to check it out will decided to see what activities there was. Found this. The Local Medicinal Plant Walk was great. We got lucky and was able to do the walk the next day even with it being last minute. It worth $30 walk the Alba gives. She even gave me a leaf from a tree that help with swelling.

One of our best vacations ever! Clean and comfortable accommodations with protection from mosquitos since you are right near the jungle and a block from the beach. Warm and welcoming. Molly & Javier truly made us feel at home. Javier is a fantastic tour guide who is extremely knowledgeable about the local plants, wildlife, and history. We didn't want to leave and can't wait to go back. It's great for families, couples, friends, etc... We've traveled to Cancun, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, St. John, Aruba, Miami, Disney, etc and visiting Centro Ashe in Manzanillo is one of our favorite family vacations.

We felt safe and comfortable and had fun the entire time. Loved waking up to the sound of the howler monkeys and birds. Walks on the beautiful beaches with clear water. The cooking class using local ingredients was delicious. Plant tours, jungle hikes, and chocolate tours were all great. All supporting the local economy. The Off bug repellent we bought at the farmer's market was better than the Ben's bug repellent we bought at R.E.I. We stayed for a week with a 10 year old who loved seeing the sloths, toucans, howler monkeys, iguanas, etc. We did a mix of activities, education, and relaxation. Enjoyed napping some days and some days looked forward to coming back after a long day to take a hot shower and drink cold, fresh coconut water.

Highly recommend visiting Centro Ashe for the accommodation, location, relaxation, and education!

unfortunately the center was closed when i was there but was able to get a local tour with the owner's husband, Javier (not sure about the name)...He was a fabulous guide who has lots of knowledge and respect for the environment and the local people..
He would point out animals along the way, as we headed to the indigenous family living in the jungle, where i got to see how chocolate is made traditionally, see there personal garden of spices, and plants which they use daily..
Amazing!!
Then a small hike down to a waterfall ...beautiful are...
An awesome tour guide and very recommended!

I just returned from a week long herbal retreat at Centro Ashe that was led by Lupo Passero from Twin Star Herbal Education. I have taken courses from Lupo previously and was excited to learn from her in a beautiful location and different setting.

I do not have an herbal background and am only just beginning my journey of identifying and getting to know the plants and what they can be used for medicinally. We learned so much information through our class sessions, technical information provided, plant walks, local meals, but I found that I learned the most being immersed in the environment and intuitively feeling and absorbing the messages the plants have to give us. Lupo is a fabulous teacher in this regard and opens your mind and spirit up to tapping into your own talents and abilities (heart coherence) and from their sharpening your skills with technical knowledge.

I appreciated the fact that we were not in the classroom all the time as some education programs may be set up. I could study herbal education anywhere or even through books if I chose to. But I chose to go to Costa Rica to be immersed in an environment with new flora and fauna but also to relax and nurture myself.

The schedule we held was fantastic. It was the perfect blend for me. The first few days were local in Manzanillo and in the classroom to help us relax after a long day of travel to get there. We had plenty of time to visit the beach, explore the area, and listen to the monkeys. We also were not left alone too long where you might find yourself bored or thinking about things at home. (One of my main goals was to detach from the hustle and bustle of America, but I know that if I laid on a beach all day coming from that environment, I would find myself antsy!)

The pace seemed to pick up a notch a few days in when we began to explore areas outside of Manzanillo. We had a free day in Puerto Viejo, the next day was filled with the amazing pieces of the jungle on a 5-6 hour hike. Javier led us to all of the treasures where we saw spiders, snakes, cacao, butterflies, amazing birds, sloths, monkeys, crocodiles, and then we took a peaceful break and drank fresh from the source coconut water. The next day, we visited Bribri and learned how to make chocolate with Catato which was an amazing experience and so delicious! On the way, Javier pulled over twice knowing he might be able to show us some more sloths up close and personal. And he delivered! We visited the Bribri waterfall after making chocolate and then headed back to our basecamp for some afternoon classes.

Lupo taught us how to make salves (tumeric and ginger), a chocolate and cinnamon oil that is utterly delicious, and then we spent an entire session bonding with a plant of choice and making a flower essence with it. It was an amazing blend of classroom time with information and hands on time. I feel very confident that I could use what I learned at home and whip up plenty of my own medicines!

Now, the food! I have food allergies so I always have to be cautious when I am not in control of what I am eating. Molly reached out long before our trip to make sure she could accomodate anyone that needed anything in particular. She was on top of my needs and the entire week I didn't have to worry about having an issues or reactions to anything. Each portion of the meal was buffet style where I could avoid certain things if I needed to. This made it very easy for me to control what I needed. We had a nourishing cool and hot tea every morning made with local plants. As well as hot coffee that was delicious. Each meal featured rice and beans in some fashion, we consumed tons of local fruits/vegetables, local dairy (some of the best cheese and yogurt I've ever had), and then of course Luba and Alda's hot sauce! Luba and Alda work very hard to provide some of the best local cuisine and they are fantastic at what they do.

Prior to this trip, I felt tired, burnt out and very low energy. As soon as I arrived, I slept so well every night and woke up at 5am to howling monkeys that made me smile every day. Each part of the day was the perfect medicine I needed for my body, mind but also my soul. I am very grateful for having the opportunity to attend this trip and to "unplug" for a short while. I met some truly amazing people and we will forever have wild memories from our visit.

One of my favorite experiences besides the sloths of course was an evening we lost electricity due to an issue with a power line. Molly quickly ran to the store to grab some candles and we had a beautiful, peaceful and grateful meal by candlelight. It was the perfect end to our weekend. It was unplanned, but sometimes that's when the most beautiful things can be created...if we surrender to it.

Molly also attended to any and all of our needs immediately and as efficiently as she possible could have. She knows the area and the plants so well and offered her knowledge as much as she could. She also offered her assistance in helping us fulfill any dreams or desires we had while in Costa Rica. She set up massage appointments for a few friends, organized transportation and offered options for any exciting activities we might want to try in our free time.

I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I have returned to the states feeling rested, well nourished from the inside out, and so thankful for the opportunities we are given to make stops along our individual journeys.

Big thanks and appreciation sent to Molly, Lupo, Luba, Alda, Javier and all that made our trip and stay a great cultural experience! Hope to see you again!

My two friends and I spent a week at Mollys beautiful, charming house in Manzanillo (we miss it already!). We decided on taking a cooking class with a local woman called Luba. She showed us how to cook an authentic, simple but super-yummy Carribean dish! Luba is really cool and it was fun and interesting to hear stories about how her grandmother teached her to cook and other stories while cooking our "Run Down" (the name of the dish) :-)
We totally recommend it! Thank you, Centro Ashé - great project!

Manzanillo is a hidden gem in the Costa Rican jungles. The classes introduced us to a wide variety of indigenous plants and learned how the natives use the plants for medicine. Molly is a wonderful host and really took the time to be there for all of us to make sure that we were well taken care of. This trip provides an opportunity to experience true way of living amongst the plants and animals with respect and harmony. That means getting out of your comfort zone and opening your heart to appreciate the simplicities of life to truly intake the magic that takes place here.

Molly, Lupo, Alda, Luba and Javier had very distinct knowledge to share with us. I love how they teach but allows us to use the knowledge to think and make discoveries of our own to form a unique individual experience.

They are very clear on what to bring for the trip on their website which included all the things we would need including bugspray, towels, writing utensils, amount of cash we would need, and all other small details, which was very helpful to be prepared for this trip.

Plants walks, ancestral healing, flower essence making, medicine making were among the classes we took and the information we receive paves the way to get into more research about the particular subjects. This is definitely for those who come with an open heart and mind.

At the end of the trip, we made very good friends, shared lots of laughter, learned so many wonderful things to take us to our next level of learning in life. Its so cool to walk to the ocean for a dip after a long day of classes. This is definitely an experience of a lifetime and an opportunity to meet like minded people who love and respect nature and Mother Earth!!

Namaste!!

I just returned from a week long herbal retreat at Centro Ashe in Plant Spirit Medicine and it was simply priceless and what my soul needed. I have been studying herbs with Lupo (from Twin Star who led the retreat) for the past year or so and this was my first trip down to learn from not only Lupo, but the crew at Centro Ashe. The trip was the perfect combination of plant spirit medicine and free down time to explore the area on our own and provide much needed down time to integrate what we were learning. Molly, Javier, Alda and Luba provided an amazing experience of taking care of us, teaching us and connecting us with local community members to learn from. The chocolate making experience in Bri Bri was priceless as was the jungle tour with Javier. The crew at Centro Ashe ensured that all of our needs were taken care of, even when minor hiccups happened (as is the nature of life and living in the jungle!). They provided all items that were included with the trip (i.e we were asked to bring items such as pens, beach towels, bug spray etc as these items are harder to come by there). As a side note, yes, mosquitos do occur!! But that is what happens when you are staying in the tropical jungle and opting out of staying in a 5 star luxury resort. With that said, the room we were in was so cozy and comfortable and the nights were actually really breezy and enjoyable. I know I will be back next year and highly recommend a visit out to learn about plant medicine and the beauty of the area from Molly, Javier, Luba and Alda! Much love to all there!!

I just returned from my second stay at Centro Ashe, this time participating in a Plant Spirit Herbalism Course in partnership with Twin Star Herbal Education. Molly provides such a wonderful space for local and indigenous folks to share their knowledge of the local flora and fauna. Centro Ashe is the perfect place to settle in to the relaxed pace of Caribbean life, and to be immersed in the gorgeous landscape of Costa Rica. During my stay, I felt nourished by the delicious food cooked with love by Alda and Luba. I also felt that any concerns I had would be addressed to the best of Molly's ability, and with great care. If you are looking for a well-rounded and authentic educational experience, look no further! Centro Ashe holds a special place in my heart, and I hope to return again soon.

I just left the herbal tour and a one week stay at Centroashe. It was a spectacular experience being between jungle and crystal blue ocean . The sea was glorious and so near the queen casitas we stayed in . Molly along with Lupo , owner of twinstarherbs. created a truly magical week. I met the greatest people learned about plants and cooked with my new indigenous friends Alda and Luba. My experience was priceless . I was entertained constantly and felt connected to the spirit of Centroashé. I made lifelong friends and was immersed in a most interesting culture.
If we had any concerns they were tended to immediately . Everyone at Centroashé was there to make sure you loved your experience there . I would highly recommend this place if you want to learn about plants medecine from a very knowledgeable source!
Thank you Molly, Lupo, Luba and Alda. Thank you to a great experience.

I spent 2 amazing weeks here as a volunteer to assist in researching local plants for the center's new guide, to be released February 2017. (Be sure to get a copy!) Centro Ashe not only teaches traditional local plant medicine, it provides a beautiful, authentic, peaceful venue to host other herbalist teachers. It is a rich opportunity for anyone interested in herbalism! The week-long workshops even include food prepared by the local plant medicinewoman--And eating Alda's food is truly a spiritual experience <3 For chocolate lovers, I HIGHLY recommend taking their native-led (English translated!) chocolate tour, during which you'll walk a small section of the jungle of Bribri and then actually make your own chocolate, from bean to chocolate, which is then made into the most delicious traditional hot chocolate you'll ever taste. I was in great need of a rejuvenating and educational trip, and I got all that and so much more. -Elizabeth Gilhuly, President, American Herbalists Guild Washington DC Metro Chapter
