I would recommend a visit here, particularly if you're interested in the fire service, or just the local history as it's really interesting and a good way to spend a couple of hours of your time.
You have to pre-book by calling the centre, but when you arrive you're met my ex-fire bobby's who clearly love their job and make you feel really welcome.
There is a short slideshow at the start, which for a local like me was more interesting as it brought back memories of my childhood, but it's brought to life by the guys as in some of the pictures and the fires, they were actually there.
After the slideshow you're taken around the heritage centre to see the immaculately restored and maintained fire appliances, and other memorabilia. Again, much of this was brought to life by Joe and Frank as they were able to share personal experiences. I will definitely be back with other members of my family, but thanks to Joe and Frank for making me and my 'Irish son' so welcome and for making the visit so interesting.
Whilst it's free, they ask for a donation, so as it's not funded at all please give generously!

The correct title for this attraction is 'Merseyside Fire and Rescue Services Heritage and Education Centre'.
This excellent facility is not generally advertised and possibly unknown to the majority of Liverpool residents, except for group, or school visit organisers.
The Centre has a collection of restored fire fighting vehicles and a huge collection of memorabilia and equipment telling the story of firefighting thoughout the ages.
Staffed by volunteer ex firefighters, whose enthusiastic, and at times amusing, recounting of their own experiences, together with the history and development of the service provides for an interesting visit.
Visits have to be arranged in advance: this can be done by telephone or e-mail and admission is free; although a modest donation is appreciated.
Although some distance outside the City centre, a half hour journey on the number 58 bus will drop you off right outside the Fire Service headquarters. Alternatively, if you wish to take the train, Aintree station is a short walk away.

You need to call and book a visit but it is well worth it. The guys who run the centre are all ex firemen and make you very welcome. They have a short presentation and then a tour of the centre the have a vast collection of equipment and tales to go along with the items. There is an education centre so great for school visits to. It is a gem that is overlooked as it is a little out of the city centre but well worth the trip by car or Mersey rail whose Aintree station is a 5 minute walk away.
