I went on a two day camping tour with Sunrover Expeditions on Fraser Island. Our guide, Jai, was fantastic! He picked us up in a Toyota Land Cruiser and made the entire experience fun, friendly, and knowledgeable. We explored the island in a Toyota Land Rover, which added to the adventure. Highlights included Lake Mackenzie and the shipwreck. We encountered dingoes, jellyfish, sharks, spiders, and more. It was a memorable adventure!"

My friend Katie (up from Sydney) suggested she & I sign up for this cool tour. I’m up for most things & took no time at all to get in board. It also didn’t hurt that I’d never been to Mulgumpin/Moreton Island despite living in SEQ for 40 years!
We drove out to the Port of Brisbane ferry terminal in my car (though there was an option to get picked up & transferred from Brissie) where we met with our guided & tour group. This was actually the first part of the adventure as we had booked via Bushwacker Tours & they were MIA. We didn’t know where our group was but we called around eventually we found out that Sunrover Tours had bought out /subcontracted with Bushwacker and we were booked on Sunrover.
1. Ferry Ride
First off was the 90 minute ride on the Micat Ferry. The trip was smooth and there was a cafe that did great wake up espresso coffee in cool ‘I Love Moreton Island’ cups. Our 2 guides came & chatted with us on board & recommended changing into our swim gear on board as we were going straight into snorkelling once at the island. There were some good views out to Brisbane from the boat. When we arrived I was surprised to see so many families with 4WDs parked on the shore - this is a popular spot!.
2. Tangalooma Wreck snorkelling
We got straight into our snorkelling once we arrived as Jai our guide advised this was the best time due to tides & potential rips later in the day. I had remnants of a cold/flu but the therapeutic salt water actually made me feel better. Jai & the other guide got us fitted on our wetsuits, fins & snorkel gear & lead us out to the famous Tangalooma wreck & surrounding reef. Now, I’ve lived in Cairns & snorkelled on the Great Barrier Reef several times and thought that was the pinnacle, but I was legit blown away by the fantastic diversity of tropical fish & coral on display here. Moreton is definitely comparable, with lots of colour and activity. I could have spent twice as long but we were limited by the tour format which kept us moving along. Interestingly I learned these were not tragic shipwrecks, but orchestrated as a man-made harbour for boats with Fifteen vessels deliberately sunk over two decades in the 60s-80s. There are apparently over 200 species of fish including yellow tail, kingfish, parrot fish plus sea turtles (which we saw) and dolphins, dugongs are sometimes seen (but not by us!)
3. 4WD trip to the desert
After snorkelling & getting changed, we split up and piled into 2 4WDs for a fun off road adventure heading toward the middle of the island. There was some tricky terrain and our guide told us people get bogged in the sand out here a lot. I thought there may be koalas or kangaroos on the island but our guide confirmed there were none.
4. Sand boarding adventure
We arrived at ‘The Desert’ an aptly named sandscape in the middle of the island with rolling hills & steep dunes - perfect for our sandboarding adventure!
We all climbed to the top of a giant sand hill & took turns tobogganing down the dune using a long piece of cardboard. We had ‘technical’ instruction from Jai our guide at the top so we all felt safe (board up, mouth closed, though I lost my hat halfway down!) . It’s amazing how much speed we actually got up to, especially at the start where the gradient was quite steep & we had fun seeing who could travel the farthest. The girls all travelled further than the guys which was interesting. I even went back for a second go despite the challenging walk up the hill!
Sandboarding aside, the dunes themselves were a sight to behold, with Sandhills travelling for miles with some sections of pure white silica sand
5. Lunch & free time
After the drive back to the beach we had a few hours to have lunch (basic lunch of ham & salad rolls & biscuits) & chill. We went back in the water for a swim & a chat and enjoyed chilling out. We then headed back on the Micat to Port of Brisbane, tired after a day of activity.
All in all Moreton Island Adventure 4WD Snorkel Sandboard Tour was a great, memorable adventure and I’m glad I finally got to Moreton Island after all these years. If I’d known how much there was to see and do (especially the quality of the reef and marine life) I’d have surely earlier. I do think it would have been good to spend a bit more time snorkelling the reef in the beginning and less chill time on the shore at the end - but that’s just me & I loved the fish. I also liked that it was a small group. There would have been no more than 10 of us. Most were part of a young group of friends from France who were friendly & easy to talk to.

My friend and I joined Sunrover’s camping tour on Moreton island. Jai was amazing and knowledgeable. He helped my friend with snorkeling the whole time. I have joined tours in Australia quit a lot but had never met a tour guide like him. He has hospitality mind and entertains people who join his tour. He is also good at photography. We had an amazing time. I would highly recommend Sunrover’s tours if you are looking for fun and memorable tours!!

We had a great day with Sunrover Tours and Jai was very helpful and nothing was a bother for him. The snorkelling around the shipwrecks was fantastic and the sand sledding was great so my hubby said.

Our trip was to Moreton Island and to say I had a great time would be a huge understatement. The island is beautiful and the sea is crystal clear.
Our tour guide was Mark and he was great! Very friendly and welcoming with alot of knowledge about the island. We booked the 3 day trip and were very sad to be leaving. Along with meeting amazing people , snorkelling the shipwrecks just off the beach and exploring the island we made time to sit on the beach and watch the sun go down and were lucky enough to see dolphins swim by.
10/10 A+ 100% would go again!

Jus returned from the most immersive trip into an ancient rainforest and world heritage sand island, Fraser Island for the last three days. Martin Burns was our tour guide who was warm, generous, accommodating and with a great laugh even with his dad jokes and not dad jokes. Co-travellers were loads of fun. Didn't want to return to Australia. I feel energised and recommend Martin as your tour guide, he informed and showed us so much of this magnificent overseas island, twirled in the 4WD and stopped to see things on the M2. Much better than a great big bus.

We took a day trip from Brisbane to Springbrook and Tamborine Rainforest with Jai. He went above and beyond to make sure we had a fun trip and got to experience as much as possible in the short time we had! The views were amazing, the conversation was fun and educational. Jai is really in his element when talking to people, he was kind to us and our kids. It is an experience we won't forget!

We actually went last July but have completely forgotten to leave a review. Jai took me and a pal from Brisbane to Fraser and the whole day was so so good! Great banter from Jai, top bloke, loves Ed Sheeran and drop bears! Gave us some great tips for our onward journey and made the day as comfortable and fun as possible on those dodgy sand roads in Fraser. Jai was super knowledgeable and a great laugh to chat with, we had an awesome day and would go with sunrover again in a heartbeat. Thanks for a top day Jai, we'll both be out there again soon no doubt for a catch up and a beer. Brad and Alex

Sunrover tours provided an excellent experience for my first time at Moreton Island. For a reasonable price camp was set up ready to go for us and food was cooked and provided. All we needed to do was show up and BYO booze. The included snorkelling tour was awesome, and I felt safe with my guide Jai. A very fun time was had and they were very accommodating. Would absolutely do another Sunrover tour again and looking forward to doing Fraser with them next!
