A really well set out group of buildings that tells the story of how living & working accommodation changed from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. The artifacts store was good to see as a special tour and the volunteers on hand in each building to add to the story is a big benefit.

There aren’t enough superlatives to describe this place or experience. Endlessly fascinating, well-presented, friendly staff, great food in the cafe, just a wonderful place. I would plan to spend a full day though as anything less will not be enough!
Shout out to Stephen Bennett, whom I ran into several times and who was knowledgeable, thoughtful, helpful and kind in every instance. The woman in costume in the Bayleaf House was also very interesting.
I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys history and, if you love layers of history, do not miss the 15 to 17th Century house from Walderton!
This museum is a treasure and a gift. Bravo and Cheers!

Our first stop was the cafe as we arrived around lunch time the menu was small but we found something on there the sausage bap was good it did say on the menu that the sausages are cooked in gravy which is fine I was slightly surprised that when the are put into the bap gravy is then poured all over the bap which went soggy quickly (that’s my only criticism)
The museum it’s self is really good in theme areas we didn’t have time to get around it all so will be back
It’s nice to see the staff at the entrance also have a good understanding of disabilities I was very impressed
We will be back at sometime in the future

Interesting buildings but definitely a bit soul less. Very spread out, I felt that the spaces between Buildings/eras could have been utilised far more, to demonstate the relative period in time , and some bits were a bit run down. There is so very much more they could do here.
What did annoy us, was that 30 minutes after we arrived, early afternoon, the pay office in the car park closed. We had popped back to get something from the car, so anyone coming in for the afternoon did so for nothing. Whilst we were happy to pay as it is the income that keeps these places going……. Shutting the pay gate early is definitely not the way to do it and no it didn't re open!!

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.
We’re glad you found the buildings interesting, but we’re sorry to hear that certain aspects didn’t quite meet your expectations. The historic houses have been built to be in-keeping with the time period they represent, so although some of the areas may feel a little bare or not maintained, this is how they would have been in their time period.
We operate on busy days from our lower car park, which is located in a field car park with an admissions hut. The hut is manned whilst the traffic is directed to the lower car park. We switch car parks and change the signs and close access to the lower car park in the afternoon, after which no visitor will arrive from this entrance. As an independent Museum and registered charity we do not offer free admission, and entry is payable from the Museum shop when we operate from the upper car park.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts following your recent visit. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed exploring our Museum.
We appreciate your feedback regarding the paths for those using mobility scooters, being an open air museum in the South Downs, we do try to keep the paths in-keeping with the historic houses and the natural landscape. We are currently reviewing the paths around the museum to see how we can improve these.
We welcome dogs on site, but they must be kept on a short lead at all times as we have livestock on site, and also to respect other visitors who are not as confident around dogs. We are a non-smoking and no-vaping site, this is only permitted outside the museum in the car park areas. This policy is for visitors, volunteers and staff. Our team are all asked to ask members of the public to keep their dogs on short leads and not to smoke/vape on site, so the manager you mentioned was following the policies we have at the Museum to support the wider team.
Thank you for your feedback

This place is amazing and well worth a visit. You can explore at your own pace and take in the history on offer. It has several buildings on site, the earliest dating back to 950AD. They range from early Anglo-Saxon to Medieval and Tudor. There were several herb gardens and also workshops on site with some demonstrations taking place.
There are lots of gravel paths and picnic areas with several benches around the site. I would recommend comfortable walking shoes or boots. The site is accessible to disabled visitors. I saw some mobility scooters. Only the upper building levels would present a challenge as the steps are uneven with not many hand rails. There are no lifts.
The volunteers were very knowledgeable and happy to answer our questions. What a great educational day out.
I recommend you give yourself at least 4 hours for your visit.

We visited with old friends who we had not seen for some time hoping for a stimulating and interesting day. Unless you are an architect or surveyor the buildings need to be brought to life by guides/storytellers. There was a definite shortage of these about and those present, lacked the creative element.
Prices for lunch were high. I had looked at the menu on line the previous day and was hoping for the soup at £6. The actual menu did not have soup and the most economical was Welsh rabbit. Not good value for money. Cost with a drink was £12 per adult. We would have been better off our own smoked salmon sandwiches.
Parking is awkward as it is 10 mins walk from café so as I had to take the dog back to the car before lunch there was a wasted 25 mins.
In the afternoon we wanted to see the museum under the new assembly hall (forgotten the name of this) only to be told it was only open to tours and the last one was 2 pm. Time then 3.10 pm. Oh well.
Overall not good value for money, frustrating and pricey. We learn our lessons.

Thank you for sharing your feedback following your recent visit. We’re sorry to hear that your experience fell short of expectations, and we appreciate you taking the time to let us know where improvements could be made. We are currently undertaking a review on our Museum interpretation as a much larger project, so your feedback is very helpful and supportive as part of this process.
Our café is Dog friendly, so you did not need to take your dog back to the car. There are signs up which indicate the dog friendly seating areas. Our menu on the website is just an example menu which it does state, as we do not have the actual menu on the website as it can change daily depending on demand and supplies.
On arrival at the Museum we advise our visitors of the daily activities, along with handing out visitor information which contains the timings for the Gridshell talk. You can still look inside the upper part of the building, the talk includes going down into the artefacts store which is only open for the talk at specific times.
Thank you again for sharing your feedback from your visit.

Interesting stroll into the past with a few demonstrations along the way….. my only negative would be the cafe, it doesn’t cost anything for some manners from the young lady serving us, Please & Thank you cost nothing especially with the prices being what they are!

We will be travelling by train, staying in Chichester. What means of transportation are available to get from hotel out to the museum? Are there any shuttles, city buses, taxis to takes.out there in the morning and available to get us back to central Chichester in late afternoon? Or must we rent a car only for this day?

I’m afraid I don’t know, we had a car and drove from Southampton
เขียนเมื่อ 13 กุมภาพันธ์ 2023
Hi. My mobile phone recorded my activity on the day we visited the museum and walked the entire site. The total was 11,160 steps/ 7.2 km. Some of that distance could have been before or after the museum. However it’s a gently rolling site with plenty of stopping places. I have two hip replacements and am not keen on walking!
Hope that is of some help.

Whilst The Repair Shop are filming, the area is roped off to the public but you can view them from a distance. We have selected open weekends when they are not filming when you can have a sneak peek and look inside the barn.
Please visit our website to find out more.

เขียนเมื่อ 17 สิงหาคม 2020
Hi there. We were booked in for 11.30 and left about 4.30 and saw pretty well everything. They were filming the Repair Shop (Mon/wedn/Fri) so spent some time gawking! We didn't have to wait around too much and, overall had a good day.

I have a lung condition which makes me breathless, are there many places to sit down and is there transport around the areas, like Beamish ?
เขียนเมื่อ 3 กันยายน 2019
It’s a small cafe but there are seats inside and out. It’s very popular but you can always find places to sit. Public transport does not go through Faversham town centre but its a small place and if you have a disabled badge you can park in the street. Don’t block the view from the cafe though please as that’s not fair on those in the cafe.

We are both over 65 Years old. How much does it cost to get in, also my husband holds a blue badge, so are you able to go in as a disabled person price or would he have to have proof that he is disabled?
