The staff were friendly and helpful. The cost of admission was reasonable. The Museum was small but well done. The train ride was a big disappointment. Not even our 5 year old grandson who loves trains was impressed.

Stopped for a visit while on a road trip. The trains were all interesting. Some of the trains had wasps inside flying around me, keeping me on edge! The older curator gentleman inside the museum was awesome and a walking encyclopedia of train knowledge. He explained the history of trains in eastern Ontario, I admit quite interestingly. It took us around 45 minutes to see everything.

We visited the museum and stayed the night in a Caboose. If you get the chance do this as it is an unique experience. Lisa showed us around and was full of enthusiasm and knowledge. The place has been lovingly restored by dedicated volunteers Lots to see and read about. Also try the hand cart experience along the track

I am always fond of old railway, and I am glad that there are still some remaining old railways here in Ontario. We took a little ride around, there are some accommodation inside the train, including a travelling dentist, nurse rest room and a kitchen.
I will go back there again next year.

The railroad Museum of Eastern Ontario while somewhat light on interpretation of what the equipment and role of the railroad was to the town of Smiths Falls, has a good collection of rolling stock and some very helpful folks. The station building that houses the museum is a wonderful example of a small town Train Station, it is actually far nicer than the modern station on the fringe of town. For a small addtional charge one can ride on a hand car. We also went into the restoration shop and talked with the folks doing the work. If you ever wanted to spent a night in a caboose you can also rent one for the night. We enjoyed it and would come again.

Located away from the main strip, this and the Magic show are well worth the drive to Smith's Falls.
There is a lot to see and do, many of the trains you can go inside and look around. The train station is totally pimped out, and very well done.
They offer discounts to seniors, children, and even for the military!
There is even a train car you can rent for a night! Like an Air BnB!
Lastly there are two or three pokemon stops and a gym at the entrance!

Perhaps visiting on one of the hottest days of the year wasn't a good idea, but we had fun. The station is nicely restored. Lots of access to various cars including a rare dental train. Worth stopping by.

Everyone typically remembers the first time they seen or rode on a train. I was not different. The Museum is a great place to get up close and personnel with some of the technology of yester year. You can climb up on a Caboose, Box cars, an old steam engine and passenger cars. They also have a souvenir shop with a good selection of train memorabilia for both adults and kids of every age. The price of admission is reasonable along with the cost of the souvenirs. If you phone ahead, they will tell you what times the Putt-Putt 4-man cars are running so you and your family can take a ride on one. I still have my engineers cap!

Museum has a wide selection of exhibits. Very impressive was the dentist train. We also had fun with the hand car drive. Staff was very friendly, we were allowed to bring our dog.

The Caboose overnight stay experience at the Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario actually takes place after the museum closes each day! They book the extremely unique and VERY reasonably priced adventure through Airbnb and it far exceeded anything we had expected!
We got to the museum around 8:30 pm on Friday. Soon after our arrival we found John, our volunteer host for the evening. He was very welcoming and a wealth of knowledge! Our walking talking railway history book, John had been a railway man his whole life and we welcomed everything he shared with us.
First things first, John showed us to our Caboose, our nights accommodation, so we could put our bags down. Two of the three Cabooses they rent out were booked that evening. Our was a circa 1941 built during the war and made completely of plywood! The beds were surprisingly comfy and the climate was comfortable. After that John showed us where the kitchen and washrooms for our use were. We had to leave early the next morning so John offered to take us for a tour before the sun set and we were excited to accept. Our first stop was a tour through an old dining car which before being de serviced had been formatted into a dental car that serviced northern Ontario. Most of the communities it went to did not have road access so the train would move from station to station fixing teeth then continuing on. An interesting lesson about Ontario’s history! I believe he said that theirs is the last known dental car to exist. Next we had the opportunity to operate a push car which we did around the yard, I even got to throw the switch! We retired for the evening around 12 to enjoy bevies in our cupola (top part, the lookout, of the Caboose).
The next morning we got up shortly before 6 am to take some pictures and videos for my You Tube and Instagram (@canadianqtstravelblog) and John joined us soon after. He invited us to tour the grounds a little more with him and despite engagements back in Toronto we couldn’t resist! He took us through the snow plow car, into the restoration area, to the original coal engine, to see the railway Cadillac car and finished with a tour of the train station. So cool!
Breakfast from a local bakery is included with the nights stay and Onica served us our breakfast sandwiches in the “train station” and packed our coffee to go for us upon request, she was a sweetheart!
On my quest to find unique and unusual accommodations in Ontario and Canada our overnight stay in a Caboose was a successful check on the list that was better than anything we expected or could have imagined! The price for the evening was amazing for what what received!
