This was a beautiful authentic mayan cooking experience. Yesenia and her daughter were so welcoming, they offered us insights into unique Belizean mayan food and cooking styles, which were delicious! We really enjoyed this experience and I highly recommend you try this!

Cooking with this couple was a major highlight of our stay in Belize. I would love to learn more about the benefits and uses of the various plants on their grounds. The overview of the vegetation we passed through as we arrived and then learning how to make traditional foods from scratch were both fun and enriching to the soul, probably because Enseña y Aldan were so nice and patient. I appreciated their good humor as much as the delicious feast. We made corn masa and tortillas. We also roasted cacao beans and ground them to make our own chocolate. I would do it again if we get back for another visit!

This was one of the unexpected highlights of our trip! Yesenia and Alden were incredible hosts and teachers (plus the love they have for each other is obvious and beautiful). The property and outdoor kitchen are gorgeous, the cooking AMAZING and the food plentiful. We couldn’t believe how many different dishes we got to prepare and eat. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and traditions with us. Highly recommend going home with extra chocolates!

We took a cooking class with Yessenia and Alden and really enjoyed it. It began with a tour of the plants along the path to the outdoor kitchen.
Next we it cut plantain leaves and steamed them over a griddle and then we made tamales. We also made soup and had a chocolate lesson.
We had so much food it was too much to eat.
We bought some homemade chocolates to take home.

This is a beautiful home with a wonderful garden. Yesenia told us so much about her Mayan culture while we cut down banana leaves to make tamales. It's such a comfortable setting grinding masa and cocoa listening to Yesenia or speaking with her family. There is a lot of food - from a banana porridge breakfast to soup to tamales and tostadas! And homemade Mayan hot chocolate and dessert chocolate! This is such a unique an wonderful experience

We did a tour last week with Yesenia and we had SO much fun! Our daughters are 5 and 7 and LOVED helping. We cut banana leaves down to make our tamales, made a tasty soup, rolled out corn tortillas, and also crushed cacao beans to make a chocolate drink. We had so much food to eat (including a sweet porridge and tostados) that we took the tamales home for dinner that night! Yesenia was super sweet and helpful-and knowledgeable about what to do, and why it was done that way. We really stress cultural activities when we travel, so having our children learn how the Mayans cooked was really special. It's in a beautiful location too!

Yesenia and Alden were fantastic hosts and teachers: beautiful home and Mayan kitchen, excellent cooking lesson and wonderful food. So far our favorite Belize experience. Highly recommended!!!

We foodie couple found Mayan Kitchen online with super reviews. We called in the morning at 9 am to schedule a class the same afternoon. Yesenia was so kind to squeeze us in on such a short notice. She made sure to ask about food allergies too. Our class was so much fun and informative. We made from scratch Mayan chicken tamales using plaintain leaves and with ground corn, corn tortillas, Mayan chicken soup with veggies, Mayan chocolate drink from freshly/ grounded roasted cacao beans, and tostadas. Everything was delicious. Every step from grinding the corn/cacao, cutting/folding the banana leafs, making/grilling the tortillas on wood fire, etc was explained and demonstrated in great details with thorough historical/cultural background. Yesenia and her husband were patient, down-to-earth, and had a great sense of humor. They made the experience fun and memorable. It’s obvious that they love what they do and enjoys getting to know each of their clients. We enjoyed learning about the food that are produced on their land. The freshly squeezed Jamaican lime juice and Yesenia’s homemade hot sauce complimented the entire meal. What can I say… great food and great company and a great setting.

This experience was incredible, from what we learned to what we ate, to the fantastic and interesting conversation with Yesenia and her family. She was so knowledgable in the plants and herbs around us and in the history of the food we made, and the course was easy to follow. Everything was delicious, and Yesenia was so kind in helping us to prepare it. The chocolate experience was super cool, and after everything, we fed the dozens of fish in her lovely pond- so much fun! She was so generous that when our cab driver wouldn't answer his calls, she drove us home in her own car. This was definitely the highlight of our trip, and by far the best experience we had while in San Ignacio. If you love food or just want to explore a bit of the Mayan culture, this is the place to go!!!
