The girl at the front desk was wonderful! It had an excellent variety of historical homes from different time periods. There was also a super fun little scavenger hunt and they gave out free freezies if you completed it.

Terrific tea party tour!

My friends and I attended the museum’s tea party tour this afternoon and it was absolutely splendid! We booked rather late in the day yesterday (ie five minutes before the museum closed) but Riley was super helpful with the booking process and was even able to accommodate the allergies within the group.
We did the Pioneers and Trailblazers tour with guides “James” and “Symon”, a couple of gents from 1930s Manitoba (costumes were great!). They were very engaging, enthusiastic, professional and humorous and made the entire experience even better than we could have imagined. They were also really knowledgeable and were able to answer all our questions about the museum’s artifacts. Even if they weren’t sure of an answer off the top of their heads, they made sure to check their records to provide us with one.
The tea party and Victorian etiquette lesson following the tour were also excellent. All in all, we had a great time. Check it out if you can!
Pricing is also very reasonable ($5 for tea party on top of museum admission, which is $10 for adults. Plus, you are able to check out the museum at your own pace after your tea so it’s very easy to make an entire day of it).

A Good Afternoon Out.

We really enjoyed our afternoon out at the museum. Unfortunately, the weekend we came, they switched over to their fall schedule, so we only had a couple of hours to explore. We still enjoyed wandering through most of the buildings and really enjoyed our visit. I would highly recommend this museum, but just leave yourself enough time to see it all.

Lots to look at.

We were there for over two hours and still did not see everything. There was a lot of interesting information. Lots of buildings to look at. I have trouble with my knees and my husband has breathing problems so we did not go upstairs in the buildings. There are a lot of old furniture and ornaments, appliances, etc.

I visited here when I moved to town nine years ago and swore I would never go back. The thing that made me change my mind was a workshop series offered throughout the summer to help remember the stories of Indigenous people in this area. I appreciated the stories I heard that evening so I have given them five stars for making a genuine effort to broaden the stories they tell beyond those of white settlers in the area.

Fright Night

I was visiting my kids and grandkids from Ontario and got to experience Fright Night at For la Reine Museum. I've heard a lot about this museum from my 7 yrs old granddaughter who loves it. It was $20 for the 4 of us. You put a bracelet on if you did not want frightened. Good idea to bring flashlights if you tend to get frightened easily plus it helps you find your way around. We went from building to building in the dark. Each building was decorated with people dressed in costumes to frighten. Our kids ages 7 and 3 loved it. We carved pumpkins, did a cob web maze, made masks, had hotdogs and roasted marshmallows making smores. After the food a drink would have been nice but that is the only suggestion I have. Upon leaving they give you a bag of cheesies with a $1 off Kid City. You pay for nothing once in. We went on a gorgeous night and sat by the campfire listening to stories being read. Lots of fun, thanks Fort La Reine, great job.

A great place to spend an afternoon!

We were staying in Oakville and decided to visit the museum prior to leaving. The primary mistake we made is that we didn't give ourselves enough time to check all of the displays. The museum still provides a tour guide to walk through most of the displays. Our particular guide (Rachel) was very knowledgeable and accommodating - checking in with us to determine what we should see (as noted, we didn't quite have enough time to see it all). Overall, there is a great collection of nostalgic pieces that sheds a light on the local history of the area. Kudos to the staff for such an exhibition.

Nice museum but there are better similar experiences

Fort La Reine Museum was a bit of a letdown for us. It's neither a nice fort, neither a proper museum. The houses are worned out and it's not always due to old age. The objects presented are not always in the proper place or in the proper order and the descriptions or explanations are sometimes lacking.

If you want to see a better fort, go see Lower Fort Garry. If you want great period exhibits, see the Western Development Museums in Saskatchewan. We saw the WDM in Saskatoon and, if you go see that one, you will understand why the Fort La Reine Museum was a disappointment for us.

I guess if you have to stay around Winnipeg, this museum will do. But we did not and saw much before coming here.

Gigantic outdoor museum

I went here with a friend expecting a few dusty old buildings and that I'd be here for maybe forty five mins. Two and a half hours later I was barely able to see all the buildings. There's SO MANY buildings and they're all PACKED FULL of antiques and history. Honestly, bring some water, bring a lunch, and bring an appetite for discovery. This is a wonderful experience for very little money.

Visiting family in southern Manitoba and had seen sign for Ft la Reine many times before but during my most recent visit to area made time to go and see the museum and really enjoyed the site - many restores homes and churches as well as other museums on site - baseball and army - if you like antiques, just a nicely maintained site to wander through! Bonus on this visit, staff in period clothing baked bread in outdoor oven!
