It is now open. We visited today Tuesday 25th October 2022 taking with us our 2 grandsons age 10 and 8, all of us are NT members and booked online. Parking was easy. A short walk to book in at the gate at out allotted time. We first went in the cafe and had drinks and a snack which as usual were a bit pricey as opposed to other places. it wasnt busy and the service was slow. Then into the museum which we all enjoyed the boys doing lots of hand on things and going through the chimney. We also attended the Victorian school room which was very entertaining. Outside we walked to the outdoor play area which was ok but not as big as previous visits some years ago. In all we had a good time.

Whilst I've visited the museum a few times over the years and enjoyed my hops and skips through versions of both the universal childhood and my own, each time I have gone as an adjunct to a trip to the hall. They work very well in tandem and each of them, along with the surrounding grounds add to the overall positive Sudbury experience, with both being the main event and neither being the sideshow.
However, the hall is currently closed for visitors and so when we went this time it was up to the museum to fully step up and shine solo, albeit the gardens were still open for admiration and to gather and inhale good lungfuls of nature.
And I'm sorry to say that the musuem of childhood shorn of its partner flopped slighlty as the star attraction, as we began to realise that it is the whole and not the components that had previously poured themselves together to give us the overall positive experience we'd so enjoyed on past visits.

We have been to the museum a few times before, so yes some of the enchantment and magic has worn off when seem by these worn out eyes, and also I should say our children have got a few too many ages on their clocks now to want to let themselves go and enjoy the museum as teenagers, as they did when they were younger. For starters, they can't fit up the chimney anymore, which was always the highlight of their trips here in the past!

But even taking all that into account, we still found our whizz round; again without the added time to give to do similair in the hall you realsie how little time it takes to go through the museum, certainly not enough to justify a day and the travel needed to get there for us, a tad samey and disappointing.
New exhibits were mentioned and if you strained enough you could see them, but there was nothing that enhanced what was already in situ; nothing that took the exibition as a whole to new heights and undersatnding.

In my opinion the museum of the childhood doesn't have enough going for it to stand alone as a day out or an attraction as one half of a double act, which having enjoyed its sparkle so much in the past surprised me.

If you're thinking of going, probably be best to see if the Hall has rid itself of the builders and is open again in order to have them both in full action again and producing in concert a much better and rounded destination for a day-out in Derbyshire.

Whilst it's a beautiful setting and buildings the actual experience is very dry and not very engaging for little ones.
Some colouring and an interactive aquarium aside the whole thing lacks anything for the little ones to actually get their teeth into.
The bedrooms on the ceiling is a neat idea but is far too distant and awkward to engage properly.
The darkened tunnel with underwater (?) sounds playing absolutely petrified our little one and she had to be carried through. And if it WAS an underwater tunnel what was the significance of the Star Wars toys displayed halfway through?
The automatons displayed are amazing but with none of them working or even videos of them working they were a bit hard to describe their actions to a child.
On the whole quite disappointing for £12.

My husband and I visited the Museum of Childhood while we were waiting for our entry time slot into Sudbury Hall. The visit was very interesting, lots of 'blasts from the past' from our own childhoods, with familiar toys and boardgames etc.

Unfortunately, the visit began to sour when we saw some older books, one called "The Golliwog's Desert Island" on display, which was shocking. There were similar toys and other exhibits as well, one labelled as "Golly" with a very light description of why it's "....linked to racial stereotypes".

We know that this racist rhetoric is part of Britain's history and it's important for people to know about it. But if you're going to present this in a children's museum, it's important to stress what the history of the term "Golly" is, it's important that the children of this country know the hurt and pain that term has caused. Don't sugar coat it and just label it as 'not that great' or 'not very polite'. Label it as what it actually is, words like 'disgusting', 'terrible' 'vile' come to mind.

A longer description would be 'this term depicts a horrible time when we judged other humans based on the colour of their skin. But the vast majority of us understand that this is ignorant and wrong. The Golly is a reminder to never judge anyone on the basis of skin colour'.

Alternatively, get rid of these exhibits altogether. I can imagine a child reading it and going on to refer to his dark skinned pals at school with the same word, setting this country back by about a hundred years in terms of race relations. As if some of us aren't going in that direction already.

Visited in December, just before Christmas during my holiday in the area. As a National Trust member I wanted to visit the house and estate, but I did not check the site that in December advance booking is essential. So I could not enter the house, but instead I found the museum on site, which I enjoyed. It was very interesting - and sometimes sad to see how was to be a child in different times in history. In the museum we can learn about how so many children were used as workers in mines, mills and around houses, that their childhood was not either similar to today childrens', and that they had real childhood only when could play with their toys, which they appreciate and cherished. Well, the world changed a lot...
Very interesting museum looking around, it was nostalgic to find some old toys I played them myself, too. OMG, when our toys are already in museums, so time had to pass over us!
Anyway, nice visit, worth to see if visit the close area.

This is a great little museum where you can reminisce about your childhood. There's toys and games from throughout the ages which is fascinating to see - an remember playing with many of them yourself when you were a kid.

My girlfriend and I visited here in March and it was lovely and quiet. I had not been before but staying in the area we looked for National Trust properties to try as we are members. The museum itself is on several floors and is well laid out and presented. There are many examples of toys with several thousand additional items in storage that are rotated through for display from time to time. The displays are interesting and engaging for adults and children alike. A great visit as part of a day out here.

Well signposted off the A50, the Museum of Childhood at Sudbury is a charming attraction with exhibits of childhood through the ages, and plenty of activities for children.
Well worth a visit is the church next to the house, a wonderful parish church with a wonderful character.

Does not live up to title - apparently childhood only began in Victoria's reign and children only existed to be chimney sweeps or mill hands. Roman or Medieval children didn't exist, nor did children in farming, mining or fishing communities. All far too one dimensional - no mention of parents without access to childcare taking the children to their work with them, for example. As at Styal Mill, no real attempt to place the mill work into the context of its time, and no consideration of alternatives faced by families.

Cadbury collection terrific, and videos very well presented, but cabinet collections seem random and haphazard - themes not obvious. 'Hands on' toys in poor condiiton - diablo and yo-yo toys improperly stringed (diablo strings too short to operate the toy !) Spinning toy whips ditto. What's the point of these if they simply are not usable ?
