This cosy, especial bookseller has a real old-school feel and unique sophistication to it. Books as far as the eye can see, devoted sections to children’s novels and original first editions, Topping & Company also has an upstairs where tea and coffee can be enjoyed. Staff are extremely knowledgeable here and can seemingly answer any questions about all volumes or publications!

If you are in any way interested in books then you must visit this excellent bookseller. There is everything,well presented and you can purchase first edition signed books. Of course the prices of the books do not match Amazon-but the experience in this welcoming shop is well worth paying for.
We were offered and received freshly made real coffee, while we browsed books laid out on the tables and shelves.
If we were closer we would be visiting regularly.

superb old fashioned incredibly well stocked book shop.informative and helpful staff. hard to think of what more a book lover could want!

Probably the best bookshop in England. Three floors chocked full of stock, knowledgeable staff, views of the cathedral and complimentary coffee. What's not to like about this shop. They even stock my favourite French detective novels which I never found anywhere else in the UK. None of the dreadful 'same as, same as' that you get from "Watersmiths". Long may it continue to thrive.

While wandering the lovely streets of Ely came across this gem 💎 turned out to be probably the best book 📖 shop o think I’ve come across ! Three floors of fantastic books 📖 covering every subject I made for the crime / history / sport / music sections and walked out with two books I’ve never come across or heard of before I even got offered refreshments, if your a reader this is a must visit.

Me sorprendió mucho encontrarme esta librería en un pueblecito inglés con bastante variedad y temas. Lo que mas me llamó la atención fue el horario de apertura pues es mas largo de lo normal en la campiña inglesa

Been here many times and would definitely recommend as a must visit in Ely. In fact, don't miss this bookshop if you are anywhere in the Cambridgeshire area. A beautiful journey through a quaint building and lots of current, local, quirky and interesting books. Add to that a bunch knowledgeable people and a lovely cup of tea and what more could any book lover ask. This is what a bookshop should be and I could happily spend all day here.

There was a time when Cambridge had several terrific bookshops, with the main Heffers opposite Trinity being the flagship. Since moving to March we don't get to Heffers much these days. And even when we do it's changed hands and it's former glory days are long past.
So it was a real joy to find Topping Books in Ely, on our first visit we were offered a coffee, free. A nice touch which made the already memorable discovery even better. Two areas of chief interest to me as a book lover and buyer are military history and fine art. Topping has loads of great books in all their departments, including these two, which are often poorly served elsewhere.
It's tricky for them, competing as all booksellers do nowadays with online sellers. Especially when avid readers like myself have limited means. But I try to support this winderful place by buying from them in preference to the online behemoths, unless the difference in cost exceeds a certain margin.
They also put on other stuff, such as author's talks, of which we've been to many, inc. ones by such big names as Jeremy Paxman, Melvyn Bragg, A C Grayling and Nigella Lawson, as well as less familiar but just as interesting writers, like Rebecca Stott and John Sugden.
They even do an annual mulled wine and mince pies evening, which we're about to head off to now!

Easily the best bookshop in East Anglia. Even in nearby Cambridge there isn’t a bookshop to compete with Toppings. Lucky Ely. Worth a journey!

not part of a chain is a rare event these days. On three floors, very well laid out, with attentive, smiling staff it is very much worth a visit.
