This excellent art gallery and museum, housed in a cool, whitewashed Georgian villa, is set amongst pretty, subtropical gardens in a rather elegant part of residential Penzance, but not more than a couple of hundred yards from the bustling centre.
To use a cliché, it is an oasis of calm that I would gladly visit just to spend a few quiet minutes chilling in the attractive, airy café.
However, there's a lot more to it than that.
How excited you are by the paintings and drawings exhibited in the cool chambers of the gallery will, of course, depend upon your taste in art. However, the vast majority of exhibits appealed to all members of my family, which can't be said of many collections. The evocative realism of the Newlyn School and other comparable artists certainly impressed me. Even if it's not to your taste, I think you'd have to be impressed by the skill and attention to detail involved.
Many of the scenes depicted were taken from local towns, villages and countryside.
There's a significant smattering of more impressionistic or even abstract work as well.
The upper floor also houses various historical artefacts associated with the area, which were interesting and fun to peruse.
There is a gift shop selling tasteful souvenirs and other items relating to the collection.
A delightful place to visit and a good contrast to other attractions on offer in this area.

Thoroughly enjoyed our visit here. Very well thought out and particularly enjoyed the Newlyn artists. Full of lots of interesting things and surrounded by lovely gardens and leading on to the park. Lovely café too. Would definitely recommend a visit!

Having read about Tate St Ives - the crowds, difficulty of parking, and the art there, we decided to visit Penlee in Penzance instead. Great decision - easy, cheap parking just next to a lovely park with delightful cafe, but most importantly - excellent art - both the Lamorna exhibition and the Newlyn artists.

Really enjoyed the Gardens and the Cafe on site.

|Great little art gallery and museum situated in Penlee Park. The highlight for us were the painting by the Newlyn School. Perhaps the best known, 'The Rain it Raineth Every Day' was kept locked away by the Penzance council as they thought it may have an adverse effect on tourism. Also an interesting museum on the first floor and the little café is excellent.

If you are ever in Penzance this is the place to visit, lots of local history, beautifully presented, very informative and in a beautiful setting. End your visit in the excellent cafe which over looks beautiful gardens.

Wonderful world class paintings and watercolours by Walter Langley, an absolute must when visiting Penzance. The two rude men manning the admissions at the front desk need a more helpful and welcoming manner which they totally lack.

Went to see the Walter Langley exhibition. First visit and what a gem, small but interesting and beautifully planned. Had a delicious toasted sandwich in the cafe. Look forward to visiting again.

Great place of Art, culture, fresh sea air and adventure, with a super shopping centre thrown in. You have nearby Marizion and St Michaels Mount, and the ART worlds Newlyn just 1 mile away, as well as Mousehole fishing village just 3 miles to the south. PLEASE VISIT!!!!!!!!
