This is a quaint little fishing village which you have to pay to enter. It's £25 for a family of four. The path down is very steep and cobbled but is very beautiful. If you would struggle to get back up I believe they have a land rover for a fee. There's a fisherman's cottage you can enter and walk around which is brilliant and a tiny museum with a couple of rooms. Unfortunately the tide was out when we were there as the kids wanted to go crabbing but we found plenty in the little pools on the beach. Over to the right is a beautiful waterfall you can walk to.
I'm glad we went and saw it, you just don't see cobbled streets like that very often anymore. We also went in September and quite soon after opening so it was very quiet and pleasant but I can imagine it gets rammed in the summer and with such narrow streets might not be quiet as enjoyable.

I decided to wait in cafe while my wife quickly visited clovelly only to find cold areas to sit alone with a Luke warm cup of coffee so please please do not visit stay at home while you're partner enjoys alone

My wife and I went actually in 2010, but I couldn't select that date because it wasn't available to do so.
We had a wonderful time,
We visited the house museum, which I recommend. Sat around the harbour area and had lunch.
Worthwhile to visit.

An amazing place, bit like going back in time. Very picturesque, even in the rain. Very friendly locals and staff, especially in the Red Lion Hotel. It is quite steep and it is uneven cobbled street but you can get a Landrover up and down on the service road at a very fair price, but you will be missing out on so much. If you are elderly or disabled we suggest walking down if possible and the have something to eat or drink at the Red Lion, and then get the Landrover up.

What a lovely place to visit whilst in the area, we started off watching the 30 min show in the visitor centre which also gave us some things to look for whilst walking round and some prior knowledge of what they meant. We had a very reasonably priced lunch at the New Inn Hotel and then continued our walk down the very steep cobbled hill. We explored all the little side alleyways being careful to watch for private signs and not trespass. We visited Kingsleys house and the fishermans cottage at the rear as well as the church. We also made a game out of spotting houses renovated by Christine Hamlyn (if you watch the show you'll know what that means).
At the bottom we wandered along to where the waterfall was which is very accessible during low tide but a bit more of a challenge at high tide, wandered around the harbour wall before making our way up the steep climb back to the top, stopping for a well deserved ice cream at the Old Post Office halfway.
Of course we could have taken the Landrover up to the top which offers at a small fee a ride back to the visitor centre.
Beautiful little craft shops just before getting back to the visitor centre, soaps, silks and pottery and to say hello to the donkeys.
What made it even better value was that if you return within 7 days its free entry if you show your receipt.

A really pretty village but a little disappointing for the price.
Beautiful views - but not sure they’re any more beautiful than other villages that are free to walk around.
A tea room where we had cream teas and sandwiches. I had a queens cream tea which was around £16 and consisted of a prawn sandwich (prawns on 2 pieces of brown buttered bread) on a side plate and a scone with jam and cream and a coffee. The tea room was full of flies and wasps (so was the pub at the harbour which is why we walked back up the hill to the tea room). Friendly staff but I felt very expensive compared to others places.
A small chapel and museum which was nice to walk around and a nice fudge shop which wasn’t too overpriced.
The children really enjoyed hunting for shells and crabs on the beach - we probably spent most of our time doing that.
We were really disappointed that the only donkeys we saw were in the stables - the leaflet had said there would be donkey rides but there was not.
Film is worth a watch.
It’s a nice way to spend half a day but did feel a bit overpriced for what it actually is.
I wouldn’t like to visit on a wet day as the cobbles must be treacherous!

What an amazing place..£15.50 adult and £5.50 child, we took a picnic..definitely need sensible flat shoes as very cobbled and steep in places, can take a great fun land-rover trip back up at about £2 each...this is cash only, the gardens are amazing to look around and it's a really unique place, with pretty cottages..little museums and craft shops..prob not wheelchair friendly or pram friendly unless you have muscles like He-Man, enjoyed by my whole family from young to older...

I last visited this village as a 10 year old 1968 and was so looking forward to it. What a shame to find the whole village has been turned into a tourist attraction that charges you £9.50 to enter. They've built a visitor centre where the 'free' carpark is. So unless you're a local, it would be difficult to avoid getting onto the village any other way.
Then there's the village itself, you have to negotiate a very uncomfortable, steep and uneven path all the way down the gradient must have been 1:2. Im not old but spent the whole way looking down at my feet.
The eating places were nice but small and consequently crammed, the prices were extortionate chsrging £11.50 for a cheese sandwich!
We learned from a local that life in Clovelly is hard and expensive as their rents have been increasing year on year. Many long term neighbours have given up and left. it's owned by a single landlord, a Mr John Rous who it seems, has turned it i to a sort of living museum with real down trodden people as exhibits.
The 'beach' was very hard to negotiate on foot to get to a rather small and unimpressive waterfall that is part of the experience.
To finish it off the way it began, our party of 5 adults and 4 children shelved out £20 to get back up to the visitor centre in a battered old jeep that had seen better days.

Pretty little village, but not as pretty as I’ve seen elsewhere.
I think what it lacked was flowers. It had lots of dead or empty hanging baskets, and some of the houses looked tired. Probably because the owner wants to move out the residents and make it an AirBnB which would just ruin the place.
We never got to eat lunch there as it was was too busy, so headed out after a few hours.
There is a Landrover Defender for the less able, this is located by the harbour pub and takes you to the donkey stables from what I saw. So you need to be fairly abled to get in the back and for the walk up the hill from the donkeys to the visitor centre. The price was £3.50 per person. It looked pretty crammed like sardines in the back too!
It’s worth a visit for sure, but wear comfy shoes. Not flip flops. I also saw people carrying buggies and prams. Honestly, I wouldn’t even consider taking one down. They were regretting it!

A lovely quaint little village frozen in time. A great place to visit to see what it was like to live in a bygone era. Lots of little things to discover make it a great day out.

Hi Bob & Yvonne, as mentioned both in the beer garden and also in the garden of my house, I asked you not to post this sensitive information, everyone is entitled to a level of privacy, even when they are a well know face/name. I've requested that this review be taken down via Trip Advisor, but I'm also hoping whilst they look into it you could also take out the sensitive information or at least amend the review so no names are mentioned. I would greatly appreciate that as would my friend who values his privacy above all else. Thank you - Rachel.

There used to be a Land Rover that would drive you back to the top. Is such a service still available ?
เขียนเมื่อ 26 กรกฎาคม 2021
We were there a month ago and the land rover wasn't running then.
เขียนเมื่อ 30 กรกฎาคม 2021
It would depend on your level of mobility
It is ok going down! But very challenging coming back up! You could check if the land rovers are running to drive you back. They used to do this. Not sure with COVID?
Great place to visit tho - pick a nice sunny day tho

We only have a half-day to visit Clovelly? Will it be long enough to see it all? How long does the walk down takes? Thanks.
เขียนเมื่อ 9 มกราคม 2020
It only takes about 1 hour to walk down, so yes you should have enough time, walking back up could take twice as long

Why did you pay to gain entrance to the village when it's a public right of way down the main street?
เขียนเมื่อ 1 ธันวาคม 2019
It used to all be maintained by the clovelly estate company, but several years ago when repairing the cobbles became excessive, they handed to Devon county council to look after it !!! It is as the previous person wrote....a public right of way...the estate company say the charge is for entering Kingsley house, and parking. If you walk along the coast path and arrive at clovelly they cannot charge you to enter the village, so don’t go in the visitors centre....I do know as I used to be the postman for higher clovelly for years

Hi, can I park overnight, as walking from there and won't be returning for 2 days.
เขียนเมื่อ 23 ตุลาคม 2019
There are plenty of parking spaces and no charge for the actual parking and no-one checked us in or out of that area so i'm sure it would be fine. There was a employee directing the cars to the parking area so maybe let them know your plans once you are parked up
