A really interesting and well presented exhibits, run by English Heritage.
We spent a couple of hours there but could have been much longer.
Well worth a visit for adults and children.

Over priced mini attraction. The café and staff are lovely, some nice views from close area. Had much more fun crossing the water on the Dartmouth ferry in my car. £11 per person is way over the top.

We had a very enjoyable experience despite the weather. It rained the whole time but it is gas lovely views, good information points and my 8 year old enjoyed learning the history of how it was used to protect the waters.

Although it's listed as a ruin, there was quite a lot to walk around and see. You can climb up to the towers and climb down into the cellars. Don't miss the free gin tastings in the gift shop of locally made strawberry gin! Views from the towers across the river and down to the town were spectacular.

Can get a car or walk to the castle from Dartmouth. We used a local ferry boat which took us down the Dart river to get to the castle. Well laid out with lots of information. Toilets next to site. There was a Cafe but closed on the day we went. Does not take long to walk around but good view up and down the river.

Volunteer Stephen greeted us at the ticket shop warmly and answered our Castle questions with knowledge and humour.
There is quite a lot to explore and see - more than we had expected. It has all the appearance of a castle but it's unique story reveals the Dartmouth peoples' independent spirit!
Allow at least 60 - 90 minutes to fully explore and experience the exhibits, including the church.
The walk to and from Dartmouth Centre is worth it for the river views and to see more of the variety of housing architecture this lovely town has.

Parking at the castle o on approach is interesting and it is typical of the roads that they are narrow, twisty and with few passing places. We parked on the road a little away and walked.
Once there the staff were friendly and helpful and it was an interesting explore of what is effectively a gun battery. The use of the chain across the river, and particularly how it was deployed, could have been better explained - perhaps they are not really sure?

The title castle is somewhat of a misnomer as this is really a costal fort that served for many years as the first line of defence for the Tidal town of Dartmouth. It is an interesting place to visit and offers splendid views of the estuary and town for a high vantage point.
There are some interesting displays and lots of information about the history but children will soon become bored given its size. The visit would receive five stars but given its size and facilities I believe the entrance price is somewhat high and it therefore doesn't offer good value for money. This aside, it is recommended.

Lots of levels and places to explore. Plenty of information. Staff very helpful. In 'the olden days' you would have used up 2-3 rolls of kodak film taking pictures of the views - absolutely fabulous. Limited parking, tea rooms, public loos all adjacent castle. Suggest combine visit with walk down to Sugery Cove right next door. On balance preferred the Castle area to Dartmouth town centre.

A very interesting visit with just the right amount of added information. We arrived by road, rather than by ferry and timed it just right for parking, as were able to park right outside. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and the views from the castle are great. Also it is dog friendly which is a bonus, thought there are one or two bits that are difficult access wise. All in all an enjoyable morning out and a good first use of our newly acquired English Heritage membership.

Not unfriendly but quite a few stairs, would probably be best to stay to lower part if you have English heritage membership worth a visit if you have to pay to walk dog on lower part perhaps best to just walk around Dartmouth
