This fort is part of the early defences of the town and it easily found at the end of the high street. It is worth a visit, has a board to interpret what you are seeing and best of all, it is free!

This is best seen from the river.
As already said, there isn't a lot to see, but it played an important part in Dartmouth history and provided a second line of defence to protect the harbour, after Dartmouth and Kingswear Castles and the chain between them.
It is a pleasant short walk from the town centre. Entry is either off Bayard's Cove Road or down steep stone steps from Southtown.
The thick stone walls have eleven gun holes all carefully angled to give complete coverage of the river. Around the top was a parapetted walkway used by soldiers armed with longbows and handguns.
It was never tested in naval assault although it was used as a temporary machine gun post in WW2.
It may not justify a visit in its own right but makes an interesting break if walking to Dartmouth Castle.

Lovely walk along the estuary path to this example of medieval defences, with interesting information. Many small interesting shops along the way. Dartmouth is a lovely place to visit with many lovely old buildings to see. Whilst walking back to the car park, we visited St. Saviours Church, a lovely old church, well worth a visit,

walked down to hear from the cliff path it has some stunning scenery around it and the view from the fort over the cove and across the estuary are great

Not much to see but it's in good condition and interesting info. Only a 5 min thing to visit tho. Nice to look at on the way to the castle.
The river leading to it and Dartmouth itself are well worth a visit. In Dartmouth there are some lovely old buildings and some good shops and very nice bakeries.
There are boat trips, a paddle steamer you can go on and a river ferry across to Kingswear. There is also a boat you can catch to the castle if you don't want to walk.
The river is very popular for crabbing. The quayside gets really full with people crabbing. We went and brought a crab net etc from the shops and had a go, really good fun and easy to catch loads of crabs (bacon is a winner).
Dartmouth is well worth a visit.

This is well worth a visit if you are in Dartmouth it is a well preserved example of medieval defences and you can get some amazing photos through the various arches, it is close to where the Pilgrim Fathers sailed from.

Nothing much more than an empty circular stone fort, adjacent to the Historic quay where the Dartmouth Pilgrims first departed from. The Fort was just one part of the defences for the (medieval ) then important port of Dartmouth.

Easy to get to and provides a free experience of early Dartmouth defences. Nothing really to attract your attention.

Certainly worth a stroll through as you wander southwards along the riverfront, but that stroll through will take around 15 seconds, or a tad longer if you stop to read the minimal information board. Climb back up the steps to the top road for some great views across the river to Kingswear.

Not really very much to see at the Fort but a nice walk through on way to Dartmouth Castle. Can't really say any more than that.
