Jerry was our guide and a wealth of knowledge. You will know the history of Plymouth as well as the history of the Jewish people that lived there over the centuries. The synagogue is a gem. Great experience!

Jerry Sibley, an excellent teacher and guide who gave us a personal tour of the Synagogue as well as giving us fascinating insights of the broader history of Plymouth which was a highlight of our trip there. Jerry has looked after the Synagogue for almost 20 years and brought the tour alive with his enthusiasm, passion and detailed knowledge about the Synagogue and history of Plymouth - Jerry is a national treasure and could not have been more accommodating!

Plymouth Synagogue is a wonderful orthodox Shul with a wealth of history whilst keeping all the elements of religious prayer and traditions.
The tour was conducted by Jerry who not only explains the history of the synagogue but also the people past and present and the surrounding area too.
Jerry is a wonderful asset to Plymouth Synagogue.
A must visit if in Cornwall or Devon.

Well the was a great tour what an absolute gem this tour was and Jerry the tour guide was fantastic so much detail, if your a tourist our like us locals you are in for a treat when you take this tour the history of both Plymouth and the Jewish community intertwined.

We were given a very lively and informative talk on the history of Plymouth and its Jewish population and subsequent growth and later slow demise of the synagogue which is the oldest Ashkenazi synagogue in the English speaking world dating back to the 1700's.
Jerry proved to be an expert guide and the synagogue is well worth a visit.

Wonderful couple of hours learning about the history of Plymouth Synagogue, Plymouth itself and the Jewish community. Jerry is an amazing guide, story teller and all round great guy. Really knowledgable and committed to preserving the synagogue. Jerry is a real gem and the Synagogue is well worth visit. If you are in South West England go out of your way to visit!

Synagogan är fortfarande aktiv.
Fantastiskt mottagande och stort historiskt kunnande hos Jerry Sibley som tar emot efter ök. Men det är alltid öppet på vardagar och söndagar.
Efter många års kontakt med Jerry Sibley som tar hand om synagogan har jag äntligen hälsat på!
All historiskt kunnande och den erfarenhet som han samlat på sig är otrolig. Fick en 4 timmars genomgång om församlingen och synagogans historia såväl som om Plymouth. Stort tack Jerry!

We messaged on the offchance we'd be able to pop in and see the synagogue during our short visit to Plymouth. We were met by Jerry who gave us the most incredible and fascinating tour / talk of the synagogue and local area.
We had our two kids with us (aged 8 and 10) and he made everything accessible for them, so much so they remained pretty much engaged the entire way through the tour / talk which - if you have kids - you'll know is no small achievement.
We had no idea of the history of this little site and I would urge any group organisers, families, visitors to Plymouth to see if you can get an appointment. We were blown away and I learnt so much. All delivered on a 'donation only' basis. Thank you Jerry!

Teignmouth u3a (those no longer constrained by full time work) Theology group booked this tour as we have previously learned about the shared beliefs of Jews/Christians/Muslims and wanted to understand more about Judaeism. . Jerry taught us so much on how the history of Plymouth is linked with the Jewish/Catholic/Anglican/Non Conforming faiths and we all learned so much, which we will discuss in the weeks snd months to come. We had a very warm welcome and his knowledge and passion shone throughout the afternoon. The 3 hours flew by and some of us will return to join a Saturday morning worship service. Thank you for the memorable photo, Jerry.

My husband and I are visiting family in Exmouth and would like to day trip to Plymouth. This tour has great reviews and we are very interested. We are from the US and are Jewish. Our available dates are 17 or 18 October. Any chance we could do this tour? We are taking the train from Exmouth to Plymouth. Thanks

If you go onto the Shul's website by googling it. you will find Jerry's email address or mobile. He will answer you more or less straight away via email and make arrangements to give you a tour. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did, we are Jewish and learnt a lot.

Visiting the Synagogue for a tour is arranged by appointment with Jerry.

Is the congregation dwindling because of age and migration as suggested by a recent reviewer or is it because of intermarriage with non observant Jews and Gentiles and a general lack of commitment to attending synagogue, just as with Christians and church?

Dwindling congregation and the reasons for it doesn't really have a bearing on visiting the Synagogue. The Synagogue is open for visitors and worshippers alike, If you would like to visit and know more about the building, it's history and it's people? Then booking a tour is the best option.

We do have wheel chair ramps, they are portable ones so it is advisable to call me prior to your visit so I can ensure they are in place for when you arrive.

I read elsewhere that there is a Jewish burial ground alongside the Ford Park cemetery but that there is also a very old Jewish burial ground in the oldest part of the city somewhere between the Barbican and the Hoe. Does the synagogue have any responsibility for that and are there any visits? Or a website with details?

The new cemetery (1850's - present) is located at the end of Gifford Place I do regular talks and tours there during the Plymouth History Festival every May The Old cemetery on the Hoe (1740's - 1860's) is located on Lambhay Hill (between New Street, Castle Dyke Lane and Lambhay Hill behind Garrison Green) you can find a burial list and more on the susser archives website.
I do do the occasional visit for relatives, but intend to include The Hoe Cemetery in the History Festival tours Next May.
