Don’t be put off by thinking this tour is going to be boring and all about Judaism.
Jerry is one of the most interesting guides you will encounter, his knowledge about old Plymouth and about the Jews make it so fascinating 2+ hours fly by.
I went once with another group and was so enthralled I booked for my own group to do a tour, they didn’t know what to expect except they took my word it would be very interesting and they couldn’t stop talking about it. With audience participation adding to a very informative afternoon this a 5* experience down to Jerry.

What a great afternoon Torpoint and Rame Peninsula U3A had being shown around the synagogue by Jerry. I thought we were going to see the synagogue building, but Jerry is a mine of information on the history of Plymouth city. A great plane to visit!

Oustanding visit.
Jerry is an oustanding guide: a very knowledgeable, reliable, enthusiastic person and a remarkable guide -- this visit of the synagogue was definitely one of my best moments in Devon (and in England) ever.
Thanks to Jerry, you'll learn a lot -- even if you're Jewish or know your Judaism, you will learn about the history of Plymouth and about the history of the Jewish community. Actually Jerry has several great maps to illustrate what he is telling you.
If you don't know much about Judaism, you'll have the chance to learn about it too.
What Jerry is doing is of paramount importance for the synagogue, which is a beautiful building with a rich history.
Of course, I strongly recommend that people include a visit of the synagogue during their stay in Plymouth!

The highlight of our trip to Plymouth was this fascinating tour by Jerry, one of the most knowledgeable, enthusiastic tour guides we've ever encountered. How does one man know so much?? As all the other reviewers have said, we learned so much about the Jewish history of Plymouth and also the general history of the region. We highly recommend this tour.

Jerry gave us a wonderful tour of this beautiful, historic synagogue. He explained, in depth and with charm and humor, the history of the synagogue and how it fits into the history of Plymouth. And he was very helpful with arrangements for the tour. A real pleasure to communicate with. Come visit and enjoy!

Wow. This was absolutely amazing. Felt honoured and humbled to attend the service and visit this historic synagogue.
Jerry was amazing in telling us about the history of the synagogue and the community.

Was not expecting such a detailed history of the Plymouth and in particular about the Jewish Community
Jerry is an amazing guide - he has done a tremendous amount of research
He presented everything clearly and coherently
Would highly recommend a visit
make sure you have plenty of time - we only had 2 hours could have stayed longer

I contacted Jerry yesterday morning and he cleared his schedule to meet with us at 1030 same day. Don’t do this to him, but it’s wonderful he was open to accommodating us. He gave us a tour not just of the synagogue but of Plymouth, its history, and how Jews have been a fabric of its history, all without leaving the property. He spent a few hours with us and it was fascinating from start to finish. We would recommend everyone see this jewel in Plymouth!

Beautiful and unique synagogue with a fascinating history. In fact we learnt the history of Plymouth through the synagogue's history which was provided by Jerry, the custodian. He was superb, extremely knowledgable and enjoyable company.

My husband and I are visiting family in Exmouth and would like to day trip to Plymouth. This tour has great reviews and we are very interested. We are from the US and are Jewish. Our available dates are 17 or 18 October. Any chance we could do this tour? We are taking the train from Exmouth to Plymouth. Thanks

If you go onto the Shul's website by googling it. you will find Jerry's email address or mobile. He will answer you more or less straight away via email and make arrangements to give you a tour. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did, we are Jewish and learnt a lot.

Visiting the Synagogue for a tour is arranged by appointment with Jerry.
This can be done by;
Phone, Text or Email (via the web site) which you will find at the top right of the trip advisor page or

Is the congregation dwindling because of age and migration as suggested by a recent reviewer or is it because of intermarriage with non observant Jews and Gentiles and a general lack of commitment to attending synagogue, just as with Christians and church?

Dwindling congregation and the reasons for it doesn't really have a bearing on visiting the Synagogue. The Synagogue is open for visitors and worshippers alike, If you would like to visit and know more about the building, it's history and it's people? Then booking a tour is the best option.

Yes,
We do have wheel chair ramps, they are portable ones so it is advisable to call me prior to your visit so I can ensure they are in place for when you arrive.

I read elsewhere that there is a Jewish burial ground alongside the Ford Park cemetery but that there is also a very old Jewish burial ground in the oldest part of the city somewhere between the Barbican and the Hoe. Does the synagogue have any responsibility for that and are there any visits? Or a website with details?

The new cemetery (1850's - present) is located at the end of Gifford Place I do regular talks and tours there during the Plymouth History Festival every May The Old cemetery on the Hoe (1740's - 1860's) is located on Lambhay Hill (between New Street, Castle Dyke Lane and Lambhay Hill behind Garrison Green) you can find a burial list and more on the susser archives website.
I do do the occasional visit for relatives, but intend to include The Hoe Cemetery in the History Festival tours Next May.
