Fresher and Professor has been looking forlorn and past it’s time for quite a while. No surprise then that it has been taken over by a new manager who has advertised a rather fiddly concept based loosely on schoolrooms with names, vouchers with booze purchases and a periodic award of crates or boxes of alcopops equal to the winners height. Seems odd to launch just as exams finish and the kids flee for the hills but even if the place holds out until the autumn the formula sounds woefully fiddly and uninspiring. Why would anyone want to go to that kind of set up more than once out of curiosity?

Excellent place to go for a Thursday evening. Been plenty of times and has never disappointed. Always bouncing around midnight. Very cheap drinks. 100% reccomend to go with mates.

Called in on the poor strength of the recent review which referred to the pole but it was all a bit staid. Small clusters of students none of whom showed any sparkle or fun during the hour we were here. Not at the cheaper end of Plymouth beer prices either!

Popped in with some friends on a friday evening. Very cheap drinks, lots of space and a pole (which various male members of our group had a go of dancing around/on!). The music wasn't too loud and we were able to have proper conversations!

Almost only students. Very much what you'd expect in the dense heart of student accommodation. Average prices. Didn't strike me as having any extra special buzz or usp.

Cheapish student bar. Formerly the Grand Duchess and for some time rather artificially named the Fresher and Professor (same logic probably) as with the 'Skiving Scholar' just along the road. The pub is on the former of Gibbon Lane and Gibbon Street about 70m off North Hill and in the shadows of high density recent student housing. The outside has been toned down from some fairly creative signage and accessories but the place still has some life and is not a bad place to drink if you can tolerate the student social dynamic. If it all gets too much the eccentric and very different Nowhere Inn is just around the corner.
