took our grandson on a steam railway trip on the Swanage railway, very good. Service was very good and all staff were friendly.

A very average place where you get to stare at trains but kids should love it. You will have short train ride for a hefty fee.

Lovely steam railway. Parked at the main beach car park in Swanage which is £1 all day in February and only a short walk to the station. Main object was to visit Corfe Castle en route.

Yes, you can actually drive a steam train at Swanage Railway!!
This may not be the cheapest experience you will ever get the pleasure of doing but its worth every penny, plus when you consider the costs involved for the Railway it makes it more justified.
We were welcomed on the platform and shown round the engine and coaches, then up onto the footplate to meet our driver and the fireman (who's names i cant remember but they were amazing!), after a bit of safety stuff we were shown the controls and off we went whilst being talked through the process.
Upon returning to the station at Swanage, grinning from ear to ear we were given a nice big goodie bag to remember the experience by.
Rail enthusiast or not I'd say if you get the chance to do this then do it!!!

We visited for the illuminated Christmas train, and sat in the Pullman observation car. Brilliant value, lovely canapés, lots of champagne, great friendly staff. An evening to remember and which we hope to repeat.

We went on a rather expensive Steam and lights trip from Swanage railway as a pleasant way to end a birthday weekend away. The train left at 19.15. Our carriage was full of families with very young children, most of whom were in their pjs as it was past their bedtime! Their parents were drinking alcohol from the moment they got on the train to the moment they got off. The noise from the children running up and down the carriage and parents shouting to be heard over them made they journey unbearable.
The lights were far from great especially from the left hand side of the train. All thats needed is someone to ride the journey compare the two sides and think creatively for next season.
All of this could be easily rectified by having a quiet carriage or banning alcohol on the train. Whilst the railway are not responsible for passenger behaviour surelythey should have a regard for it to ensure that all passengers can enjoy themselves.
I have contacted Swanage railway privately but their reply left a lot to be desired.

Quite a disappointing experience. The station and train looked garish rather than tastefully decorated and festive. Corfe Castle, which is clearly lit up in the advert, was pitch black. The ‘treat box’ comprised of a random selection of junk food with a focus on quantity rather than quality and extremely overpriced.

Great trip in the Pullman carriage last night! Train lit from end to end and then some!
Wonderful attention from the authentically dressed Staff, with champers and canapés whilst passing brightly lit scenes and Corfe Castle station looking fabulous!
At the end if the trip we had time to check out the engine… we learnt so much! Can’t recommend it highly enough!!

Is it possible to park and take a train from Norden station on a Sunday to Swanage to ride on the Dorsetman train for lunch?

We have a lunch booked on the Dorsetman leaving swanage at 12.35 and returning at 15.22. Is it possible to park at Noden Station and get a train?
Does the car park at Norden Station for the seam train accept card payments or just coins?

There is a massive car park at the station.. we didn't use it so not sure the answer but worth phoning tourist information in swanage to ask... they are very helpful

I've bought tickets and notice they are for a set date rather than a timed train. On weekends in the summer holidays can you generally get on your choice of train or do they get often get full up and you have to wait for the next one?

We did get an earlier train back. The weather was awful and the train wasn't full . It was also the first day after look down.
Not sure how things will be in the summer holidays?
It's a great day out !

Hi there, I’d like to take my little dog on the steam train and sea cruise adventure. Is that ok and do I need to pay as at booking, it only asks for adults and children?

The answers so far have been correct however on a few special occasions there are trains that are scheduled not to stop, so you do have to check with the guard before boarding the train that it is going to stop.

As others have said yes. If the train has a buffet car then I think dogs are not permitted in that particular coach.

We will be travelling with a 93 year old who uses a mobility scooter. Can this be taken on the train?

Mobility scooters can go on the train in the guards van providing they are not too large or heavy. Most can but there are some we cant carry as they exceed the 230kg weight limit. If the person can walk a short distance they can leave the scooter in the guards van and walk to a seat in a carriage.
