When we visited the Chained library was not available, being closed for refurbishment. There is plenty of interpretation and explanation in the associated exhibitions

At £6 it's a bit more than you might think it's worth, but visiting the cathedral is free (make a donation! keep it open to people!) so I understand why they charge for this. The information and signage is excellent and if you like seeing history for real, it's a must.

Amazing to see the Mappa Mundi, beautifully presented and clear explanations. Very helpful guide told us lots about the library.

You cannot visit Hereford without taking this into your 'need to do list'
Even as a local I was so impressed by this 'asset' we held.
My nieces visited from Canada and of course I wanted to show what we 'had'. I was as awe struck as they were ! Please do visit

If you like history, you must go to see this map. 700 years old, unbelievable. and the guides were so interesting to talk to.

Decided to visit here having looked round the cathedral; the guide volunteers were very helpful.

Our main reason for visiting Hereford was to go to the Cathedral and view the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library and we were not disappointed
The Cathedral was a welcome respite from the fierce hot of the mid-day sun and allowed us to cool down a little
We wandered around the magnificent building marvelling at the amazing features prior going to the Mappa Mundi exhibit
The section of the Cathedral where the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library is housed is well signposted, there is a small charge to visit this area but it is well worth it
We had only ever seen the Mappa Mundi in books etc. so was surprised by its size and condition
The exhibit was very informative and also the guides were most helpful

Very informative and interesting. Could have missed the Magna Carta which was tucked away a little.Mappa Mundi was really fascinating. A very different world view.

Enjoyed this experience very much. The exhibitions about the library and Mappa Mundi were well laid out though some spaces were cramped. The volunteer in the library was very helpful and answered all our questions.

I’d say 3/4 hour. But worth doing the Mappa Mundi and chain library. There are concessions for children & families. About the same time the main cathedral.
There is an outside and inside Cafe for a relaxing break.

For the Mappa Mundi and Chained Library exhibitions we spent about an hour. There was an excellent guide in the Chained Library. The Mappa Mundi you look at! It's complicated but there are plenty of boards around explaining it.
